First of 2 ($60@) from a recent auction lot. Shortish TN here, following my recent love letter to the ‘14 (96) about 6 weeks ago. Similar notes here, with diverse red fruit (strawberries, cherries, rhubarb and pomegranates), dried wildflowers, mixed ground spice, dry earth, and saline. Light to medium garnet, medium acidity, medium bodied, no heat. VG complexity, persistence and intensity. This presents generally similarly to the ‘14 but without as much lift or expressiveness. Drank well off the pour and held solidly and consistently over 3 nights, with more integration of the acidity (which wasn’t all that noticeable to begin with). Particularly good with seared salmon, and probably a bit better with food than on its own. This was the first vintage of this bottling, and I’m not sure to what extent that, the additional year since the vintage or something else accounts for the somewhat dialed down performance, or if it’s just the greater than normal variability of Rhys I’ve written elsewhere, including in my TN for the ‘14. Regardless, drinking my second bottle of this will be far more of a priority than finishing off the ‘14 (CT window of 2034 seems very optimistic). VG showing here, even if far short of the transcendence of the latter vintage.

Tasted over 2 hrs -nearly semi-translucent med red mild clearing -expressive dusty rhubarb stems faint sweet sous bois -med acidity, med weight though paradoxically the complex earthy stemmy faded red fruit cola elements are diffusely spread through the mid-palate rather than focused and concentrated, still a bit of spicy oak and delicate med- tannins -fully mature but not tired, typical Rhys soaring aromatics and complexity

Cherry earthy cherry nose. Really lovely mid weight cherry, baking spices, and dark fruited palate with a long tart peppery tingly finish. Excellent balance. So much better than my last bottle. Charming, intense but in no way heavy. Bring on the chicken tacos.

Lots of lovely cherry fruit. Cherry cola, good length. Ready to drink but no rush in my opinion. Wish I had more.

More than a bit over the hill, yet drinkable. Faded fruits, lite spice, & good brightness. Fruit core nearly gone.
