Double Diamond was first created by Schrader Cellars in 2001 to showcase Cabernet in the region. Thomas Rivers Brown is/was the consulting winemaker, and Schrader/Double Diamond was one of his first ventures into making Cabernet before his career rose and he started getting 100 points for his Cabernet and working for numerous wineries. This is technically from Sonoma but nowadays their Double Diamond only comes from Napa. Their 2019 Oakville was the 2022 Wine Spectator wine of the year.
Still some tannins and primary fruit rather than a lot of tertiary secondary and tertiary notes but super smooth. Plummy fruit. Cassis. Medium-low acid. Seems to be fading over time though.

Professor Gopen graciously opened this at poker night, audozed with the cork in probably about an hour before we started drinking (and playing cards). Nice mixture of primary, secondary, and tertiary bouquet- aged wild blackberry liqueur, Kir, (dryish) blueberry mead, stewed plums, hints of ground tea leaves, some crushed rocks, black pepper, and cedar all intermingled. Thick, unctuous, and "hairy" with all the body coming from the 14.5% abv. More acidity than I was honestly expecting but the rustic edge is coming from the tannic structure at this point. Solid Sonoma Cab that hasn't aged into "wine liqueur", feeling an A- (91) evaluation is totally appropriate at this stage.

I have not been that impressed with some of the Double Diamonds I have had previously, but this bottle was one of the better ones I've tasted. Medium to full bodied with a nice color still holding up very well. Notes of dark cherry, and some sweet oak give it a nicely rounded mouthfeel and weight. But I can't help but think the fruit selection is just a little thin, given there is a slight stale tea element to the finish. I have to say, the bottle held up very well even after an hour decant, so it seems to me that the aging trajectory for this is positive, likely meriting a higher score in 5-10 years.
