Marvin (WineBurrowingWombat) Visits Minnesota; 10/16/2023-10/23/2023 (Jason's House): I love this wine! Pulled this bottle because my niece joined Marvin (WBW) and I to prepare for the wine dinner scheduled the next day. My niece and I fell in love with this wine at a James Suckling tasting in Miami a few years earlier. Definitely one of the best, if not the best, Malbecs I have tasted! A Paul Hobbs wine, masterfully done!
TN: Nose showed dark fruit, bramble, earth and mocha notes, with hints of spice and cedar. Palate was great with dark fruit and some dark cherry with notes of cocoa, tobacco and some leather. The wine also showed hints of mushroom and toasted oak. The tannins were fine and smooth, and provided a nice mouthfeel, which I love in a wine. Easy 94+ and a very good bottle! I don't think I will ever tire of these!

Cracking the whip; 10/16/2023-10/23/2023 (Eagan, MN): N: Imagine if the aromas of coffee in the morning had a steroid injection of really dark red fruits, almost black. A bit of scorched earth without any heavily burnt or tar notes, like a hint of an old, lit cigar. There is this halved cocoa bean note (with husk and all) that gives it a nice bittersweet complexity.
P: Aged black and dark red plums but still has a strong freshness, a subtle touch of raisin, a sprinkling of graphite with crushed minerals. The minerals here are bright but with a bold outline (like the font style). Saturated earth by the same plum juices. Gentle leather on the finish with a drying sensation of earth.
A big and bold malbec with a bit of almost stewed fruits. Additional time in the cellar should improve this.

Guys Night - Something Special! (Jason's House): OK...so I host a bi-monthly dinner (every other month), and this dinner was special because three of my nieces and my sister-in-law all came over to help prepare and serve the meal. Of course, that called for some pre-dinner wine to be opened! We opened three bottles that afternoon to get (and keep) everyone in the mood for the evening festivities! The wines were: 2016 Carter Grand Daddy; 2011 Vina Cobos; and a 2019 Andremily EABA. For me, all three wines were fantastic!
2011 Vina Cobos - A great wine, and thankfully another very good bottle! This bottle was better than the last one, but not as good as the first couple. Nose and palate show lots of black and purple fruit with some dark cherry in the mix. Add some earthy notes, graphite and spice, along with silky tannins, and you have a pretty darn tasty wine! For me, one of the best Malbecs made! Solid 94 for this bottle!

Guys night out - ABBC (Anything But Bordeaux or Cabernet): I'D RATHER BE DRINKING WINE's bottle, and I agree with everything he said, except I would not wager that this wine will last 10-20 years. There is definitely lots of structure, but as already stated, damn it's big. The next day, this even bigger, darker, earthier, and scary. I'm not sure about the malbec grape, even in the best hands.

Anything Goes but Cab and Bordeaux! (Joe's Bistro): One hour decant and back in the bottle, served with dinner 3 hours later. Opened this up because my last bottle was off (heat damage) and I wanted to make sure it was an off bottle.....good news, it was! Lots of dark fruit and chocolate notes with some leather and spice notes. Too big for some, but drinking quite well for me! I think this has another 10-20 years still in the gas tank before it starts to fade. 93+ with no reservation!
