  • Average vintage; above-average wine! One-hour decant through a screened and aerating funnel. No sediment; clear wine; deep purple in bowl with slight lightening to the rim. Did not look like a 10-year-old Napa Merlot. During decant, lovely raspberry aromas sprang forth and wafted across the table. After resting in the decanter, nose was raspberry coulis over a dark chocolate cake with some greenery on the back end. In the mouth: deep raspberry, lots of chocolate, some plum and a very long finish that was a spot on impression of blackberry brandy. The finish showed some alcohol but the drinker will not mind. This wine was nowhere finished and would have lasted quite awhile longer. Sad this was my only bottle.

  • This was Bob Foley’s last vintage at Hourglass I believe. This is at or very near peak. Starting to show some orange and browning a bit on the color but oh my are the aromas and flavors amazing. Showing both fruit and earthy qualities on the nose. Black cherry, molasses, dates, ground coffee. Cherry, dark fruit, tobacco, and cinnamon stick carry the palate. Everything is in harmony and balance right now. This will go down way too easily. Cheers!

  • Outstanding. Great mouthfeel and full bodied. Smooth as silk and great big red cherry. Served with grilled steak - perfectly matched.

Saved some to enjoy with milk chocolate.

  • Wine of the year for me so far. This narrowly beat out an 06 Heitz Trailside I had earlier this year. This was ready for business immediately upon opening and had the best nose that was full of fruit. Ruby red, medium/well integrated tannins. Cherry fruit, a bit of plum.

Bought a bottle on clearance for just $45 but it's a shame it was my only one. What a wonderful surprise from the challenging 2011 vintage.
