{screwcap, 13.9%} Dark ruby. Young nose of blackberries, liquorice, malt, coffee, and a touch of jam. Chewy palate; youthful and raw - it tastes of barely-fermented fruit and open-stave oak. Picks up an earthy tobacco note to the flavours too. The palate isn't especially woody; it has medium powdery tannins, slightly caramel-like oak, decent weight on the mid-palate, and a medium-length, slightly warm finish. On a hot Sydney evening, I'd say keep it cool, definitely under 20C lest the alcohol get out of control (although it's nice to see a d'arenberg red at less than 14.5% for once). 5 years in the cellar should help the cause.
