In a double blinded tasting of a dozen top end French and Californian “Rhône blends” from 1990 to 1998, the Geyserville came out on top. Despite the strong competition (eg., Beaucastel, Vieux Telegraphe) the Ridge rose to the top due to complexity, seamlessness, and shear drinkability. Yes, these were all quite different wines, but the age and “commonality of purpose” made for a delightful comparison.

Very happy to report positively on this venerable wine. Still alive from my perspective, but others suspected it was corked (or perhaps over the hill). Soft, ethereal and sweet, but lacks the power for greatness.

Was given a bunch of old Ridge and not sure how it was cellared over time. Probably too old for '15 but always a learning experience to open and judge old juice. Liked the softness and plum notes, but not much going on through the palate.

Shows signs of aging. Still drinkable.
Update 5/26 - it mellowed and lost the hint of Brett initially in nose. Tastes like a cab.
