A big, substantial wine that is nevertheless well-balanced. Deep, inky red, nearly to the point of blackness in the glass. The nose is rich, with eucalyptus, leather and cassis dominating, accented by an undercurrent of crème brulée and cedar chest. The palate is rich and highly structured. The currant aromas come through in the deep, dark fruity notes up front, accented with vanilla notes. Tannins are assertive, but with a long decantation (about 90 minutes, in my case), they soften up and balance out the wine's heftiness. Being relatively young for a wine of this nature, it can drink a little hot and rough around the edges, and you can sense the components of the 50/50 cab/petit verdot blend still competing with each other.
With a long decantation, this drinks very well now, but it's obvious this is a wine built for the long haul. If served now, be sure to give it a very thorough and long decantation. Otherwise, a lengthy cellaring is likely to be very rewarding.
