  • Luis goes to Kenwood II (The Kenwood): Pop and pour, drank a good-sized glass over 1.5 hours. ROCKNROLLERs note from 2019 still applies. Very very berry, oodles of fruit. The 2012 tasted alongside this was a bit more full and complete as wines go, but I'll score them the same.

  • Luis Tasting (The Kenwood): PnP - It's been 4 years since I last had this wine. I think it would have benefitted from a 1-2 hour decant. Nose was nice with perfumed dark fruit, purple flowers, some forest floor, tar, anise and hints of oak. Palate initially shows some alcohol (for that reason, I think this wine showed slightly better 4 years ago), rich fruit (mostly blackberry and blueberry) with hints of plum spice and bramble. This wine has smooth tannins and is all about the fruit, which still takes center stage. For those looking for terior or secondary flavors, I am not sure if they will ever emerge, but for those who enjoy more decadent, hedonistic wines, I would drink up....I fear alcohol may start to replace some of thee fruit. 93+ today.

  • An excellent bottle that has aged well. Started very dark and earthy and over the course of the evening developed more red fruited notes and softened considerably. It is a deep wine with nice body and many layers. There is still considerable fine tannins and acidity which keeps the finish lively. Lots of life left.

  • Third of 3 after 2 stellar bottles, the second of which was over 3 years ago. While that drank brilliantly and gave no hints of giving out, recent bottles of a ‘04 Peter Michael LP, ‘09 Merryvale Profile and ‘10 Beringer PR all gave varying senses that they were past their magic moments, and I’ve been warily eying all of my pre-13 vintages since. And oh yeah, that lore about the best time to drink your cult cabs is when the delivery truck is pulling out of your driveway. But not to worry here, as this was pretty indistinguishable from the prior 2. After needing about about an hour to blow off some booziness and get itself in order, this was seamless and supple yet powerful, tannins still present but silky and well-integrated, not much acidity, but there wasn’t in the first place (that is, when I had the first bottle of the lot about 3 and a half years ago). Was delicious with burgers and grilled veggies—what else would you eat on the 4th of July?—but at least as good as a cocktail wine. May have lost half a step of intensity on night #2 (from 95-96 to 94+), but still really great. If I had more, and I’m not eliminating that possibility should another such bottle cross my path at a similar price, I’d drink in the next couple-few years (I’m extending my window by 1 year), but don’t feel the need to pop tonight, although on the other hand, I can think of worse ideas, and feel free to invite me over. The ‘15 of this, fresh off said delivery truck, was arguably my first cult cab, and while my relationship with cult winemakers since has been fraught, TRB, with his work here, at Rivers Marie, Riverain and Materium, continues to bat pretty close to 1.000. Highly recommended.
