  • 2002 Domaine de L'Arlot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de l'Arlot

2002 Domaine de l'Arlot Clos de Arlot: Felt like this deserved posting a note about. This wine will really do it for Arlot fans and probably not do it for most other folks. Much more advanced than I would have guessed (I think this was bought on release from the local distributor but I really don't recall to be honest). So, lots of earthy funk, forest floor, soy sauce (big time) and sous bois. Still enough presence of that spiced raspberry and slight cocoa sort of thing that Arlot in general and this vineyard in particular seem to have to keep this wine from merely having older flavors exclusively. Come for the flavors but stay for the texture. Tannins have melted down giving this excellent rich, smooth and supple feel that in a younger wine would be too much with primary fruit but in this environment this velvet tone is an addition. All in all a delicious Arlot bottling. Again, more advanced than one would think from an '02 but putting that aside this was a very beautiful and highly enjoyable bottle for fans of the style.

Bam. This was spot on. The aromatics just kept coming and developing and growing as the wine opened over the course of a couple of hours. Likewise the texture that started out as gorgeous developed into a sublime combination of supremely rich and incredibly light. This still carries pristine red primary fruit but there is an underpinning of earth and a pick up of minerals in the finishing tannins. This is probably as good as it will be in this incarnation as a young wine but there could be a second act as an older one that is equally special if different. Right now this was glorious. Paired perfectly with Sudan Farm rack of lamb with a Morel mushroom sauce and green garlic pesto risotto. Just amazing to think what I purchased this wine for ten years ago. Sigh.

Clear the whole way through, very light in color but not especially faded. This was gorgeous. A real surprise at how extremely good this was. Beautiful aromatics that were just a full spectrum of how developed Burgundy smells. Hard to describe other than to simply say “perfumed” which is utterly lacking in how wonderfully this wine’s aromatics lifted from the surface up to one’s nose. A pleasure to smell. This was clearly at an apex to me. The fruit is fully mature with just enough primary sweetness to keep a sense of freshness to the earthy, herbal, spicy flavors. Texture was just at the point where there is still weight but in a completely airy sort of way. The only dint against this would be the tannins have a slight drying effect on this very elegant and discreet wine however this is picking at nits in the grand scheme of things.
