An imprimatur (from Latin, "let it be released") is, in essence, a declaration, an endorsement...
Epicurean Wines is proud to announce the inaugural release of Imprimata, a Shiraz-Petite Sirah blend from the Australian property of Benjamin Hammerschlag. An old skeleton blue gum tree that stands on the McLaren Vale property marks the source of this collaboration between renowned winemaker Ben Glaetzer and Epicurean's founder, Benjamin Hammerschlag. The partnership has resulted in only 500 coveted cases of intensely elegant, complex and focused single vineyard Shiraz and Petite Sirah.
Concurrent with his passion for seeking out Australia's best wines, Hammerschlag began his quest for the perfect piece of property for his own wine. His search ended at one of the highest points in McLaren Vale in the sub-district of Seaview, known for producing fruit with a track record for the highest quality. The Imprimata vineyard consists of ironstone and clay over limestone and benefits from cool maritime breezes each afternoon. Upon securing this location, Hammerschlag got to work in the vineyard selecting 2 clones of Shiraz: 1654, which is very typical of South Australia and Tabhilk, sourced from the oldest winery in Victoria and more reminiscent of the northern Rhone. In addition to Shiraz, the vineyard is also planted with Petite Sirah, a varietal that is naturally higher in acid, tannin and color, thereby enhancing the wine's mineral character and providing structure to the blend.
His Winemaker: With a relationship rooted in 10 years of friendship, Ben Glaetzer and Benjamin Hammerschlag share a common vision of producing wines that while they exhibit a distinct ripeness, richness and power also are balanced and vibrant.
In this first release, Hammerschlag's goal has been to produce the best wine from this particular location. He describes his role as that of managing the grapes along the way but ultimately letting this special place dictate the outcome. He happily notes that anyone laying down a bottle of this inaugural vintage is ultimately on the same journey that he is.

100% Grenache grown in the tough Ironstone laden hillside. The vines appear to float above the valley and the sea below, braving the winds off of the Southern Ocean and keeping yields achingly low, thus producing a profound Grenache of delicate balance. Aged in neutral oak for 5 months.
