Monday, March 3, 2014 - Not quite a year since the last bottle but it's getting close. I decided I wanted a syrah tonight to go with some chicken sausage. A heartier, dark red. This fit well. Has aromatics of white flower, syrah funk, some riper tones. Pours dark, almost black. Delicous blackberry, cresosote, some garrigue and sweet leather. Inky in tone. There is some acid on this wine, laying in the finish. Will look to see if air adds some grip to the total as I will enjoy this over 3 nights. I suspect it will stay as is, be a good near-term drinker.....with a day of slow-ox, I've got the feel for this syrah now. This is about the fruit--plush, good density, dark, delicious. Brimming with complexity? Well, no. Mineral? No. Fruit, texture, a bit hedonistic and berry centric, yes. And in that respect, I enjoy the wine. Some nights it's a Wind Gap or Copain, some nights it's a wine like this: all syrah, just different expressions. In the end, what this resembles are the dark, fruit driven Carlisle Russian River syrahs that I also enjoy so much. Drink window? I'd say now, as it really does well out of the chute, and with some of the light acidity, it can go for another few years, through 2016.
