Wednesday, January 16, 2013 - Delicious wine and a very characteristic example of the Rhys style. The last time Rhys bottled a San Mateo (which I think was actually an Alesia, from the Family Farm vineyard), the rationale for the declassification was obvious because it was clearly leaner and hollower than the Rhys norm, but that's not really the case here. The only thing that sets this apart from the cru bottlings is that it seems less structured (not much evident tannin) and more fruit than mineral, which isn't necessarily atypical at such a young stage anyway. The result is exceptionally drinkable, with an energy and vibrancy that almost feels like it has a foot in Beaujolais despite its rich concentration. So this is a great way to satisfy the fix for a Rhys without sacrificing something you planned to hold for the long term.
