2021 Carlisle Zinfandel Mancini Ranch

Community Tasting Note

Saturday, September 9, 2023 - I drive by and check out Mancini often. It is at a somewhat busy corner in far west Santa Rosa, yet this is a grand cru, old vine Zinfandel dominant vineyard. One with so much history, and beautiful, gnarly vines. To be perfectly transparent, I am very obsessive with the vineyards that Mike works with in the Piner-Olivet area of the Russian River Valley AVA. From what I have experienced, the finest Zinfandels out California are grown in that particular AVA. Carlisle works with the best vineyards within this relatively small area - this also includes Papa’s Block and Two Acres. With that stated, 2021 is (bold statement here) the finest vintage for Carlisle. The 2021 Mancini is astonishing. On day five it is stunning. Almost salacious. This is close to perfection. Jay Maddox, who would eschew this statement, is one of the best winemakers to ever touch a Zinfandel grape. The next round of ‘21s will released in December and I am giddy for them. I tend to engage (or should I state gulp?) in more Carlisle than wines from any other winery every year. The 2021s will eclipse my previous vintage indulgences. I have annihilated six bottle of this so far. It seriously changes every single time and the acidity is perfect. Better than ‘16, ‘18, ‘19 and ‘20 - which were all amazing. Mancini is the acid queen and has become a true icon.
