October 18, 2018 - 12,5% alcohol.
Quite developed, relatively pale and rather translucent brick-red color with a mahogany hue. Dense, concentrated and very developed nose with complex aromas of cigar smoke, wizened black cherries, beef jerky, some salty liquorice, a little bit of ripe blackcurrant, light pipe tobacco tones, a hint of somewhat animal funk and touch of charred bacon. Tons of depth here, and while the nose shows quite a bit of age, it doesn't feel like too old or past its peak. The wine is full-bodied, dense and quite concentrated on the palate with intense dry flavors of ripe black cherries, quite pronounced sour cherry bitterness, some savory oak notes of cedar and bittersweet dark chocolate, a little bit of pruney dark fruit, light tobacco tones and a hint of leathery funk. The wine feels quite muscular - especially with its high acidity and still very firm and grippy yet not aggressive tannins - but not big or monolithic. The finish is powerful, moderately bitter and rather grippy with very long, concentrated and rather brooding flavors of wizened black cherries, dark plums, some ripe blackcurrants, a little bit of savory and somewhat woody oak spice, light peppery tones, a hint of tart lingonberry and a bittersweet touch of dark chocolate.
An outstanding mature Tignanello that shows how the best vintages of this wine can stand against the test of time with remarkable ease. It feels like the wine must have been quite modern in style some decades ago with its haunting relics of concentrated dark fruit and somewhat noticeable oak tones, but the wine has come together beautifully and the oak tones have integrated wonderfully with the concentrated, developed fruit. The wine is packed with structure, yet it doesn't feel particularly angular, aggressive or too tightly-knit. The best vintage in a Tignanello vertical of vintages 1971-2004 and among the best Tuscan reds I've tasted. -

October 24, 2012 - Definitely rather aged malty nose with some ripe fruit notes, dill, herbs, coffee, chocolate, perfume and roasted meat.
Fullbodied palate of supple and juicy ripe fruit. Sweetish and dried feel to the fruit with savoury compliments. Mid-length.
Fun more than elegant. Nice anyhow. -
