Red
2005 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie La Chavaroche / La Péroline Syrah
Very dark red, dark berry, iron, meaty nose, medium weight, no funk, nice overall balance. Used for an old world vs new world (2011 Saxum) comparison. Both wines were excellent and the difference in styles highlighted. Would be quite happy to drink either one again.

5/11/24, 9:33 AM - The Levet Cote Rotie is known to take 10+ years ' The 19 years of age for the 2005 made it perfect for drinking. No signs of youth but has many years ahead for drinking I would guess. As for the Saxum, it was very smooth and easy to drink but packed with fruit and the expected Syrah characteristics of meat, iron, savory notes, light funk. A friend brought the Saxum (Booker Vineyard) so I have little experience with them, but it was certainly a pleasant drinking experience. After drinking those 2 wines I opened a 2012 Rhys Horseshoe Vineyard Syrah which I thought was the most enjoyable of the 3 wines, but it was not served side by side.

Red
2005 Paloma Merlot Spring Mountain District
Dark red color, dark berry nose develops over time, plenty of berry fruit all in perfect balance with a long very smooth finish. Just what we expected after drinking Paloma merlot wines since 1994.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy it if you were buying directly from Paloma. Otherwise buying older wines is always a risky purchase unless you really understand its history in my opinion. Our experience overall with Paloma merlot is that they age very well. good luck.

Red
2009 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Williams Selyem Estate Vineyard Russian River Valley
Usually a big prime rib roast on Christmas gets a well aged Bordeaux for dinner but we just felt like a pinot this year. The 2006 Wiliams Selyem Estate did not disappoint. A very nice dark cherry nose took about an hour of airtime and kept improving over dinner. The earthy dark cherry fruit was perfectly in balance and was very elegant overall. The finish was quite long and very smooth.

It was the 2009. My mistake. I will try to correct my tasting note.

Red
2009 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
Our first tasting of this wine (you know, drink no wine before its ti me). A gorgeous wine now for sure. Dark red color, lots of cola, dark cherry, anise, medium weight, perfect balance and very smooth. The finish was exceptionally long. Terrific!

7/2/16, 4:00 PM - I believe it was Burt Williams (of Williams & Selyem) who said a good pinot takes at least 6 years in the bottle.
