Red
Dark, burnt crimson colour. Small berries and currants in the nose. A hint of toastiness or some dried herbs? All follows through seamlessly on the palate and finish with a dry, medium length, dry tanning finish.

Decent for a supermarket value Brunello

Blackcurrant, plum and some cedar on the nose. Lean palate with more plum, cedar and toast coming through and building to a long and full finish. Tannins build gently but leave a full mouthfeel. More back-end than up front which makes it an intriguing and lovely wine
White - Off-dry

Waxy lemon, some gum notes on the nose. Good acidity and minerality on the palate but with a big hole where some fruit would have been good. Makes it unbalanced and a disappointing wine.

Ruby red colour still not really showing its age. Green pepper and some white pepper on the nose. Green pepper comes through on the palate too, a little bit of soft spice to finish. Bit lean and less fruit than last bottle.

Dark brooding colour, no real sign of age but also, not bright with youth. Nose shows a little more age with some light smoke, white pepper alongside blackcurrants and blackberries. Palate is beautifully integrated and in balance, fruit’s still there and tannins now fully integrated. Good balanced acidity and room to develop more secondary notes. Decent finish, sort of lingers more than keeps going but has length.

This is drinking superbly now and has a few more years ahead at it’s peak. Wonderful

Rich, deep golden colour, like a beautifully oiled cricket bat! Nose is sugared orange and apricot. Palate is unctuous but balanced with a decent finish, not overly complex but lovely nonetheless

Dark maroon-brown: colour definitely showing its age. Nose has hints of mushrooms and vegetal notes. Palate still has some structure but this is past any heyday it may have had

Brickish clear red colour. Little on the nose, hints of tea and white pepper maybe. Palate is similarly devoid of fruit but has balance acidity and tannins with a smokey finish. Hangs together but the lack of fruit leaves a hole

Slightly oily ‘sheen’ on the dark, clear colour. Nose has some bell peppers and secondary hints of leather. Fine, integrated palate. Not fading yet but lacking a little interest. Decent finish

Deep dark red colour with a hint of an ‘oily’ rim. Redcurrant, blackcurrant, some camphor on the nose with just a hint of dried mint. Palate is a little treacley with the alcohol coming through followed by an acidic finish. Modern, slightly concentrated and intense.

Dark only colour and little on the nose - some dark fruit maybe, possibly a whiff of espresso and vanilla? Palate is similarly nondescript, lacking fruit and a little austere in the mid-palate. Good fresh finish though with a hint of tannin and decent length. Overall a little too bland to like.

A deepish red colour with just a hint of earth but also a lovely clarity. Little nose, maybe a hint of tar? Not much fruit, more mulch and then a growing mulchy mouth feel with some fine tannins and a decent finish. Description doesn’t really do it justice as it is a lovely balanced wine that would be really very good with a hint of fruit to lift it a degree or two.

Clear with some age showing on the rim but not yet bricking. Leather and some spice on the nose, palate still has some sweet fruit followed up by some mild spice/white pepper. Lovely long, lingering finish. Truly a wonderful wine drinking superbly.

a little sour cherry. Really nice long finish.

Dark only colour. Graphite nose. Small berries and raisins on the palate. Noticeably acidity and still some tannins. Good long finish but not sure this has the fruit to balance it out for the long haul.

Burnt red colour. Dried herbs and leather nose with cherry coming through on the palate. Noticeable acidity and still some tannins. A few years left but not much fruit to hang on to so would start drinking (as lovely right now too!)

Golden orange colour, definitely showing age. Candied orange, honeysuckle and just a whiff of petrol on a complex nose. Palate is quite lean at the start but honey and candied orange comes through. Big structure supporting a beautifully aging wine.

Blackcurrant nose, tight and refined. It definitely seems closed with a lot to give. No noticeable tannins but there is a structure there to give it a decent life. Light fruity long finish

Light red colour, almost a hint of brick. Earthy mushroom nose with a little more fruit, dried or stewed strawberry, on the palate. Lovely.

Colour showing signs of (early) age. Nose of dried herbs and some berries. Meaty hints on the palate. All told, a nice Brunello but not outstanding and probably bettered by a good Chianti.

Surprise of the night. Very close run with the 2001 Meerlust Rubicon. Showed early still with good integrated fruit but then ‘faded’ a little (or the Meerlust cam forward). Still structured and years ahead of it

Quite a dark red colour but crystal clear. Nose of red cherries and some leather. Fore-palate is clear like the wine, with a hint of orange peel on top of the cherry, but then the tannins come charging to the fore. The soon settle to a decent, long finish. Elements are there but would definitely benefit with time to integrate.
