I haven’t had a Cos d’Estournel in a long time when I had the 2003, which was an abomination. This one is lovely and in a good drinking window. It’s meaty, has dark cherry fruit, and tobacco. Tannins are supple and needed just a little air to smooth the rough edges.

11/13/23, 6:19 AM - I hear you regarding the 2003. It’s a vintage that has left me disappointed to the point of selling what I had, and not just Cos. I know there are people who like the 2003 Cos, I just couldn’t enjoy it. It was missing all the markers I look for in a left bank Bordeaux.
Thanks for the comments and I hope you are on the mend.

11/14/23, 6:12 PM - I would happily drink any vintage La Mission Haut Brion! The 1 2003 I did like was Sociando Mallet. I feel it is a difficult vintage in all of Europe, but Bordeaux has a way of straightening out with plenty of age, and drinking birth year wines with your daughter is the best reason to stick with it.

This is what I want when I drink Chateauneuf du Pape, and it’s why I started out collecting them. So many changed direction but Pegau stayed true to the region. Dark cherry on the nose. On the palate, it is more subdued. It is herbaceous with prominent black pepper, black olive, and tannic. I’m glad to have 2 more, because there is so much life left.

A perplexing wine. The nose shows the deep cherry fruit I get in Black Cats, but the palate lacks any character. Little fruit and flat, and a short finish. One of us thought it was shut down, but I thought perhaps low level TCA. More than half a bottle remains, which is unusual for us.

11/5/22, 3:24 AM - For the most part, 2010 has been a wonderful vintage. However, a couple of very old school producers have made hard wines and I wonder if they will ever soften before the fruit fades. I liked Guillemot and Pavelot when released, but have been tough to enjoy ever since. I still have a bottle or two of each of them, and I, too, have my doubts that they will become pleasurable in my lifetime..I wouldn’t be as concerned if I was only 67 :)

The aromatics have really bloomed over the last few years, pretty stellar with complex spice accents to the fruit. On the palate, it’s softened, maybe too much. While pleasant enough, it comes across a bit flat. There’s good sweetness of fruit but not quite the structure or tension to match.
  • Diane (LI) commented:

12/8/21, 5:13 AM - Notes on this have been quite disappointing. I have 2 bottles and wasn’t planning on opening one anytime soon, but it almost sounds like it doesn’t have the structure to age and improve. Do you think there is an upside to holding a little longer?

I've been pleasantly surprised at the zero premox rate on W. Fevre I've had recently (tho truth be told, I don't let them get past 8 years or so)

Too early to drink. It's hard to have a never before tasted new wine sit for so long, so I decided to try. Decanted for several hours, but it took six before it began to open. Dark purple black, very extracted, gave my wife a migraine which only happens with US cabs. Definitely not meant to be approachable young. Bottom line- just too expensive. Napa has to stop. This isn't first growth. The Maiden is as good if not better. I may be burning bridges here, depending on who reads this, but $400 for a low to mid 90's Napa cab is way too much. Here is the best way to say it - if you have to question the price, it's not worth it. A bottle of 2000 Cheval is ridiculously expensive, but you don't think about that.
  • Diane (LI) commented:

12/6/16, 3:49 AM - I very much agree with your commentary on the price of Napa Cabs. I signed up for this list but never ordered. What do you think is the reason your wife gets a migraine from US Cabs? Higher alcohol?

PNP ( after a tug of war with the waiter at Autentico in Oyster bay, who kept insisting they had a Chianti we should try instead. Fortunately we prevailed, which given the poor food, saved the night. Fully mature. Decanted for about 3 hours, then enjoyed with Nassau County's best Italian restaurant. It complimented the Vitelo tonnato particularly well. The Tuscan terroir is clear, and appreciated. It's not quite as compelling as it was in past, and I think one should not wait much longer. 1/16/16, 7:20 PM - Dave - I don't drink a lot of young California Cabs but one I can wholeheartedly recommend is EMH Black Cat. If you get on the mailing list, it is released to us at $70 before it jumps a few dollars when it is officially released to the public. It is an elegant and lovely Cab. My guilty pleasure Cab is Maybach, and I have been buying a few each year since 2005, but I tend to reach for Black Cat a lot more.

1/17/16, 7:41 AM - Dave, full disclosure is I've become friends with the winery owner, but I would still be a fan of Black Cat Cabs and I describe them as bold but elegant with a good core of fruit. Looking at your tasting notes, I think you will also be fan of the wines. Feel free to mention my name if you sign up!

Just a perfect little (.375) bottle of Chardonnay. Clean and crisp with no rough edges. On our plates is a salad of arugula with sliced egg, Italian tuna, drizzled with salsa verde and toasted Sullivan St. Bread. A ray of sunshine on this dreary evening.

Drinking a 2010 is hit or miss, and this was a huge hit. The aromatics were super fragrant and there was good balance. A delicious wine.

5/15/15, 6:54 PM - I also love the vintage and I was in Burgundy and tasted them out of barrel. A few 2010s that were shut down were Jadot Corton Charlemagne, Clos des Lambrays and Guillemot Jarrons, and that is what I meant by misses in the vintage. I was catching them at the wrong time.

I expected something flamboyant, but what I got was elegance in a softly tannic frame. The nose was subtle with pure black cherry. Well balanced with ripe dark fruit, minerals, and acidity creating a velvety texture. It ends long with a final hit of tannins and punctuated by a shot of acidity.

Pretty aromatics. Good weight on the palate with tar, flowers, and ripe fruit present. Beautiful with food, and enjoyed at Scalini Fedeli with my pasta course of egg yolk ravioli with truffle butter.
