72 is one of those vintages one would not touch if it was not for a birthday. Being my first 72 this turned out to be quite an eye opener though. Fill high shoulder. Upon removing of the capsule, a dark brown hard crust on the cork became visible and the cork sank down immediately a bit. Obviously only held in place by sticking to the capsule and I found it quite amazing it could still seal the bottle. Only touching the cork was sufficient to make it fall entirely into the bottle. The first pour however revealed a beautiful garnet, about what you would expect from a Grand Cru Classe from the early 90s with a still fairly dark color in the middle and only slight browning towards the translucent rim. A pretty nose with plenty of sous bois and mushroom, still some fruit, and even fine tannins with about 1h of air. Only here and there some vegeteable tastes coming through. Medium finish.
Until today I thought CT scores in the 90s for vintages like 72 or 73 were more sentimental/nostalgia than about what really was inside but this is an amazing effort matching many high quality 75s. Might need to revisit my earlier decision of not buying any top Bordeaux when our son was born in 07. Will certainly still be a much better wine than this at age 20/30/40/50

2013 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero Nebbiolo

La Festa del Barolo Master Class Tasting (Del Posto): The nose showed the classic Burlotto Monvigliero bouquet with black olive tapenade, roses, violets, crushed cherry and minerals. On the palate, I found soft textures with pure strawberry fruits, inner florals and life-giving acidity. The finish was medium-long with lingering cherry, minerals and olive-tinged inner florals.

This wine receiving 100 points from one of the major critics is the worst thing that could have ever happened to it. In my opinion, it's a very unique wine that will only be appreciated by those who love it for being an outlier, a singular expression unlike most others. Years from now people will taste this 100-point wine and scratch their heads over it, while those who would have appreciated it, have been shut out by the massive increase in price. It's very sad.

3/12/18, 7:54 PM - Totally agree, I hope at some point for wines like this that don't have anything to prove that they don't get submitted for scores. Bye-bye $65 Monvigliero. Even the other Barolo in the stable went up in price less the normal and the the Acclivi less so but some increase. Somehow I doubt the producer gets to see much of this appreciation.

Horrible state of maturity, this did not age well or is a flawed bottle.

drank with val to celebrate her belated birthday (this bottle was from her birth year.) first of all, great condition. label was fine, the fill was still up to the neck. the foil was fine and the cork, although soaked almost to the top, was still intact. light brick colored in the glass with a bit of bronze. the nose showed cranberries, tart cherries and decaying leaves. the tannins are so soft your palate really has to search for them. the acid is high. the flavors of cranberry, earth and cellar dust are tasty, but weak. the finish drops off completely and leaves your palate feeling disappointed. drinkable? yes. enjoyable? yeah. would i purchase it for any other reason than to open for my girlfriend? no. she ended up saying she didn't like the wine at all but it was the thought that counted. this wine is way past its prime. fortunately, the woman i bought it for isn't :-)
