Another nondescript blend trading on the parent name. If you are tempted to buy it, walk down to the other end of the shelf and look for either Conundrum or Educated Guess red blends, both are better at half the price.

5/14 Another bottle, 89 with 90 minutes in decanter.

5/1/24, 6:39 PM - It's like all critics, you have to find one who shares your tastes. If Rex Reed hated a movie (Alien) I knew I'd like it and vice versa (Annie Hall). Robert Parker's tastes were a perfect match for mine, I took his ratings as Gospel. FWIW, I gave a bottle of Conundrum to a nephew and he hated it too :) Thanks for your input.

Another bottle, best yet... a hint of must in the nose on opening but it blew off. The wine took 90 minutes to show its stuff, then it came on like a train for an hour, even reached 96 for us. We got plums and sweet prunes, no tannin at all, super smooth. What a treat for my 83rd B'day!

I had the no 2 syrah back when and it didn’t move me. But far as I can tell, Jim seems to have struck gold with his 19 and 20 vintages. The 19 EABA is magical, and this no 9 syrah is no less alluring. Bravo.

Some browning and a lot of sediment but still very much alive. A dark and heavy character with some tar, but quite flavorful. We enjoyed this grand old Napa royalty.

I always feel a bit of irritation for Beringer... in about 1996 or 7 I went looking for big bottles of the highly touted 1994 Napa vintage. When I called Beringer the girl said their computer showed 20 Double Mags of the Reserve at $225 a pop. Wow! I said I would take them all (we had a group at work who loved these things). She gasped and said she would have to get the Sales Manager. He got on the phone and I repeated that I wanted to buy the DMs of '94 Reserve. He hesitated and then said, "It's only one to a customer." I said, "OK, I'll give you a list of 20 buyers and 20 credit cards." He thought for a minute and then replied, "They have to be picked up at the winery by the buyers." I said "I get it, F-U" and hung up. Never bought another Beringer.
  • seijaro commented:

12/19/23, 10:58 AM - Thanks, Joel... the DM thing came from a deal on 1991 Mondavi Reserve. A guy on the Exchange was a small partner of one of the big NYC wine dealers... the dealer needed to make room and raise money for the new Bordeaux vintage, called my friend and said he had 25 DMs of Mondavi Reserve that he would sell cheap. My guy canvassed his known wine drinker friends and was over-subscribed in 30 minutes :) He bid the dealer $90 a bottle and we bought them. I got three, what great gifts two made! I drank the third with three other couples at a dinner :)

Couldn't resist opening this new Bevan Chardonnay, but bad me. Color in the glass was a bit cloudy...not the usual darker straw color that I'm used to seeing from Bevan. Detected a touch of sulfur with lemon, citrus and grasses in the aroma. More of the same in the taste. After being open for a hour or so, things did get better. The Mrs. really liked it at that point. For me, I never recovered.

I had just taken delivery a little over a week ago, so I'm guessing I ran into a bit of bottle shock and general youth as a result of my impatience. My fault. Good thing I have another bottle...I'm going to wait a while before trying again. I think I'll be rewarded then.

Drank alongside a 2016 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf, it was preferred by 3 of the 4 drinkers: 97, 97, 97, 96. A beautiful CA Cab, loaded with flavor but still smooth as silk. A big one for those like us who like a smack in the teeth.
  • seijaro commented:

7/23/23, 6:17 PM - I use Parker's 3-hour method: decant the wine to a pitcher, wash the bottle out with non-chlorinated water, let it drip dry. Pour the wine back in the bottle, put the cork in 1/2 inch upside down. When you pour it three hours later, one swirl in the glass and it gives you everything it's got.

I've had two bottles of this now I really don't get the scores here. For me this is an over-ripe, over hot fruit bomb that is nothing like CdP is supposed to be. It is the epitome of Parkerisation in the extreme. I've tried drinking when opened, when decanted for various times out to 48 hours and it doesn't get much more palatable. It's just about drinkable with 24+ hours of air, but if what you look for in a CdP includes elegance, complexity and sophistication then steer well clear of this wine. My ~US$100 spent on two bottles of this could have bought me 6 bottles of far superior wine.
  • seijaro commented:

6/26/23, 12:35 PM - I have to think your bottles came from a bad case, it happens. I once had a whole case of DRC that was bad... not spoiled, just bad, like maybe it got frozen or cooked in transport. Your tastes are usually not as far from the community as this.

Named for the Soil

While many wine regions are defined by their location, I have run across my first that is identified by its soil composition; Gimblett Gravels. An area of approximately 800 hectares (2,000 acres) is defined by a particular local soil stratum known as the Omahu Gravels.

Meaningful as the Craggy Range Winery was established in 1998 as the vision of the Peabody Family in and around this region of New Zealand. The wine I’m reviewing is their

Craggy Range Te Muna Martinborough Sauvignon Blanc 2022

Noting a couple of 92- and 93-Point reviews alerted me to this wine. The combination of 10% Whole Cluster press and the use of French Oak (3% new barrel for 3 months) alongside Stainless Steel fermentation vessels and their focus on sustainability, sealed the deal for me as a “have to try” wine.

Being the Sauv Blanc aficionado that I am, I was hooked after the first sip. Bright and refreshing with tropical fruit nuances (think mango and pear) with the acidity giving it a certain pazazz and the slight oak influence adding texture to the overall experience. A true delight.

With the advent of Spring and Summer befalling us here in the States, this is a wine that begs for a warm day or cool night alongside light appetizers or an easy dinner of seafood. Give it a try for yourself.

Cheers

Wonderful spicy goodness from a favorite vineyard and a favorite winemaker. This was an unexpected pull out of the cellar by my wife and I was a bit apprehensive that this was still too early. I gave it time in the glass but did not decant. I love the spice box and poutporri notes this vineyard always delivers. Blackberry notes with a full and hedonistic body. Full flavored and palate coating without being overbearing in the slightest. My apprehension turned to appreciation well before the last glass was emptied.

Not much to add about this wine that hasn't already been noted. Powerful is an understatement. If someone were to ask how far a wine can be pushed to the upper limits of extreme without becoming too much, this wine could be provided as Exhibit A.

While this might not be my preferred style of wine, I couldn't stop revisiting it throughout the night - mostly in complete awe of what it is able to accomplish. The best analogy for this wine is to compare it to a high end McIntosh amp. While it's one thing to be able to amplify something to an extremely high level, it's in a whole other stratosphere when you can amplify AND still retain purity.

Everyone should experience a wine like this at least once their lifetime. While it might not necessarily be something that you will ever choose to revisit, it is almost guaranteed that you'll find yourself marveling at the mastery contained within a bottle like this.
  • seijaro commented:

12/16/22, 1:51 PM - I enjoyed your great review of Janasse CDP. As a magazine editor, I can't resist improving it a little by correcting the grammar in the sentence "Everyone owes it to themselves to experience a wine like this at least once (in) their lifetime." Since "Everyone" is singular, it takes singular pronouns, so "their" is not correct unless they are all Trans. It should be Everyone owes it to himself to experience it in his lifetime. If the gender is mixed or unknown, the masculine is correct. If that is too un-PC for you, you have to either use the cumbersome "his or her" or reword the sentence to something like "Everyone should experience ... onjce in a lifetime."
Best regards, keep those great reviews coming! Bob

Curious in light of Dunnuck’s 97 rating. I wasn’t a big fan of the last couple vintages because I thought they were too fruit forward and quite rich/sweet but this vintage is a pleasant surprise - not as rich/sweet and more structure. Dark ruby fruit - dark cherry, currants, and blackberry. Smooth mid-palate with a nice purity and solid depth/concentration. Nice vibrant flavors of dark berries, some spice/licorice, cassis, and a little mineral component. Decent finish but not overly long nor deep - it needs more time to open-up with the finish. Decanted for two hours and drank over a couple more. Improved a little with time. Set some aside for day two and it was better - it opened-up some more. A nice vintage of this wine. I personally don’t see the 97 rating but hopefully more time proves me wrong. 95 appears to makes sense to me in another year or two. 93 on day one and 94 on day two. A miss from LPB of WA with her 91+ rating. 100% cab.
  • seijaro commented:

I tend to discount his big scores, we have never duplicated them. For our money, the CT community is far more reliable... in this case three 93s and three 94s (including yours) vs. Jeb's 97.

Alban Pandora is singular aside from the sexy-looking Oscar Award bottling. I have tasted multiple times and tried to triangulate with CDP grenaches; the closest I could have come up with a hybrid of 2017&18 Domaine Prefert Charles Giraud for its floralness and 2016 Pierre Usseglio cuvee Mon Aieul for its candied fruit profile.

Pandora has a balance of both blue and red fruits with intermixed sweet ripened raspberry and rose notes, unlike my another favorite Alban Grenache Estate that has dark fruit profile (reminds me of my favorite 2016 Vieille Julienne hauts lieux or 2016 Janasse Chaupin). Pandora grenache is even more feminine than its sibling Grenache Estate. We did a few horizontal tastings with above mentioned wines.

Though it's planted on sandstone soil, it doesn't have the "downside" of bright acidity and (under-ripened) kirsch profile . The texture of Pandora elixir is pure, seamless, weightless and full body with great viscosity (could it be due to its 3-4 years of barrel aging?) with ultra fine polished tannins.

Scoring Range: 97-100; 98++ and can't wait for it to peak in a few years

We thought RHONEWHO was exuberant with his 99 score, now we agree. This is celestial. I hate to pay $200 for a wine but once in a while it's worth it... this is one.

Second pass at this one. Initial pnp was identical to last time: tight, monolithic with unripe and undistinct dark berry flavors. However we had some left over for two days, and two days of air did mellow this wine out a lot. Not that much more open (in the sense that it was still hard to delineate particular fruit flavors apart from blackberry I guess) but tannins much more in synch with the fruit. Although I still find it hard to be quite as enthusiastic as Leve, there is no doubt that a good long time in the cellar will make this a lot more pleasurable and at least good value - who knows, maybe more.
Score: 90 (up from 88 before).
Relative to expectations: +

Pleasant but kind of disappointing... a bit thin and austere. We have other everyday Cabs that we like a lot better for less money. Not a buyer for us, will try the Napa.

A nice wine... doesn't really say Merlot to us (maybe Malbec?) but it's a lovely red at a bargain price. We keep searching for a Merlot like the ones we remember from the 1990s before everybody pulled it out in favor of Syrah, like Saint Francis Reserve or the celestial but expensive Pahlmeyer. This ain't it but it's an enjoyable dinner wine. We'll keep looking.

Shy nose with cab. sav. features. The palate is a fairly tight package, fruit is not ripe and wide, nothing like recently tasted Robert Craig cab. sav. Mt. Veeder or Etude cab. sav. of the same vintage, instead the expression is focused and firm, dark cassis fruit, graphite, anise, hints of violets, cedar and a bit salty feel. Good fresh acidity and resolved but still present tannins complement the quite harmonious set-up. The finish is long and gum drying. This is very enjoyable and drinking well now, no need to rush though.

This gets a rating of NR. No flaws, but this comes across as a creation rather than an interpretation. I know Bevan’s style (and quite like it with Bordeaux varietals), and have even enjoyed the 2016 version of this a few years back, but this seems too wonky.

There are some fruits that should be dipped in chocolate and others that shouldn’t...pomegranate is one that shouldn’t, and this tastes like fondue dipped pomegranate. It looks like Cabernet in the glass. On the nose, there is raspberry cordial, licorice, fruit cake and spices. While known for big ABV wines, this clocks in at 14.3 and while it may be a tick above that, this doesn’t seem overly hot. The entry and mid palate have great acidity, but the amount of stiff tannin on the finish have me checking the bottle to make sure I’m not drinking a Cabernet. The palate is rich and turned up to 11 of pomegranate, candied black cherries, cedar, cocoa powder and baking spices. Overly grape-y. These are well made wines, and while not a style I enjoy, I can normally find enjoyment from these ever so often. May just be a one off for the vintage (or maybe just my bottle!).

Four bottle shipment arrived a few weeks ago from the winery with signs of seepage from all 4 foil caps. For all I'm hearing about how the more 'approachable now' '19 vintage is, it's still proving to me that this vintage needs a healthy decant too, in order to drink now.

I coravined a glass of this 2 nights in a row and then popped the cork tonight on the half bottle that was left, so Carol and I could each have a glass before dinner.

Results? First two nights this wine was thick, heavy, syrupy and over the top in need of a 2 hour decant at least to be drinkable. Rich, decadent zin fruit, heavy, cab-like profile as far as structure with more than a hint of smokey barrel char to it.

Open bottle tonight given a 1 hour decant after most probably slow ox'ing due to the coravin the past 2 nights....and it was singing. Carol still thought it drank like a cab, but she didn't get to taste it the first 2 nights or she would have flipped out. Tonight? Much reduced intensity, much more put together and balanced, but still with some smokey char to the ending. It was not enjoyable drinking it the first 2 nights. High quality, but I would have given it a 90 at best. Tonight? 93 pts. Don't think I'll let the other 3 bottles age more than a year, given the seepage from shipment that I observed.

We can't get to those big numbers... we got a big CA Cab with nothing unusual or distinctive. Yes, quite good and fun to drink but $300? That's nuts. We have had 97-99 point wines over the years and this isn't in that rarefied league.
I have to decry the heavy dark bottle in the strongest terms... it's eyewash to manipulate the consumer by suggesting quality. All it does is make it harder to decant, increases shipping costs, and fouls up my storage racks. Lafite doesn't do it, DRC doesn't do it, only CA does it. Please stop.

1/5/22, 5:56 PM - Sorry, Jake, I forgot what I paid and went by the Wine-Searcher number at the upper right. Turns out I paid $480 for a 3-pack with shipping and tax, so the $162 at the lower right is probably correct. My bad. Nevertheless, the price seems high for a wine we gave 93.

Interesting Napa Cab. There's a little bit of a roasted note that points to the hot vintage, but it's not too bad. Seems kind of tight and wound up still, even on the second evening (stoppered overnight). Acid was pretty high and stuck out a bit. Not the most attractive flavor profile but an interesting drink for the $22 I paid for it.

10/31/21, 9:58 AM - I’m guessing you liked the wine but I don’t waste time reading a review with no numerical score. Did you like it a lot (93) or just a little (86)? It’s not complicated, it mirrors your grammar school grades: A = 90 and above, B = 80-89, C = 70-79… below that is “Dislike.”

11/21/21, 1:41 PM - To Rat: "points mean nothing"? Maybe you should ask Robert Parker, the world's best taster, who popularized the 100-point scale. But I guess you know more about wine than he does. Riiight.

11/22/21, 6:24 AM - A score tells me how much YOU liked the wine. After that, the trick is to find raters whose taste reflects yours. It's like movie critics: if Rex Reed liked one I knew I'd hate it, but if Ebert did I watched.

11/23/21, 11:24 AM - Depends on how you use it... when I get an email solicitation for wine (I get a lot of them) the first thing I do is look it up on Cellar Tracker. We are hard markers, our ratings are almost always several points lower than the pros who award points on things like color and aroma. We score almost exclusively on taste. If the CT score is 90 or above, I look further, if it is in the 80s I just delete the email. Numbers are valuable to me.

11/24/21, 10:03 AM - It's a big cellar... when I receive new allocations like the current crop of 2019s and have to find room, I often find old stuff I let go way too long. Recently found 5 bottles of 1993 Montelena, was astonished that it was still so good, usually they have faded away. Biggest recent surprise, however, was that the mag of 1974 Mayacamas was alive and well :)

11/25/21, 6:07 AM - RichEB1 thinks Montelena doesn't fade? ALL wines fade. They improve in the bottle for varying lengths of time until they reach a plateau of full development. They remain there for varying years, depending on how they were made and stored. Eventually they ALL start to decline, including giants like Lafite. The fruit dries out and eventually mostly disappears.
I recently found five bottles of the '93 Montelena in my cellar and am enjoying them, the first was 92, next one was 94. But they are less robust and fresh than they were 10-12 years ago when we drank the other seven. All wines fade.

Another nice surprise: not dead yet and in fact rather nice. Sure, past its prime but still quite flavorful and fun to drink. A mature CA classic vineyard that has held for almost 30 years because it has been perfectly cellared since release.

11/4 Another bottle, even nicer than the last: a solid 94. What a treat!
