Samples from Bill #9/10/11; 11/23/2023-11/25/2023: Funky profile - cloves, meaty brett, herbal undergrowth and graphite. Flavour dips a bit into the metallic brett zone which flattens the rest of the palate. Not really a lot of enjoyment on this bottle unfortunately.

11/25/23, 7:29 PM - This was decanted into a small sample bottle for me and I had it a few nights later but the person took it to dinner on opening and the feedback from the table was very similar.

I've had some very good bottles of the 2000 Musar as well so hopefully this bottle was just a one-off.

Snuck it into the cinema (Dr Strage II - first movie since Covid hit in early 2020 - YAY!) and drank it from Riedel stemless glasses. Drinking well - stony minerality, decent acid, good length, if a touch flabby. Maybe reminiscent of a village Meursault from a hot year.

SLDS July 2020 - Re-United: From half-bottle. Golden coloured. Orange, spice, lemon, caramel, violet, coconut and apricot. Rich, full flavoured, botrytis sits at the fore. Sweet but has a tangy note on the palate. Good length and very nice ending to a tasting.
  • CamWheeler commented:

11/1/20, 1:43 PM - Forgot to mention in the note that this was a 375ml so that may change things if you have full bottles?

It had plenty of enjoyment now but I wouldn't call it complex on the palate - I think that big burst of botrytis is going to stay prominent for quite some time so it's probably a fair while away from feeling fully integrated.

Personally I think if you have half bottles I think now at 14-15 years is decent for a check in point but no huge hurry either if you want to see more depth.

The color was pale straw. There was no bouquet. I was very disappointed with this bottle. It was not like prior year ausleses from this vineyard and producer. There was minimal sweetness. the fruit was minimal. There was a mild effervescence which, though interesting, did not compensate for the lack of expected honey sweetness that I have experienced in the past. OK, but not worth the price.

JJ Prum - 2017 range tasting: From 750ml. Mango, coconut, pear, vanilla, apricot, lemon and waxy notes on the concentrated and swirling nose. The palate brings a rush of emotion - incredible intensity with layers upon layers of flavour and complexity. Mouthwatering, spellbinding - the depth and definition is off the charts. The length lives up to the same quality levels, with astounding drive giving it an awe inspiring finish. What an incredible high to finish the tasting on, I think this is likely the best bottle of JJ Prum I've ever tasted.

SLDS Single Bottle Dinner: Aromatics are a level up on the '37 Coutet with extra intensity and verve - orange peel, chocolate, lemon, peach and coconut. Lovely tandy acid on the palate with the caramel playing a supporting role. Excellent length and sweetness. Though there is some volatility, it does not significantly distract from the wine for me.

Tangy acidity lifts the wine up with the sweetness siting in the background. Very good length, this is still very primary. It's not clear to me that this is actually a vintage wine. It was the listing in CT so I went with it but I don't believe it's listed on the label. Disgorgement is from late 2017 so it's possible to be a wine of 2014 but being Champagne this could also be a blend. I think the notion of blurring the lines between vintage and NV/MV wines is the hipster thing to do but they should at least provide some clarity on the label.

This drank more spiced and savory than fruited. You could almost guess a wine from somewhere besides Champagne served blind, at least on the nose. The palate shows more power though like you expect from the region versus most other sparkling wines. It also shows more balance between the savory and the decadent here. The fruit stands up and gives you reason to come back for more. I still have to say overall that this leans more intellectual than pleasurable. There is something regal here. There is obvious care with the wine making. But at $70 it's really pushing the limits of value. I'd say there is a chance this develops some with shorter-medium term cellaring.
  • CamWheeler commented:

  • CamWheeler commented:

10/28/17, 6:37 AM - There seem to be a few premox issues with Trimbach around the late 90s and early 2000s, this bottle may have been a somewhat mild case of that, it still had good acid but the fruit profile was rounding out quite a bit and the dark colour was a bit concerning, enough so that I wouldn't have wanted to risk another 5 years with this particular bottle. Also possible that it had seen sub-optimal storage at some point rather than being premox related.

AP #02 under screwcap. Quite exotic on the nose, plenty of smoky sulfur, intense white florals, pineapple, peach, grapefruit, red cherry and pear, with a light touch of herbs in the background as well as an interesting licorice note. Intense flavour on the palate, before a tangy mineral acid core sweeps through and gives it spark. Wonderfully pure fruit, with great length and really quite excellent depth for its age. Much too young of course, but it has all the components to make a great wine in time.

The wine is clear and bright with a pale gold colour and presence of legs. The nose is clean and fully developed, showing medium(+) intensity aromas of yellow apple, neutral yeast, green olives and acetaldehyde. The wine is dry in the mouth with a low acidity. It has low soft tannins and a high alcohol. It has a medium(-) body and medium(+) intensity flavours of yellow apple, neutral yeast, green olives and acetaldehyde. The finish is medium(+).

It is a very good quality wine. It has a very nice flavour concentration and a pretty good finish. It shows clearly the typicity of a Manzanilla, however a better example of this style would be a bit more complex. Drink now, it is fully developed, so there is no point in ageing it.

Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino 1970-2006 (Magnum) (maze by Gordon Ramsey, London): This wine is almost certainly better than my score, which probably reflects a bit of palate fatigue and the bottle's primary state after a long and overwhelming evening. A powerful wine. Notes of balsamic, licorice and dried flower petals. Really elegant, despite evident acidity.

Wines of the Mediterranean: Cheesy, with some pineapple and lemon rind. Texturally very good with nice flow and length. Has richness but also good acidity to carry it.

4/18/14, 6:46 PM - I guess like a yeasty/cheesy type aroma you might get on some Champagne. I didn't find it off-putting but it was there. Dave described it as "freshly broken apart roast chicken breast" if that is more meaningful!

I should be there in June, no idea what I'll bring yet but hopefully it'll be better than my last bottle.

JJ Prum - 2012 Range (Sydney, Australia): Has an intensity to it similar to the 2012 Graacher Himmelreich, with a aroma profile including peach, pear, honey, deep floral perfume as well as a herb note on the side that provides an additional layer of interest. The sweetness here is intense but pure, avoiding dipping into syrup territory. There is a saline character to the acidity that enhances the flavour and cleanses the fruit. With a rich butterscotch sauce the sweetness retreated somewhat but the wine was not overwhelmed. A marvellous note to finish on.

Lovely, expressive nose. Red fruits - cherries and strawberries. But there is also a dark, earthy, iron component. The palate is intense and is carried by finely balanced acids and tannins. It's got the precise, 'correct', Rousseau stamp of approval. Not a thing out of place. And so much life ahead of it still.
