3/18/24, 10:50 AM - Which vintage did you mean to open?
3/3/24, 6:50 AM - I'm with you. I had similar feelings about the 2017 vintage of this cuvee. I do have 1 bottle of the 2019 and I'm not expecting much from it. I just don't see the high ratings for their Cabernets.
2/18/24, 7:25 AM - Thanks for the note. I just found a few "leftover" bottles in my cellar. I was assuming they were past their prime. But now I'll open one up with my wine group.
2/11/24, 6:37 AM - I'm right there with you about expectations. When a pro-reviewer has rated a wine (not just this one) 100 points, there is nowhere to go but down. While I'm not a big fan of blind tastings, sometimes, they have their place.
5/18/23, 11:03 AM - Vince, this is my first vintage of this wine, so I really don't know, and I have only 2 bottles left, that I'll probably finish this year. My best guess for aging to compare it to a Chardonnay that it reminded me of, the Shafer Red Shoulder Ranch. I think as it ages, it picks up more nutty and sherry flavors. Wish I could be more helpful.
5/9/23, 8:42 AM - Joostentamara, you are of course correct! That is what I get for cutting and pasting from a different bottle of wine when I'm on a hurry. This wine was part of a mostly Sangiovese night, and was the lone non-Sangiovese wine.
3/19/23, 1:05 PM - Dave, turns out this was my 3rd bottle of this vintage and I was able to look up my tasting notes for the other 2 bottles. I definitely liked the first two (in 2018 and 2016), but this one was far and away the best of the three. Age has been kind to this bottle!
3/8/23, 11:08 AM - Luke....I'm so bad with German wines and the terminology, that I didn't know that!!! Thanks for the help!
2/25/23, 7:23 AM - Sagan99, the other To Kalon was 2013 Bacio Divino Cabernet Sauvignon Janzen Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, which I thought was ever so slightly better than the Mondavi. The other flight consisted of 2 Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Cabs. a 2013 Realm, and a 2012 Paul Hobbs.
2/25/23, 7:24 AM - By the way, I've had th 2013 Mondavi To Kalon, and it was very good! I've never had the 2014, but I'm sure it is similarly tasty. Nice pickup at auction!
1/20/23, 9:24 AM - I'm never sure what to pair with Paolo Bea's Sagrantino wines, what do you think goes well with this one?
11/26/22, 5:16 PM - Hey buddy , can you give me a call about this one?
4/5/22, 7:05 PM - We were both at this dinner! Glad you liked this wine!
3/30/22, 11:54 AM - Al, When do you think this will be ready to drink? - Stephen
12/26/21, 7:19 PM - I just opened one tonight. I'll post the review tomorrow, but I loved it!
3/11/21, 11:58 AM - I have one bottle left. I keep meaning to open and enjoy it!
11/12/20, 7:31 PM - Sheldog, I have one left! Thanks for the update.
2/10/20, 7:53 AM - csimm1161 and mhewitt, I had taken the following from the Becklyn web site, under the winemaker section. It lead me to believe he was the winemaker for the Rivers-Marie Cabs. I was unable to find the winemaker on the R-M website. Many thanks for the clarification!"Today, Mike continues to work with Thomas on several labels (i.e. Rivers-Marie, Maybach and Tamber Bey). The Becklyn Cellars wines are custom crushed alongside these greats… showcasing Mike’s talents and stylistic “purist” approach to winemaking."As for liking Thomas Rivers Brown's winemaking style better than Mike Smith's, it is very possible. I have greatly enjoyed the Rivers-Marie Pinot Noirs, which is why I decided to buy and try their Cabs.
2/3/20, 11:17 AM - Not a bad idea. Sadly, this dinner was so long ago, that even though I know what restaurant we ate at, I have no idea what we ordered. Maybe going forward.
1/8/20, 1:54 PM - Great note, on this, and other Mike Smith Cabs. A quick question, I'm thinking of hosting a wine dinner with my group, centered around different producer's Mike Smith's wines. As they are all much younger than I usually drink CS, I'm wondering what foods will go best with them. Any thoughts?
12/29/19, 8:23 AM - Mazik, Thanks for your note. I never did try another bottle. When I contacted the retailer that I bought the six pack from, they graciously offered to take back the remaining 5 bottles and refund me for all 6 bottles that I had purchased from them.
12/6/19, 8:03 AM - MarcS, many thanks for the advice. I have 4 more bottles, and I plan to wait at least a year, maybe 2 before the next one. I was just so surprised, as I had a bottle of this in 2017 and really loved it. It can be so hard to wait for a wine to mature!
10/28/19, 11:27 AM - SRH, thanks for the note. While I wrote down what I paid for this, $24.00 delivered, I somehow didn't write down when or where I got it! I hadn't noticed Dunnuck's rating inflation, I think I just missed it, but Sucklings notes have to be taken with a grain of salt (or two). As for my feelings on the wine, it might have gotten lost in the shuffle at dinner, between a Sonoma Pinot Noir I really liked, and a WA state Bordeaux style wine that I loved. Maybe on its own, I would have enjoyed it more.
7/30/19, 8:30 AM - Tward, That is when I bought it, thanks! I need to figure out a way to designate mystery wines in my purchase info.
6/26/19, 6:47 AM - Nice note, and great price! I'm holding a few bottles of this vintage, and actually wrote the winery 2 days ago for some advice on a drinking window. They recommended waiting a few more years.
6/21/19, 11:57 AM - Yack Man, I always like your reviews (I only see the ones on wines that I have in my inventory), so I'm disappointed to read this. I have been waiting to open one of mine, perhaps I'll do so soon. But for the price and the WA review, I expect better from this producer. It seems odd to ask, but could the wine be in a dumb phase?
6/14/19, 8:26 AM - Margaux Bro, sorry, I was too lazy to set up a tasting story! We had, in order, 1 white, 2018 Collestefano Verdicchio di Matelica, 4 reds: 2016 Azienda Agricola Montevertine Pian del Ciampo, 2013 Paolo Scavino Barolo, 2014 El Nido Clio, and the 2016 Leviathan. All magnums. I probably should have added about the Paolo Scavino, that the cork gave me concern. It was sunk into the bottle and came out so easy, that I thought the wine have suffered from early oxidation. But the nose was great, and it showed no flaws on the palate. Some of the reviews I read indicated it was ready to drink, so I gave it a go. Usually I figure 10 years, give or take, from the vintage date for Barolos.
3/15/19, 12:42 PM - LOL!!! I may be inspired to try something similar!
3/15/19, 12:21 PM - I've always liked this Hobbs wine. Nice going on the price, I bought it direct from the winery. Which means I overpaid. I'll have to try the Carter.
2/27/19, 8:02 AM - Abharwine, the wine list was, 2013 The Farm Winery Touchy-Feely (WOTN), 2013 Martinelli Syrah Vellutini Ranch (2nd favorite), 2014 Clio, 2013 Bodegas y Viñedos Maurodos Toro Viña San Román (finished close behind the Clio), and the 2012 Familia Nin-Ortiz Priorat Planetes de Nin, which we liked, but I think it came in last.
12/28/18, 8:02 AM - Sorry for the delay to your question...I paid $30, delivered in from an out of state retailer. Not sure I would go for $40, I guess it would depend on what else WL has available for $40. But I did like the wine.
9/24/18, 6:21 AM - Thanks for the review..I'm still waiting for my bottles to arrive, thanks to the searing summer we had...But I'll lay my bottles down for a few years before trying them.
5/14/18, 9:18 AM - #1, very impressed that you called the winery. Good to know that with an extended decant this is drinkable now. Did you post a note on the Shafer? How was that?
4/2/18, 12:55 PM - Not just magnums, but double mags...I am envious!
3/12/18, 1:28 PM - I haven't tried either 2015 yet. But bought 2 more bottles of the Bard than the Falstaff. No you have me regretting my choice :-) I'm going to wait a year before trying either. Thanks for the note.
3/12/18, 7:54 AM - Dave, It is possible, as I think my bottle was a little young to be past its prime. But that was my last bottle, so I'll never know.....
2/8/18, 10:36 PM - Ron, one additional note. Stand the bottle upright for at least a day. The was a lot of sediment in my bottle.
1/25/18, 11:20 AM - Love your notes on the event. I was at a similar one in NYC on the 23rd. Maybe I got a funny bottle of this, but it tasted very green.
1/7/18, 9:48 AM - I see you have gone through 3 bottles of this already! I only bought 4 of them, do you think I should wait a bit longer before opening one? I usually Pop 'n pour in a restaurant.
11/22/17, 12:07 PM - dc8, Good question, this is my first vintage of Doubleback and I don't have a great feel for how it will age. I'm thinking, that unless you really like the secondary flavors and aromas that a 10+ year old wine can have, its at its peak. But that is just my guess.
11/2/17, 10:03 AM - Is this too tannic to go with Asian food (right now)? Thanks, Stephen
9/12/17, 2:49 PM - Did you reseal the bottle after each time you tried it? Or did you leave it open for all three days?
8/21/17, 1:18 PM - Sorry, I purchased it from Garagiste. And I paid $33 per bottle. I have edited my tasting note to show the correct retailer that I purchased this from.
8/23/17, 3:03 PM - I'm not sure how to delete my comment, but it turns out I bought 4 bottles of the 2011 from Garagiste, AND 4 bottles of the NV, also from Garagiste. The NV ones have arrived, and that is the one I tried (and was disappointed in). I will be updating my inventory, and reposting my notes there. By the way, the 2011's have not yet arrived. Sorry for the confusion.
8/2/17, 12:48 PM - Loved your entire Hillside Vertical tasting story. I just wish there was a place to post a comment on the entire thing. But I'll just put a few things here, with the 2011. 1st. Wow, this sounds like a great event. 2. Great notes, thanks very much. 3. Nice notes on the 2011, a tough vintage, but Shafer did a great job with what nature gave them that year.
7/29/17, 10:14 AM - RayT, not really. It was probably open for almost an hour before we tried this. To be fair, my notes rarely take into account an extended (90 minutes or more) breathing time, as I usually bring and open my wines at restaurants that are corkage friendly.
5/28/17, 5:56 AM - I opened a bottle last night and the wax capsule is the only reason that I don't purchase Dunn anymore. It was a 2003 vintage and the cork came out in pieces. I would have used the Durand, but I couldn't get it in the bottle until I had already tore out half the cork with a corkscrew, which cleared out the wax enough to then get the durand in to remove the rest of the cork.
4/20/17, 9:33 AM - I have seen this kind of scoring from a few posters, is there a place I can get a breakdown of this type of scoring? Thanks. By the way, thanks for the detailed note on the 2013 Monte Bello. I'm always hesitant to drink my MBs so young, but it looks like you loved this one.
4/20/17, 10:36 AM - Thanks for the clarification. Agree that starting at 50 points is helpful. As for giving out high scores, I too am hesitant to give out the top scores. I just checked my scoring history, and 8% of my notes have scores of 95, 96 or 97. With just 3 of them 97 point scores, I haven't posted anything higher. I've been fortunate to have some RP 100 pointers, but I just don't see posting that type of score.
4/19/17, 8:34 AM - How long do you think you will need to wait until trying it again? I usually find the they need at least a decade from vintage date to hit their stride.
2/6/17, 8:57 AM - I am guessing a second bottle of this was not opened?
2/6/17, 8:56 AM - Great to read your tasting notes on the Napa Valley Master Class. A quick question on this wine... Was it decanted, or opened in advance of the tasting? And if so, for how long? PS- wish I could post a comment direct to the tasting story, instead of on each wine.
1/20/17, 11:03 AM - I was underwhelmed by my first bottle from this vintage, but I popped and poured it. Reading the recent comments, a multiple hour decant seems to be required. Did you pop and pour this? Open it and let it sit? Or decant it, and for how long? Thanks, Stephen
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
