I took one sip of this and turned to Nordhoff and asked "have you tasted this one?" He said "yeah I bought a case." Okay then, it's just not me.

It's hard to believe that this is the first vintage from Rivers Marie and I think only the 3rd or 4th leaf from the vineyard. This is already an amazing wine and to think that as the vines mature it's going to get better? Holy cow.

I'm a fan boy of the Santa Cruz mountains but you could convince me that Bodega deserves to be on the short list.

Popped and poured. Truly a terrible showing for this wine.

Poured it down the drain, then felt bad for the poor drain. Glad it was my last bottle.

Frizzanté!!! Such a bummer. Was cellared properly so hopefully a perversion of nature.

Big Meat and Serious Syrah on a gorgeous summer afternoon (Westport, CT): On the nose, I initially found this to be a bit bretty with some sweaty horse aromas on initial pouring - with time in the glass this blew off. Still quite young tasting to me with a blackberry and bramble profile and a bit of sharpness on the finish. Think this will benefit from more cellaring.

    8/8/17, 4:50 AM - "pretty" or "bretty"? :)

At 10 years, it's giving some new flavors of sandalwood and forest floor while still retaining blackberry undertones. The cab franc makes it meaty and garrigue. Complex in what is now older age - aren't we all? Enjoy.

8/28/16, 2:42 PM - Is this note for the 2008 vintage? That is only 8 years old right now

Smoke and leather. Tons of complexity on the nose, but a bit less on the palate. Big hit with the crowd, but the 77 side by side was much better

3/12/16, 6:56 AM - We decanted only to get sediment off, but then poured it within 15 minutes. I don't think it needs much time to open up, but we left it in the glass for another 15 before drinking. So total air time was 30 mins.

TN: Rhone dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): A bit of controversy as it is the second wine that I think to be corked where a couple tasters enjoy immensely and have strong conviction it is not corked. Two wait staff, one a former sommelier, also think it is not corked. It is a very polished La Turque with beautiful balance. May be someone else can chime in.
  • mclancy10006 commented:

1/24/16, 8:30 AM - This happens to me more than it should with the Rhone where the wine has Brett that I taste and makes it undrinkable for me and everyone else raves about it...

Prior tasting notes were all over the place on long decant vs PnP. So, did a two hour decant, at that point was a pretty bold, fruit forward 95 point cab. But after another hour, fruit started fading and it became more earthy and smoky, kind of aged Bordeaux like. If your preference is a fruit dominant US cab, suggest a pop & pour, if you are more a left bank Bordeaux fan, a two hour decant will get you there.

11/13/15, 3:52 PM - Thanks for adding the color on the P&P vs. decant this is always good to know.

The same wine, not Vielles Viignes, but from another bottle was very good, 88. Nice fruit at the opening, with some tannic character to follow. Excellent with a game bird and mushrooms.
  • mclancy10006 commented:

9/24/15, 5:22 PM - So what made this a 75 if the 'same' wine not VV was an 88? Was the bottle flawed or something?

Charleston III - the Weekend; 9/18/2014-9/20/2014 (Charleston SC - various locations incl. Red Drum, Halls, Circa 1886, and Kings Courtyard Inn): Popped and poured. Good smokey flavor, great pepper. There's a very unique taste to this that I can't quite put my finger on. It's prob linked to the Viognier in the mix. Maybe a balsamic? Very interesting. First experience with a La-La and it's tasty stuff.
  • mclancy10006 commented:

9/20/14, 11:01 AM - I suspect that is the Viognier which given the line up of 100% syrahs last night is probably the "je'nesais quoi" of which you speak.

I don't know the percentage for this vintage but is often 7%

Wondering what has happened to this wine. Progressively less appealing each time I open one. 4 years ago this was drinking so nicely, understood the scores it earned. Now, near awful and that was despite giving it 7 hours in a decanter to open after being poured through a vinturi aerator. Battle between alcohol and pepper - heat for dominance. Both won, wine awful.

Had some good wine friends over for grilled steaks. I opened this early to drink alongside another powerhouse, 07 Bionic Frog. Frog ran away with the WOTN, this was so peppery and hot, smelled and tasted so much of alcohol that none of us finished each of the any small pours we tried. Still have over half a bottle pumped and in the cellar to try again today.

Not sure whether to find a new home for the remaining bottles or give it another few years to come around.
  • mclancy10006 commented:

6/22/14, 8:56 AM - Had the same bottle and it was a "hot mess". Not like other Reva's I have had but the 16.x% Alc was too dominate for me

2/17/13, 7:31 PM - Glad you like it. Tasty zin when it is drinking well can be great, but you might want to think on your scoring approach for this one a bit more. It might be helpful to be a bit more critical on the wine before throwing out a perfection score.

Some ideas here on how to approach tasting. http://www.winespectator.com/webfeature/show/id/47792

COLOR: Deep garnet with a brick-garnet rim
NOTE: Color betrays its age. Got this bottle from WineBid, so I can't attest to the provenance. My experience is much less delightful than the last dozen notes, so perhaps this is an abused bottle. Cork was fine and labeling/capsule was in great shape, but initial and subsequent nose was that familiar "Bordeaux-served-in-a-dirty-ashtray" complemented by pepperoni. Yuck. Some hints of red fruits barely peek through. The mouth actually starts with some nice, medium-opulence raspberry liqueur but then quickly fades back to the ashtray, and the opulence disappears in the finish and all my left with is ashtray. This is the oldest QC Cab I've had, so perhaps the style was different back then? I'm hesitant to call this flawed because so many tasters here like this kind of crap in their wines. Not me. Very disappointing since I paid relatively big bones for this one.
