5/16/24, 12:16 AM - Yes, it should show some age but not oxidation at this point. But it can happpen. I also see regulatly bottle vatiations from Clos de Goisses and other high end vintage champagnes in my cellar.
5/11/24, 1:15 AM - Thanks for your encouragement and of course all the best on your wine journey. We all learn from each other.
5/1/24, 12:03 PM - Indeed a bit confusing, As mentioned in the text, the merchant tasting was on the 2021 vintage, but Bonneau du Martray showed its 2020, don't ask me why :-)
4/20/24, 5:07 AM - haha, good one!
4/17/24, 9:26 AM - So sad, especially in 2017, a time where you think they should have this under control with Diam etc. Love Boillot otherwise. Glad to hear the other bottle worked out.
4/10/24, 10:57 PM - indeed, same here. Cheers!
4/9/24, 10:19 PM - In general the Village 2022 are juicy and approachable like the 2015 were in their youth, so from that aspect you can drink them. I personally prefer a few years of bottle age even with the village to let some attractive tertiary notes appear.
4/7/24, 1:23 AM - Excellent tasting note, I can feel the passion!
3/31/24, 9:01 AM - Love it, I can feel the passion. Keep exploring to find the 100. It will come!
3/24/24, 5:04 AM - Any notes on the wine itself?
3/24/24, 4:24 AM - Fully agree on your assessment of the Team Eugenie skills vs. the ones of Rene Engel.
3/15/24, 9:58 AM - Beim Les Haux wurde der 2021er gezeigt.
3/12/24, 1:43 PM - I gave the 2008 97pt. This 2013 is also likely to go up. As a rule of thumb, I would not drink high quality vintage Champagne before at least 15 years after the harvest. So the 2013 should hit its prime towards 2030.
3/12/24, 12:37 AM - Yes, that is right. Chateau Latour is doing what all well known Grand Cru Chateau actually should be doing as they are all very cash rich: Release their "Grand Vin" after ca 8-10 years because before that, it is an unfinished product and barely drinkable. In my view it actually hirts the brand if you shell out 500$+ and the wine is not great. Chateau Latour had the vision to move to a late release regime. Champagne has been doing it as well with great success, Rayas, Vega Sicilia, etc. are doing it as well. But it takes strategic vision and courage and if you optimize for short term cash than it is very difficult to move from the unsuitable "give me money quickly" en Primeur system to a release when the wines are ready. Latour does not have a fix schedule, though the release windows have been in the 7-10 year range. I heard from Frederic Engerer that they are considering to release the 2017 before the 2016 for example because the great 2016 vintage needs more time. BTW, if you like Latour, try to find a well aged Chateau Montrose or Leoville Las Cases from 1989, 1990 or 1996. In my view it is a wine that is aromatically and structurally closest to Chateau Latour at a lower price point.
3/12/24, 1:40 PM - Yes, Latour is really like those two wines. Masculine, tannic. More Dunn than Phelps in Napa terms. Lafite is more elegant. May be try vintage 2003 in your case.
3/9/24, 10:51 AM - indeed, thanks for spotting the typo.
3/9/24, 8:35 AM - Indeed, very different than normal blended Rosés. Enjoy!
3/8/24, 2:16 AM - Indeed, well summarized.
3/6/24, 12:44 PM - Agree, thanks for adding these details and context.
3/3/24, 6:26 PM - It has been drinking well now for some time but can surely keep. I typically see the ideal window between 20-30 years with bottles like this.
2/27/24, 10:25 PM - Well done, and a very different price back then :-)
2/24/24, 8:55 AM - Turned what?
2/19/24, 11:57 PM - Indeed, this was for the longest time the cheapest Grands Echezeaux. Only recently the market has realized this oddity and it doubled since.
2/18/24, 7:48 AM - The point here is that both wines are actually in the inexpensive category. You can always save a night with Lafite, DRC, Ferrari or Hèrmes. The issue at hand here is not price or quality but the so called "commercial wines" avoid of aroma and character. Made in an industrialized way, smells like grape juice with alcohol. That is the real pity, too many of these wines. Why would you drink that at 800 kcal/liter, twice as much as Coke. It is not only an issue at the very bottom with Jacobs Creek and Yellow tail but goes all the way up to the infamous Bolgheri blends.
2/14/24, 6:11 AM - Thanks for pointing out. LLM showed the 2020 wines in this tastting. I will make a note of that.
2/5/24, 12:08 AM - You are right, thanks for spotting. I corrected it.
1/31/24, 11:21 AM - Race? at more than 5x the price :-) Not even two BdB either...
1/28/24, 4:09 AM - Thanks for the comment. Sounds like it was not a one off then. Too bad, I love this wine when it is fresh.
1/22/24, 5:37 AM - LOL, funny review., love the comparison.
1/17/24, 2:59 AM - Oh, thanks for the hint. I have to look closer on my next bottle.
12/24/23, 7:18 AM - Thanks for the comparison, I always like tasting notes where wines are put in context/comparison.
12/22/23, 12:03 AM - Oh yes it was indeed. Thanks for pointing out. I made the correction.
12/12/23, 11:09 AM - Usually Jeros are slower, but if you have a 2000 in normal bottle, I would try it now. LLC has typically drinking window starting at 20 years of age.
12/12/23, 11:36 AM - Indeed, LLC is frustrating that way. I recall my waiting struggle with the 1988, and agree, 1996 is really a slow mover as well.
12/6/23, 12:44 AM - Great to hear, thanks for the comment.
12/3/23, 12:03 AM - Thanks for the comment, I did not know that he already did a pre 2000 vintage. Indeed, these were truly amazing dinners and times in HKG, all pre-covid before the place went into lock down mania and never really recovered from it until today.
12/3/23, 10:57 AM - Agree. it is a slippery slope. I also prefer it to be separate. You can be either at a top quality level, but may be not both together. For example Lucien Le Moine, Bernstein and Pacalet have positioned themselves successfully as a "high end Negoce" and their wines are good and found a following. But being both together mostly leads to brand confusion/dilution. My favorite wine of Fourrier if I take QPR into account is the Gevrey Combe aux Moines.
12/2/23, 3:55 AM - Any score or tasting note on the wine itself?
11/29/23, 7:20 AM - Any rating or a tasting note on the wine itself?
11/22/23, 10:20 AM - anything on the wine itself or a score?
11/19/23, 10:28 AM - Indeed, the leanest wine I had so far from this producer
11/5/23, 6:10 AM - Somehow I feel the comment and the note don't really match. Could it be you wanted to give 89 points?
10/12/23, 9:29 AM - Yes, it was in a very good spot, although it was one of many wines I had that day at the Paulée and did not make detailed notes.
9/5/23, 12:19 AM - agree, I also find l'Arlot a cut above and attractively priced. Indeed the 2012 vintage is generally considered the better vintage than the 2014 in red Burgundy, also from my experience.
8/25/23, 1:01 PM - yes, a sad wine, especially since the very Palmers are all elegant wines with very good drinkability. Better buy a few of those.
8/25/23, 1:07 PM - For me definitely a sale unless you want to try a bottle for personal curiosity and education.
8/21/23, 1:51 PM - Oh, good catch, thanks etyc. Yes they were all from 2009.
8/16/23, 9:33 AM - I just checked in my cellar. The 2018, 2019 and 2020, all have 14.5% Alc which is shockingly high but you dont feel it in this wine. It is racy, flinty and fresh. Quite a surprize as I dont like heavy wines and I usually run away from 14.5% Chards and Pinots.
8/16/23, 12:16 AM - Thanks for the TN, heard good things about this BdN, need to try. BTW, it is not the absence of Chard that gives freshness, as a matter of fact, Chard brings more freshness to blends than PN. PN gives body and spice notes. I think the freshness here must come from good quality PN grapes and well judged dosage.
7/15/23, 12:10 PM - Wow, a very grand line up of the best Latour vintages. I can feel the excitement and passion in the notes. Thanks for sharing.
7/10/23, 9:41 AM - Cool, hab ein paar davon im Keller.
6/21/23, 6:42 PM - good move!
6/8/23, 5:26 PM - Thanks MC2 for this excellent tasting story and the plethora of informative notes. I hope I will find the time to attend this event next year. Santé!
