2014 Antonio Vallana e Figlio Gattinara Nebbiolo
Gorgeous and incredible QPR. Garnet core with lots of orange highlights. Nose is not super expressive yet, but shows tart cherry, some light leather, dried roses and lavender, menthol, and mountain herbs. The wine has medium body, high+ acidity, high+ tannin and a very long, fresh finish. The palate has loads of tart cherry, bursting florals, light leather, menthol, dried herbs, and a hint of baking spice - there is really tremendous depth here and I feel like I’m barely scratching the surface. The wine shows a lot of development already but the tannins and acidity are still roaring, this must have decades left in it. I’ll be seeking out more!

2021 Domaine Oudin Chablis Chardonnay
so fresh and lifted on the nose, crushed oyster shells, salty sea air, a little grilled corn and nutty lees, plus gorgeous fresh fruit, apple, crisp pear, lemon.... crisp fresh fruit on the palate, buried chalky and salty nuance, medium-bodied and subtly silky, super classic, very very Chablis and hooray for that

2020 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Nebbiolo Langhe Langhe DOC
No bruiser of a Langhe Nebbiolo, the 2020 Burlotto showcases the lifted, bright shade to the grape. It has structure and depth and intensity, but it’s nuanced and quiet about it. The robe is bright garnet to the rim. The nose offers a sparkling array of forest berry (high bush cranberry and salmon berry come to mind), blackberry blossom, and subtle, cooling wintergreen aromas, with just a whisper or tar and (wild) roses. The palate is similarly filigreed, with red fruit and fine-grained structure seemingly acting as a top-note, rather than serving as a foundation with the fruit taking up the rear. But there’s excellent drive and fine length here and far from seeming insubstantial, this has the high kicking athleticism of a ballerina, as opposed to a more brooding strength. There is likely more here that will be revealed on day two, but it’s pairing admirably with a pan-roasted veal chop with black trumpet mushrooms and braised broccoli. Delicious, though based on this bottle after a short decant, I’d peg it as Alto Piemonte rather than good ole Langhe. Not that it suffers for its liveliness—it’s absolutely delicious. Re-buy.

Boxing Day Lunch at Home with Friends (Our House, Hong Kong): Decanted for 2 hours then drank over the next three. Colour is totally transparent brick-red but no visual hint of tiredness. Initially reticent nose that you have to chase at first so you need to give this time to breathe and it was at its best after 3 hours....spice, beef broth, Japanese sea urchin, umami...very savoury and complex. Palate is fresh, bright tangy cranberry on entry that segues into savoury, umami-driven multi-layered complexity. So velvety but diaphanously light as it opens in the glass. Ultimately unfolds to delicate, feminine, ethereal, will o' the wisp diaphanous layers.....really multi-dimensional. WOW! Thunderous, rumbling bass notes of endless resonance and reverberance inside the head on the finish. Silence creating...which is my highest compliment for a wine. I paid a $300 premium for this bottle at a charity auction but both the charity and I got our money's worth.

A perfectly acceptable wine to drink with friends but this has seen brighter times in it’s life. This beginning to……faded beauty as it’s edge color is pulling away and is also turning a brick color. The GSM, blend is quit integrated and soft. Nose of plum and faded menthol.

7/21/21, 1:34 AM - It was kept in a retail store for two years versus a 55 degree cellar. That may have made the difference. I would try one. You never know. I am a huge Rhone Ranger fan and have been drinking Alban’s for years and this was no John Alban clone Syrah in this bottle!

Clean, fresh, apple, tropical fruits on nose. A little more residual sugar than expected on the palate. This wine is typically an ager, but I have no idea how it will survive for long in my cellar...

Decanted for two hours (after a battle with an incredibly crumbly cork, surprised to see this happen given the wax seal). Could have used even more time, although it's not clear whether this one will ever fully resolve. In the glass, dark opaque indigo. On the nose, a fruit-forward blast of plums, blackberries, and tapenade. On the palate, silky blue fruit with a touch of oak on the attack, with significant but not biting tannins on the long finish. This wine demands bold food; we had it with steak and a tangy chimichurri sauce.

OK, so I was reading your tasting notes and was wondering why you decanted a seven year old bottle of Cali Syrah from Pax. I have one more bottle left and would love to open it with you at my home. Are you ever in Greenwich, CT? I have Magnums of Pangea! Bring your wife and lets do dinner!
