3/8/23, 7:36 PM - 100% agree with what Mike has done with the entry level (Napa) cabs in 2020. Quivet, Myriad and Becklyn. The Quivet is probably our favorite. Hard to keep from popping them.
9/1/22, 11:05 AM - That is correct - 750s went live today. I drank this mag back in mid-June for my daughter's birthday (2019 baby). Sacrificed an infant, but it was great! Today's release reminded me to post a note.
9/1/22, 12:15 PM - NikRut - easy buy for me. Love Rutherford, love Aaron Pott, and love Rob Greer and his story. Great guy if you get a chance to meet him.Blarmston - I hear ya, but would not be at all surprised if Rob would allocate you some if you shoot him an email. Had an issue a couple of years ago, and he could not have been nicer about making it right.
6/7/22, 11:29 AM - I have indeed. I buy this wine every vintage; consistent performer and solid value on this juice. Can heartily endorse. Especially if you liked Ancillary. This label is probably even a tick better.
8/16/21, 3:58 PM - @MJP yep - spend is clearly relevant here. Given the crazy prices SC commands on secondary, the direct comparison to Greer makes it hard to justify. I love SC - easily one of my top 3 wines - but chasing it on auction, etc. as compared to Greer is pretty wild based on this direct comparison. All that said, I love both these wines and will continue to buy both direct as much as I can.
8/17/21, 3:06 PM - @MJP absolutely - look forward to making it happen!@LiteItOnFire - have had several Greers as well as the Pott Arsenal (back when he had this vineyard under his label), and never a disappointment. But this was the first H2H of the same vintage - well played by the Greer. Special stuff!
8/18/21, 7:46 AM - @gymnastpro I would say yes, the '15 is more open than the '16 right now (although it has been a few months since I popped a '16 Greer)
8/16/21, 3:53 PM - @MJP this was a spectacular wine -- no rush, but also no hesitation if inclined to pop in the near future!
6/17/21, 8:47 PM - Was not able to decent. More or less a pop and pour. Came around quite nicely.
5/4/21, 10:02 AM - It was super. Glad we took an early peek. Well refined even in its infancy.
4/12/21, 10:28 AM - Very cool place to visit - certainly recommend. The 341 certainly stood out to us although plenty of good juice to taste. It does seem to be a fluid situation, as vintages seem to spin-off various different wines. Sometimes hard to keep up with.I have not tried any of their most recent vintages - hope to get back out to Napa this Spring/Summer and hope to make a visit.
2/1/21, 9:29 AM - I love the Dr. Crane vineyard and the various wines that come out of it. I certainly have high hopes for this one, but will be patient based on this experience and other notes . . .
1/11/21, 9:12 PM - I love this wine (and vineyard) and always have high hopes when we pop one from any vintage. All that being said, this bottle exceeded even our lofty expectations. Would give one a rip if you have handy. Cheers.
8/7/19, 8:13 AM - With Schraders, including the To Kalons, I find the tannin management to always be impeccable. The RBS in particular for me typically has the most revined tannins when young. I wouldn't be too scared to pop one of these in the near future if you enjoy full throttle Napa cabs - tannins should not be harsh. Cheers.
1/2/21, 7:31 AM - Hi Dave. I have not pulled a 2016 yet, but seems like it would be a good idea to take a peek in the near future!
1/4/21, 7:25 AM - Good stuff Dave. Also a big fan of the Memento Mori - and most everything else Sam Kaplan makes. I moved on from Nine Suns when he quit making that wine. But for now sticking with Schrader given that TRB is still making the wines, grapes still coming from Beckstoffer vineyards, etc. Hopefully nothing changes any time soon, but who knows.
12/14/20, 10:26 PM - I have not cracked a 2018 M Etain yet, but would echo the sentiments on the 2018 Bard. That wine was such a rockstar to me (particularly from a value perspective, if there is such a thing on a wine north of $100) in earlier vintages, but I feel like they lost some of the magic when they expanded production and vineyard sources. But my first visit on a 2018 Bard was excellent.
12/14/20, 7:50 AM - Thanks. We were actually fairly disappointed with the Vangone. Game across more syrupy purple fruited, and nowhere near the balance on the back end. We left the majority of the Vangone for Night 2 and didn't note any meaningful improvement. Will probably forget about those for a while and see what they might develop into.
12/14/20, 7:58 AM - Agreed - me too!
10/16/20, 7:18 AM - Cheers. We don't drink a ton of Bordeaux and this is the first bottle of Clinet I've had at home (had an older vintage at a restaurant a couple of years ago). Very impressed; not sure if it's just the vintage, but will buy more if I can find it for around $100.
11/10/20, 9:56 PM - Heh - Collector 1855, indeed a gut punch! Hope you enjoyed it while you could!
11/9/20, 9:05 AM - heh - yep, 2018's have already hit my wallet pretty hard and I'm sure will continue to do so . . . .
10/2/20, 4:46 PM - Honestly it probably will. I am so used to drinking these guys within 12-18 months .... this vintage may just need time.
10/5/20, 3:42 PM - Thanks for the note TMOVino. I have yet to get into other 2018 Napa cabs. Certainly hear that there is lots of structure. I will say, even the 2016 Teeter Totter was approachable off the truck for us, even though that has seemed to also proven itself a well structured vintage. So maybe that's my best comparison point; the 2016 Teeter Totter was (as typical) approachable early, but the 2018 isn't in the same category for us. We've popped a few and had pretty consistent thoughts . . . will likely try to forget about the rest of them for a couple of years. We're just so used to plowing through these early!! Take care.
9/14/20, 8:09 PM - Yeah this is a delicious wine. I know it was a tough vintage for some but this is a great wine by any measure. Maybe don’t cellar forever, but I expect it will be excellent through 2037. Which I find strange to type .....
8/21/20, 7:01 AM - Hi Ray. I don't have a ton of experience with this particular wine. I have had a few vintages in the 2008-2012 range, but don't believe I've had a 2013. I do love a good Syrah though. As you likely know, 2013 was a drought year in Napa that produced a lot of big scoring and age-worthy wines. I have not had a big Syrah from the vintage recently, but have been enjoying some of the cabs (generally after giving them an hour or two to decant).First off, I think Carne Asada would be a fantastic pairing for this wine. That said, I think it's going to be in a more mature drinking window in another couple of years. And expect it to stay in a great window for several more years. They seem to really make this wine with staying power, and 2013 is a great vintage for laying down. But you noted enjoying the spice on the finish . . . so that may very well fade a bit with time (and make this a better candidate for you to go ahead and pop).If you do decide to proceed, I would try to get the restaurant to splash decant it if at all possible. If not, I'm sure you'll still enjoy it . . . may just need some time in the glass to unwind! Look forward to hearing about the results.
7/31/20, 4:21 PM - I would recommend giving one a rip in the near term with a couple of hours decant. It was incredibly good. Will no doubt be lovely in the future; but sure fun to drink right now.
7/30/20, 2:46 PM - Yes, LOVE Greer. Great vineyard and amazing winemaker - and neighbor to Scarecrow. Actually got introduced to it back when Aaron Pott was making some Arsenal in his lineup; that ended in 2013. Have been buying the "original" Greer ever since. Phenomenal!!
7/30/20, 2:53 PM - Right on - I haven't met Rob in person yet, but hope to next trip to Napa. We were scheduled to be there in late April, but that obviously got cancelled. Virtual interactions with him (and anecdotal evidence from multiple sources) suggest he is an incredible individual.
6/23/20, 1:42 PM - Great night indeed! Did not decant any of these guys - but did slow ox for about 4 hours. Finished it off on Day 1 within a couple hours after we dove in.
6/23/20, 7:28 PM - Nice. Let us know how it goes!!
6/2/20, 6:59 AM - I've found high-end 2017s from Napa to be largely very nice. Would not write off the vintage in any respect.I tend to buy 2-3 bottles of each vineyard of Carter, and almost always pop one in the first 12 months after receiving. Usually very fun stuff. This one was on the tight side and needs to rest or get loads of air. Still highly enjoyable.
5/6/20, 5:53 PM - Great note. Think we have pretty similar tastes. I have 3 bottles. When do you think it's worth sacrificing the first? Near future, or a couple more years?
5/6/20, 7:02 PM - Right on - I am very similar and like to take a peek at things early. "like asking the Devil if you should run a stop sign... " is something I greatly appreciate and readily admit that I will re-use!My guess is that I will pop one for our baby girl's first birthday in about 6 weeks - June 19. We popped a 2011 Promontory for her elder sister's first birthday (January 2017) so seems appropriate!
5/8/20, 3:28 PM - Amen - putting a pretty strong dent in the cellar with the girls at home all day every day . . . .
3/31/20, 3:33 PM - Amen to that! I am putting a strong dent in my cellar . . . only way to cope with this stuff. We were planning to go to Napa in late April; obviously that trip ain't happening. Was hoping to try and arrange for a meeting with Rob. Will have to do that another time! Cheers
3/27/20, 7:24 AM - Agreed. This wine is plenty nice. Also had a 2017 Carter OG a couple of nights ago. Mike didn't miss a beat with that one either.
3/16/20, 1:03 PM - Great note. I love Rive Droite too - but this is a doozy. Would also suggest the Carter Hossfeld Coliseum - which I believe is typically 80% merlot.
3/16/20, 12:28 PM - Great note and cool comparison with the Greer. Agree that the label name/message is spot on given current circumstances!! You have inspired me to pop one this week.
3/16/20, 12:24 PM - You think this guy is ready? Or need more time? Seems like this is the R-M cab requiring the most patience. Great note - who doesn't love a rib roast! Cheers.
2/29/20, 7:58 AM - Thanks City Squirrel. I am taking my 2017 allocation - 3 pack, plus a mag. The price jump on the mag is hard to swallow, but this is truly one of my top 2-3 wines year after year, and my absolute favorite in Rutherford. That said, even I couldn't justify the crazy price tag on the 3L ($5,000)! You could buy a whole case of the 750s at list price for that!!
11/1/19, 2:21 PM - Sounds pretty lovely. What type of air time do you think would be ideal for opening in the next month or two? I see you let it get 3-5 hours of air - that about right? Appreciate you popping for experimental purposes. Cheers.
9/11/19, 6:41 PM - We poured into a duck decanter. I would give it an hour or two to breathe in that setting. Cheers
9/10/19, 8:10 AM - Yep, I think it needs a little time to breathe, but then right on point! Tasty stuff.
6/7/19, 12:55 AM - Thanks for the kind words. This wasn't bad at all, just not a rockstar like I was hoping.
4/23/19, 3:33 PM - Cheers blarmston - no doubt
4/24/19, 1:29 PM - Thanks Laz4wine - certainly will
3/27/19, 9:00 AM - Cristal2000 yeah, I'm not sure how you can say this rates similarly to the other Realm wines at this point. Even the other blends. Next time I pop one of these, I will probably also pop a Falstaff or Tempest for a direct comparison. Cheers.
3/27/19, 9:10 AM - Yeah I know these are great vineyard sources and the team is fantastic - just seems like maybe there are too many things going into this mix and it's not coming together just right? Maybe time will improve? I'm not so sure. But at this point, may pull back on how much Bard I purchase in future vintages.
12/27/18, 7:25 PM - Yep - good times. I think I was guessing the 2016 would be better, but I was not alone in giving the 2015 the edge. That may be short lived, but it's splitting hairs. Good problem to have!
12/28/18, 8:36 PM - The Bevan was very nice and seamless - the Carters just came over the top with power, darker core of fruit, more push on the back of the palate and a longer finish. The Bevan had dark purple fruit, and more herbaceous hints on the palate. But then you follow with one of the Carters and it just snowplows through with energy to spare. We were aligned with this phenomenon amongst three tasters - the Bevan on most any night is great, but the Carter OG is a special beast.
11/26/18, 7:48 AM - Agreed. Love what he does here, and also next door at Dr. Crane. Cheers!
11/24/18, 1:01 PM - Cheers to happy accidents!
11/5/18, 12:20 PM - One of those wines that can't help but make you smile!
10/23/18, 2:43 PM - I think that is where I ultimately come out on this wine - I like it, but the R-M Napa valley for around $20 less is generally a better wine. And for me, certainly a better value.
10/23/18, 2:52 PM - Amen. Certainly very nice company in your tasting. And I agree on the petite Syrah! Such a cool wine. That is the “must buy” wine for me on the MW lineup.
8/28/18, 2:17 PM - Nice one. Happy birthday to you.
8/20/18, 8:39 AM - Looks like a great tasting. I'm not familiar with Sage Canyon - first time Russell has made this? Any further background on it? Appreciate it.
8/21/18, 9:46 AM - No doubt - look forward to the inevitable video! Sounds like you thought the Houyi and Sage Canyon generally "stacked up" to the other Bevan cabs?
8/20/18, 8:21 AM - Looks like this was lovely - any time a sparkler tops Krug, you must be drinking something good. I have to confess I'm not familiar with this label - any suggestions on a particular one to pick up and try? Looks like this 2010 was excellent, but maybe tough to find. Cheers.
8/20/18, 9:46 AM - Thanks much - very helpful. Will have to see if any of my wine nerd pals has some of this and wants to share!
8/4/18, 11:22 AM - Great wine and great note. Just had a 2013 Fait Main from LPV last night and it was off the charts good. Such an amazing vineyard
8/6/18, 8:40 AM - Thanks. I actually tried a vertical of Nomad a while back -- 06, 07 and 08 vintages. We really enjoyed them and would be interested to see how they are performing in recent (12, 13, 14) vintages.
8/7/18, 7:45 AM - Nice. I will have to see if I can track some down on the secondary market and give one a shot.
8/4/18, 11:31 AM - Love the note - just curious as to your thoughts on aging the single vineyard RM pinots? Will seems a big proponent of letting them sleep for a few years, especially the Summas, but I frankly don’t have enough experience with older vintages to have a good opinion base. I love the wines and always take a peek at bottles early, but have tried to keep most bottles from 13-16 stashed away for future drinking. Thanks
8/6/18, 8:42 AM - I have similarly not seen a lot of change/success with decanting these guys. I love them and happily buy my allocations, just trying to hone in on the best drinking windows/treatment. Take care.
8/4/18, 11:41 AM - Great note. I have just one bottle of this. What are your thoughts on aging? Pop soon or hang on for a while? Cheers.
8/6/18, 8:40 AM - Much appreciated
8/4/18, 11:27 AM - Nice comparison. I often find the three twins pretty wound up in youth. Imagine you have already seen, but found it very interesting that Jeb scored the 2016 Dr Crane and Georges III “regular” bottlings higher than Elysian/Empyrean. Guess it’s always different strokes for different folks. Can’t wait to try them for myself.
7/31/18, 1:24 PM - Easily one of my favorite whites to enjoy on hot Texas summer days.
6/22/18, 9:24 AM - yeah, that's what I understood re: yields and split between Scarecrow and M Etain. I usually get allocated several bottles of M Etain each vintage, but only got 2 for 2015. Maybe that's a good thing. Just hope the Scarecrow is as excellent as I've come to expect. At least the "pro" ratings seem to support that it will be good.
6/22/18, 9:50 AM - Glad to hear it was at least good. I had a 2014 last summer and it was perfection. Probably going to give the 2015 more time - maybe another year or two before I pop one. Yeah, gun to my head and have to pick one wine, it's going to be Scarecrow for me. So always keep a close eye on it.
6/5/18, 8:41 AM - Cheers to many more!
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
