Semi-transparent dark garnet with rim variation of soft red raspberries, medium fast tears. Earthy plump juicy jammy leather cigar and tobacco perfumes; fresh earth. Thick, plump, moderately intense, anise and terroir elegant, firm, medium long plus finish, medium-full bodied. Pomerol tin metallic nose...Ceres is particularly sensitive to this metallic nose, this is the lead pencil most refer to but i find lead too soft a description for this.

Dark, opaque burgundy no perception of rim variation. The perfume is dusty at first with lead pencil, library, dusty books, leather, mushroom fresh earth, tobacco and cigar. FIrst flavor in the mouth is licorice, fennel, dark dried black cherries, cloves and baking spices but soft spice. Gorgeously balanced with acidity and tannin both medium plus. Finish is medium-long with soft quiet smokey deliciousness. After an hour the sweetish licorice emerges after two hours the sweetness predominates. Bacchus rates this as a 94 Ceres 93.

We like it, do not love. Simple, little on the nose. Leather, purple fruits, dry tannins. Medium short finish. Great social drinking. Do not build a dinner around it. Drink up over the next 3-5 years. Maybe its the gravel but this terroir does not appear to be able to ever make a great wine.

7/21/2018 - Bacchus&Ceres Likes this wine:
91 points
Beautiful deep red garnet with shiny semi-translucency, red raspberry just at the edge. Nose is very clean and dominated by caramel creamy toasted spiced American oak Powerful at first pour with gradual release of youthful intensity, fruit is there but in the mouth not the nose, yet this fragrance is intoxicating in its balanced exotics, intriguing and magnetic. on the palette, dark jammy black raspoberry, black currant, spice (juniper, bitter acidic) white pepper, very feminine, floral, soft, round, medium finsih, very complex, perhaps a bit too much we think due to petit verdot and malbec combo. Still very well crafted. Cheers. Great quaffing all by itself with appetizers of filet of beef with cream cheese chive garlic on toasties.

Ceres thinks this wine is quite delicious Bacchus more skeptical and finds it confused but gives a 90ish
Bacchus expresses desire to taste in 2-3 years and or the essence of petit verdot overly contributing and responsible for the floral violet aromatic notes that trample upon the Cab rendering an out of balance for Bacchus's liking.

Silky elegance; words cannot do this wine justice. Ethereal and sublime.
Tasted next to 1982 Ch. Cheval Blanc which definitely had softer more feminine armature, curvilinear but this lady adored and preferred the '82 over it if only by a nose...at the finish. How lucky to have experienced these glorious liquids of the Gods. Both close to God,Cheers. The Old Inn on the Green hot summer night. had with appetizer of seared scallop+lobster with mushroom puree and a duck breast with chanterelles.

Bright, shiny, crystalline transparent garnet of homogeneous color and beauty, nose clean, fresh, violet floral notes initially that transform into fruity metallics later, tears of fast moving medium viscosity, streaming, mouth of fresh plum and cassis, quiet and subtle spice, tannins and American oak notes of honeyed toasted bark, clean bright refreshing finish, medium + body, terrific balance in acidic and quiet tannin hint of cleansing bitters, nothing gripping yet structurally sound. A beautiful wine thoroughly enjoyable on its own. An honorable testament to Joe Heitz. Well done. Will compare tonight in a vertical against the 1998 Martha's Vineyard...We love this wine! Peaking now drink up in the year ahead.

Dark garnet opaque fast thin near sheet like tears. Very subtle aromatics, nose hidden, veiled, fresh green coffee beans. Mouth fabulous concentrated on all fronts: acid, alcohol, tannin, fruit—flexing muscle still. Bit drying, medium finish spicy peppery and whirling flamenco skirt; soft embracing tannins; a Spanish seductress. Enchanting. Past peak do not hold any longer like her up now.

Deep opaque purple. Long thick slow moving tears. Baking spice, warm earthy caramel, toasted cedar. Rich jammy black fruits full bodied, medium + alcohol & tannin, medium acidity; gripping sticky tar, easy semi-sweet, delicious. Long finish, needs tremendous time to open: this note 24 hours after bottle opened; tight and unyielding, vacuumed for another day. Today another wine altogether; nice to meet you.

Dark garnet semi-opaque, slight rim variation into dark raspberry, no legs lacking precociousness. Nose if stewed fruit brown plum disappointing aged lacking cleanliness, thin prune baking spice, out of balance tannic grip poorly structured , crafted thin disappointing. Pale short finish lack-luster. Let’s try holding on to rest of case for 4-5 years and see if this wine has a second bloom down the road. Could it be a case closing down down righting up 39 years in, only to re-emerge as a beautiful flower later? Plenty of tannin there, we’ll see...50:50

First of all: gorgeous wine.
Black raspberry deep purple rim variation into ruby. Thin medium+ fast tears sheet like without color. Nose of spice box married to black jam, blackberry incredible balance and medium bodied femininity, circumventing syrupy thickness; reaching perfection. Powerful, like Athena or Diana of the Hunt, muscular & powerful but not A Herculean hammer: acid med, tannin med beautiful quiet warm wood, not caramel slightly sweet just enough with hints of licorice + candy store. Mouth filling encompassing integrated flavors, a jewel. Medium long finish : front middle back and end, glorious. Well-done, cheers vignerons!

Dark garnet bordering on purple, no rim variation. Aromatics a bit closed even after a 2 hour breathe after double decant. Dehydrating, collapsing in on itself, restraint, unpleasantly dry tough tannins. This is what I continued to come away with, must be a strange bottle comparatively to others comments on this wine, even with food and fat, I found this to be dessicating with very pale watery fruits. A harsh review for what i consider a classic Bordeaux, I still like the wine!

Garnet with orange rim variation, clean and shiny. Still healthy and strong after 2 hours decant. ARomatics of complex floral violets and baking spices with horse stable. Balanced and bright in mouth with acidic + freshness. After 45 additional minutes (almost 3 hours from decant) started to fall apart and flesh out flabby. Still a remarkably elegant and complex juice. Earth and stable signature classic of St. Julien.
