Went to Smart & Final of all places.. the “Cutrer” was discounted from $35 to $17.99…. Hmmm… what a deal…. Well NOT so much. This is similar to the same characteristic as their regular bottling with this being a Russian River Appelation. Not close to the SC bottlings I revered early in my career… to the point I don’t recognize It. Fruit if Any.. maybe caramelized pear is muddled with course tight grain toasted Oak with again a watery non existent finish. Those that called it Balanced are delusional .. elegant .. maybe in a Car Crash…and scoring it in the the 90’s is a 1990 Fantasy.
Please avoid this and don’t be fooled by the Name or the previous incarnations. A’s Pacino said in Scent of a woman “ All honor is Deeeaaad” Drinkable for a watery puckering glass … but I usually curse fruitless Wine. Good luck SC

7/14/23, 11:05 AM - Is it possible your bottle may have been flawed? An off bottle perhaps? I tasted my bottle in February, with like-minded tasters and it was the complete opposite of your description. Sincerely, Delusional.

7/14/23, 7:25 PM - Thanks for the reply. I've yet to have an issue with this producer but I do agree, wines from S&F can be sketchy. I've seen how they store their wines in 90 degree warehouses. Yikes!

Pop n pour over 3.5 hours. I'd take these faded reviews with a grain of salt, they may enjoy young robust cabs or milkshakes as I call them. This has aged so gracefully at 13.5%. For my palate in no stage of decline, plenty of fruit and in balance. Plum, pomegranate, cedar, mint and some leather fill out a lithe profile. Finish lingers, a classic Napa cab. Well stored bottles have room to run. Try my last bottle in 2-5 years.

Beautiful balance of soft spice on the nose, and this is reflected in the artfully constructed palate. The wine is not as deep as previous bottles I have had, and it lacked a little in structure. I do not know where awarding it 97 points (please see below) comes from. 93 I feel is about right,
  • Baron Slick commented:

5/22/23, 1:04 PM - I have a half case of this in my cellar and although I've yet top crack open a single bottle I thought I'd reply to your comment about the 97 point score from a previous user. The answer to your question is obvious: Taste is subjective. Or, maybe your bottle didn't show as well as the previous user's bottle. I've tasted the same wine and vintage days apart and rated the wine with vastly different scores. Anyway, I hope your next bottle is better than your 93 point score. Cheers.

After opening the bottle I tasted the wine and thought the wine was tainted. So i decanted it for about 35 mins, thinking it just needed to some sort to blow the mustiness off the wine.
Well the wine was overly acidic with an unpleasant tast. Maybe it needs more time in the bottle but i doubt it. I was highly disappointed
  • Baron Slick commented:

5/5/23, 6:24 PM - Sounds like this could possibly could have been a tainted bottle. Considering other users have rated this wine in the 90's would it be fair to designate this a flawed bottle rather than a score of 84?

Decanted an hour before dinner (lots of sediment) only to find plodding flavors drug down by heavy oak and low acid. We struggled thru a glass apiece and dumped the rest.
  • Baron Slick commented:

4/4/23, 10:33 AM - Out of curiosity, to the extent that the second bottle you had was delightful, and given that the rest of user's scores reflect the performance of your second bottle, would it be fair to mark this up as a flawed bottle in lieu of such a low score?

  • Baron Slick commented:

4/6/23, 6:49 PM - I appreciate the reply. Very informative; thank you. What a bummer. It's odd because I just opened one last night and it was in the 92-93 range. A pleasant wine. Has that youthful brightness and shows currants and mild tannins. A medium bodied quaff, not over oaked. Accessed by Coravin and let it breathe a bit. Certainly a short finish. All in all, what you ought to get for about $20 but so rarely do, especially from CA. A nice daily red.

This bottle had a touch of tca. Very mild, added an earthy note. The wine had spicey notes with red fruits, tannins that dissipated in an hour. Medium bodied , would be 89 points w/o tca. The tca was on the cork, immediately apparent upon opening.
  • Baron Slick commented:

3/10/21, 9:19 PM - Hi, to be fair, if the wine had enough TCA to negatively affect the score, shouldn't this be classified as a "Flawed" wine, rather than rating it a lower score, and thus affecting the overall CT rating? Or in the very least, leave it as No Rating (NR). Based on your TN, this was clearly a corked wine and thus Flawed. Thanks

This is nowhere near being ready, even with a 3+ hour decant, but it’s classic Napa Cabernet at its finest. Rich, plump, and luscious notes of black cherries, cassis, and tobacco are framed by soaring vinosity, sweet tannin, and tremendous fruit purity. But it’s the powerful structure and interminable length that reminds you this has decades of beautiful drinking pleasure ahead of it. Delicious but I wish I had waited another 5-7 years.

One of my ATF NV champagnes, this is typical Bolly. So rich, creamy, and layered, with impeccable focus, delineation, and structure. Ripe apples, loquats, and brioche aromas are juxtaposed by freshness and vibrancy on the palate, where preserved lemons and slivers of gravelly minerality are buoyed by a constant flow of pinprick bubbles. Finishes with length, complexity, and sheer deliciousness.

Being largely landlocked due to coronavirus, I was rummaging through my collection and discovered this bottle as a singleton. I can't remember exactly how I came to have it, but it was either a gift or I bought it at Costco (a long time ago) to check out and buy more if it was good. I did not buy more, not as a fault of the wine, but because I am too disorganized to have followed up "in a timely fashion" on the tryout.
The wine is dark purple, no sign of brown, so the flaw I mention below is not likely to be due to over-aging. Lots of classic Cabernet character, not too sweet (which I like), but flavors more on the mushroom, bramble, wood and earth end of the spectrum as opposed to the fruit end. There was a touch of isopropanol (rubbing alcohol - I know the smell well as I've been using a lot of it lately on my hands to kill corona...) on the finish, which is a flaw in my opinion, and which kept me from rating it higher. I would be interested if any other drinkers of this wine concur on this observation.
Cellartracker "where to buy" has listed this wine today at $46! I'm sure (assuming the Costco hypothesis above) that I did not pay anything near that. Definitely not worth $46. For $46 you can buy at least three nice Argentinian Malbecs or New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs.

  • Baron Slick commented:

12/8/19, 6:37 PM - I would agree with you. My understanding of orange wine is that the skins are not removed like in white wine production, and they contact the juice for days or weeks depending on the style. Having said that, the wine rep at the tasting promoted it as an orange wine, and the wine itself had a pretty orange hue. Taking all this into consideration is the reason I wrote "orange" wine in quotes because I was dubious. But this was good, no doubt.

So good year in and year out. The 2018 exhibits tremendous tension, precision, and aromatics and yet is elegantly polished and restrained for such a vibrant wine. Lychee, guava, and gooseberry notes are laced with a lick of salt while pithy lime peel complexity races past the crisp, juicy, and grassy finish.

6/26/19, 12:50 PM - I have no idea what you're talking about. I just re-read my TN for the 2017 vintage and it's completely different from the note I wrote for the 2018. Thanks for reading my notes.

2013 Grgich Hills Merlot Napa Valley
PnP - this bottle was gifted, so we decided to pop it open before dinner and definitely not my cup of tea. Clearly on the fruit bomb style of Napa wine and with Merlot, it this ripe style just becomes a flabby mess - no acid to keep it in check and hot gloppy, syrupy alcohol. Could not make it through one glass - dump and move along.

By the glass at the BA lounge, LHR. freshly opened bottle.
Soft, welcoming and does exactly what it says on the tin. Welcoming and well made rose, soft red fruits, doesn't challenge one much but allows for happy drinking. Solid 88

Let's not forget The Papies rules for ultimate rose experience. Proximity to beach required, Must be from a large bottle ( 3L plus) one must overpay the wine and bonus feature if the wine is served by someone wearing white.

By the glass. Another Gavi that "drifts" towards the tropical side instead of making the notes of candied lemon, dry hay and a mineral background. Pity. A lot of density in the mouth, a lot of acidity and a lot of final abundance. It needs years to be really enjoyed.

Dry, effervescent, and long, this shows a salmon orange appearance and brims with peach, lime, and white raspberry aromas over notes of yeast, biscuits, and cream. Complex, structured and layered, and very full in the mouth. Sports a tiny, active bead, creamy mouthfeel, juicy acidity, and cherries on the vigorous finish. Lovely.

Decent, but not much more than that. Then again, it was only $10.

Red
2015 Telmo Rodríguez Toro Dehesa Gago Tinta de Toro, Tempranillo
Criticising the supposed shortcomings of a seven-euro wine is easier than highlighting its virtues for what it really is.
Aromas of hawthorn flower, pastry and a earthy sensation. At this level, it can be considered deep. A classic, serious and masculine red, clear representative of its appellation. Flavours of Chinese ink or blue flowers. It has an acute acidity that is concentrated in the center of the palate and that clearly stands out at the end giving to the wine some persistence. Well-integrated alcohol. Rusticity has softened over the years. Heavy no more. Better serve it with food and something chilled (14 C). It is very clear that this is not the worst wine of mister Rodriguez. Maybe just one of the cheapest.
By the way, spending argon gas for a bottle like this is a waste of time and probably of money.
May I insist? Toro is not for everyone. IMHO separates men from brats.

Flavorsome wine. It boasts enticing aromas of lychees, gooseberries, hay, and a touch of rambutan. It’s crisp, racy, and bone dry, with agreeable weight and vinosity to the juicy lime and green apricot flavors. Wet stones and lime zest invigorate the finish. Sancerre done right.

5/2/19, 6:25 PM - That's so cool. It's funny because we are accustomed to picking up whatever foods we are exposed to, whether it be here or halfway across the world. I grew up in southern California and we had a loquat tree in the back yard. Lo and behold I smell and taste loquats in a lot of champagnes I drink. It's not a descriptor you read about in wine but to me it's so obvious. Good to hear your story. Cheers!
