2/24/24, 8:30 AM - 60points on the CT scale is damn near undrinkable. That right?
2/24/24, 10:23 AM - Using the CT FAQ an average wine is 75. Below 70 is "avoid". Based on the note above I would have expected a rating in the 80's. It would be quite a fiasco for a classified growth bdx to release a wine that would score in the 60's on the CT scale (which is adapted from RP). I would argue a score in the 80's from a 2nd growth is very disappointing.I only posted because the note described an experience below expectations but a score that is generally not how the community scores winesI would agree that I tend to rate "average" wines ~85.
12/12/23, 8:13 PM - well, it was a bit better tonight, but I still think not quite the typical quality. The unpolished tannins seem a bit odd to me. This is generally a very tannic wine but not one this austere and angular.
12/9/23, 7:25 AM - I found this pretty enjoyable. But it was maybe 3oz sample in a 2hr tasting. so not a lot of time on it. Looks for a Jviz note soon. Same bottle
10/2/23, 3:23 AM - oops. Must have fat fingered it. thanks
6/16/23, 4:06 AM - Dude, did you look at how much old Bordeaux I drink? I would agree my note is pessimistic; Canon may have missed the mark in '05 but it's one of my favorites and generally ages well so we will see.
7/4/23, 5:50 AM - I've only had a few recent '05s but I would agree the right bank ones tend to be over extracted and over ripe. I am also concerned these will not age as well as hoped. Canon is usually restrained for St Emillion, but they may have missed the mark this vintage. We'll see. Hopefully just an off bottle
3/25/23, 1:54 PM - Thanks. Probably iphone finger flub.
1/25/23, 7:52 PM - I'm pretty tolerant of tannin--but this is near the limit of what's enjoyable. Definitely needs time. I think it has enough fruit to last. Pretty sure this is sourced from Mt Veeder (think I read that somewhere)
1/4/23, 2:16 PM - Thanks Roy. This was showing very well—you may recall it showed very well next to a ‘16 Macdonald last year! Unfortunately this was my last bottle—guess you’ll have to keep me posted on library release once I make some space.
12/19/22, 6:24 PM - Splash decanted. It’s more accessible than the other DiCo’s of same age but I wouldn’t call it “mature”. Perfectly enjoyable now though.
12/1/22, 7:44 PM - Yeah had that experience as well. But this was totally inappropriate for a young Nebbiolo. Didn’t come around.
9/6/22, 3:13 AM - Ha. Yes fixed
8/15/22, 4:52 AM - Yes 2hrs. Oak was rough first hour
8/1/22, 7:12 PM - This was friendlier than expected—missing the “firmness” of many ‘06’s but complexity doesn’t seem to be there
7/16/22, 7:22 PM - Well, not exactly. Nose was ok. But in the attack got a rather off putting cardboard note that seemed like TCA to me. Just enough I couldn’t drink the bottle, quite mild. I saw your note. I don’t think I had the same experience—having had many Myriad in the past have to think it was a flawed bottle. I’m pretty sensitive to heat/etoh and that seemed in check. Have another bottle of this wine to compare to as well.
4/18/22, 6:16 AM - It’s an expressive wine now but still has considerable structure to resolve. Just depends on how you like it. We had it with smoked pork ribs and it was perfect.
4/16/22, 8:54 PM - I guess you’re back!Maybe my favorite Carlisle bottling..
3/22/22, 6:38 PM - Fair enough
12/28/21, 10:22 AM - Potentially—but this was recent chateau release. Not sure if they have climate control??Color did have some bricking.
12/28/21, 10:46 AM - Well, I purchased directly from Importer so this is as good as it gets here. Don’t know the producer well enough to say with certainty—but this was a tired bottle. Might have guessed late 70s/early 80s blind. I have some more coming from another source as well.
10/18/21, 1:26 PM - I had most ofMine on day 2. But wife had it one day 1 and said it needed couple hours of air.
9/3/21, 5:19 AM - For me, when I say “structured” on Pinot I’m ususally referring to acidity and “firmness”. I didn’t get much oak influence on my last bottle and I’m usually sensitive to that. This is one that isn’t quite ready, IMHO
7/24/21, 6:07 AM - Double decant, 4hrs in AM and put back in bottle for dinner later that night
6/27/21, 5:30 AM - No decant actually. Have some left for night 2 so we'll see if it improves. It's in a good stage to try-almost like a barrel sample.
6/15/21, 6:10 PM - Agree 100% on the oak treatment.
5/19/21, 4:41 PM - Roy, you should be very proud of this wine. Did you see what else we tasted that night? It definitely held it's own. Too bad I don't own a '16 to compare to the other '16's.
5/19/21, 7:44 PM - Awesome! Looking forward to it. FYI notes from JVIZ and Cos65 are some tasting.
5/16/21, 2:04 PM - Just had the '00 with JV and it was fantastic. Odd oak notes? There was oak on this but integrated.
5/16/21, 7:00 AM - No. Followed bottle over about 5hrs with small sample left for today. I found it didn’t seem to get better with air.
5/15/21, 4:50 AM - Guessing you clicked "flawed" by accident? Seems like a nice bottle!
5/7/21, 4:18 AM - Really enjoyed this in 2018-19, but agree with your disappointment on recent bottles. I think it's going through a dumb phase.
5/4/21, 3:25 AM - 6hrs double decant and then followed over another 6-7hrs
4/3/21, 2:56 PM - It’s a big wine. But it wasn’t closed after a splash decant. I probably won’t open my other bottle for 5yrs or so
3/24/21, 4:31 AM - It’s a fun wine, nothing more. Maybe has too much red pigment for you??
1/24/21, 7:01 AM - Disappointing that it’s not much better 4yrs later.
1/10/21, 6:08 AM - Doesn’t look like it. May have to try one. I had the ‘90 last year which I thought was a touch stronger than the ‘89
1/1/21, 4:22 AM - I'll look into that....we like similar OR Pinots so maybe this one too!
12/30/20, 7:36 PM - I can see that. It still needs some time. I didn't realize I had opened my other bottle so recently. Oops
12/27/20, 6:40 AM - Drunk finger. Fixed. Thanks.
12/22/20, 3:06 PM - It was not as strong on night two. R was a fan both nights.
12/15/20, 8:18 PM - Agreed. If this is what global warming is going to do the Loire...hopefully we learn to handle the warmer vintages better.
12/14/20, 5:25 PM - Popped and poured night 1. 1 glass poured, recorked in fridge. Night 2 was still super tight, opened up after 4hrs in decanter but better at hour 6. Poured back in bottle. Maybe slightly less expressive on night 3 but was still fresh. So I’d say don’t even bother if you can’t do a 4hr decant, probably longer.
10/6/20, 4:20 AM - Almost sounds heat damaged
10/6/20, 10:20 AM - Living in Texas I've been burned many times. To me, "caramel" is not a flavor I associated with bdx and I've only experienced in suspect bottles. happened all the time in Texas, less so in VA--so suspect heat/poor storage.
9/26/20, 8:55 PM - FYI- this was showing better on night 2. I think it’llImprove with time but long decant may help if opening now.
9/21/20, 5:50 PM - Sometimes I just pop a bottle and don't read my last note :)I reorder W&M tomorrow, let me know if you want something in '18 vintage.
9/21/20, 5:48 PM - Color seemed ok (I think). It was the rather soft acidity that implied maturity to me. '05 is a very different animal.
9/7/20, 4:45 AM - Oops. Probably bumped the flawed button on my phone. Fixed now. Thanks.
8/13/20, 6:42 PM - Just opened a bottle and thought this really turned around. Curious if you’ve tried it again since ‘17
7/29/20, 5:17 AM - Man, doesn't sound like you're optimistic! I think I have 6 '11 Matello left. Maybe I should drink them quicker?
7/30/20, 7:43 PM - A wine with a warranty? That’s a first! Really not necessary, but I guess there’s a reason Goodfellow is my #2 holding? (Maybe #1 soon?)
7/18/20, 2:59 PM - Too bad it was my last one. Fantastic wine Roy!
5/30/20, 4:14 PM - Much better on night 2. See note
5/16/20, 6:20 PM - Wait a year and see where it’s at.
5/9/20, 7:10 AM - Yes! Waay too young. The ‘96s are still babies!
