At the end of a 6 hour session, but man was this good. Everything you want and expect from a high-class 40 year old Bordeaux. Beautifully resolved with mostly red fruits, tobacco, earthy goodness. This bottle had excellent provenance and it showed. Beat my expectations. Outstanding wine that's in the perfect window to drinking now.

Quick note. Small pour. Very Chave like in profile and seems to be quite approachable (like the 04 was a few weeks ago). Clearly has longterm aging potential, but if you're lucky to have a good stash of these, no shame in pulling a cork. 93+

Quick note. Lighter and more approachable than I remember. Served blind to experienced tasters (albeit at the end of a long session) and the guesses were late 90s or early 00s. Great acidity and balance. Extremely refined and classy. Should be a real beauty with proper age but fun to try this one young.

Served Blind. From 375ml. Immediately recognizable as riesling. Really strong wine, very well balance and not as sweet as I would have expected. Live-wire acidity keeps this fresh and energetic. A rare Auslese that I could drink all night. Outstanding now and boundless potential. 93+

Served Blind. From first sniff you could tell this is a high pedigree wine. Youthful but gorgeous with dark red fruits, licorice, hint of floral. First growth quality. I thought maybe Margaux from perfumed and floral nose, but after tasting this, went to straight to Latour based on the power. Structured yet classy with loads of potential and depth on the palate. After about an hour in the glass this started to clamp up a bit. This is certainly in its early drinking window, but there's a lot more to come. 94+

Tough to follow the incredible 98 VCC, but this showed despite the lofty competition. Certainly not as silky as the VCC and showing more Cab Franc with the bell pepper, a touch more astringent and less polished. On its own I reckon this would have me more excited, but that 98 VCC was stunning and difficult for any wine to follow that. This is firmly in it's prime drinking window and hard to see this improvement with further development.

Served Blind. Incredibly perfumed nose, jumping from the glass. I could just smell this all day. On the palate this was pure silk and perfectly balanced. Polished profile in all the right ways. The structure is all there for longer term aging, but this is showing so amazingly well right now, not a hair out of place. Stunning juice. 95+

Served Blind. Came out a bit too cold and came across as very linear and precise, reminding me of the 169ed which I absolutely love. Very Krug in profile. As it warmed up, the taut profile softened a touch and this become a bit a more generous. Excellent acidity, lemony and minerals. Can be thoroughly enjoyed now but a long life ahead with lots of upside.

Showing quite a bit younger than the 81 Haut Brion next to it, and a lot more polished as you would expect from an '82. Lifted nose, brighter red fruits, more generous fruit on both the palate and nose. Really beautiful wine and in the perfect zone for drinking now, nothing to be gained to hold this longer.

Served Blind. Quite a beautiful mature nose, a bit dusty as first, classic older Bordeaux. Palate was a touch dry, but everything else was great--refined and resolved, yet the tannins were a touch rustic (not in a bad way). Producer trumps vintage here. Very enjoyable and certainly at peak.

Wow, this was drinking incredibly well and beat my expectations. Early in its drinking window, but open for business and showing the strength of the vintage. The nose is quite intoxicating, darker red fruits, hints of tertiary notes. Very well balanced on the palate, beautiful fruit and acidity. Should a great one to follow over the next 10+ years, but no shame at all in popping a bottle now. 92+

Classic Krug, quite approachable, crushed rocks, touch of light toast, soft lemon. Palate was baked green apples, rounder edges plus the lively acidity put this in great balance. Open and relatively accessible now, but I feel this has a long runway ahead of it with tons of potential. An excellent Krug but I don't think it will ever match the 96 or 08...but time will tell. 94+

This was a bit shy at first, taking some time to come out of its shell, but after 30min the glass it began to uncoil and offer up classic 08 crunchy red fruits, hints of underbrush with a fresh and transparent profile. Throughout the course of the evening (4+ hours) this continued to unfurl, showing more depth and layers, but maintaining its high energy personality. This is very 2008 (a vintage which I have liked very much since the beginning) with tart red/berry fruit, high acid and minerality--classic cooler year Burgundy. In stiff competition, this showed extremely well and has a long and wonderful life ahead of it. 94+

Wow, what a stunning nose. This had a curious combination of maturity and freshness, floral with savoury, and gorgeous red fruits framed with Vosne spice. Really intoxicating nose and one I could not stop smelling. On the palate this was elegant and very giving, with layers of softer fruit and a balanced and seamless mouthfeel. Hard to believe this is a 2010 as it's much more mature than you would expect for its age, but it's showing so well right now it's hard to see that much upside (I also don't see this falling apart anytime soon). In an evening of excellent Burgundy, this may have been the wine of the night for me, and at a minimum, the nose of the night.

Opened and consumed over 5 hours. At first good dose of sulphur on the nose, but that blew off, and beneath was a stunning young wine. You would never know it’s a riper year as the profile is quite focused with lemon, minerality and energetic acid. Very pure with concentrated fruit that gives you a hint of the more solar vintage, but everything else here is precise. This bottle was extremely fresh. Long on the palate with a good bit dry extract. Towards the end of the evening this started to coil up a bit. Really lovely wine and I will try to let my remaining bottles age a few more years as there is a lot of potential here. 94+

Tasted Blind. Almost a Coche-like nose with citrus, nuts, touch of honey and gun flint. A bit reductive and subtle oak as well. On the palate this was big and rich but with enough acidity and energy to keep it poised. An intense wine with incredible texture. While more of a traditional Meursault profile vs the more linear and mineral Roulot, this Ente finds a way to remain refined despite the weight and intensity. This punches way above its level. I might have a slight preference to the Roulot (stylistically), but the hype of Ente certainly seems justified.

Tasted blind. This was opened several hours prior to serving. A rich yet floral nose with white flowers, lemon curd, hint of bees wax and loads of minerality. On the palate this has amazing concentration with riper yellow fruit, yet offered so much precision and focus. Great acidity and energy. An intense yet lively mouthfeel. Guesses were Puligny and maybe 2010 vintage. Once this was revealed it all made sense—Roulot always manages to retain energy and acidity even in riper vintages. Beautiful wine.

Tasted Blind. Unfortunately this appears to be a bid advanced. Slightly darker than you would expect with a rich bruised apple nose that didn’t have the fresher (and minty!) profile. After some time in the glass, however, the nose freshened up, the mint/spearmint came out to play, and there was a more lifted profile with some light spice as well. The palate is dense and concentrated, but just a few steps back of where you would like it to be. Certainly an enjoyable wine, and one that got better with air, but it never really got into top form.

In my experience this wine is incredible consistent and always shows up, and this bottle was no different. Still youthful with lemon curd, rocky minerals and autolytic notes on the nose which was so expressive and engaging. Rich and vibrant on the palate with tremendous tension and acidity. Fine bubbles give a beautiful crispness to the layered and almost creamy texture. Superbly balanced, complex and complete. A reference CdC and a brilliant 1996 that is clearly in a great window for enjoying, but has a longer future of positive development ahead. 95+

Quite savoury on the nose, red berries and sous bois. Salty and floral. High toned palate, more savoury and red berry fruit, and it leaves you with a prickly sensation in the mouth. Profile is quite lean, sharp acidity, very light in weight/body. I quite like this, although I don’t think the leanness and profile would be ideal for those who prefer richer/rounder wines. In the zone now and I don’t see this getting any better with further age.

Tasted blind. Very Dom P nose with yeasty brioche, yellow and white fruits. Palate was a bit creamy and soft at first but the lemon profile and acidic spine bring it all together. At first this came across and soft and creamy, but will time in the glass certainly firmed up and showed a bit more balance in terms of forward fruit and acidity/energy. I'll likely keep my hands off for at least 5+ years. 93+

This exceeded my expectations and showed better than a previous bottle a few years ago. Showed youthfully and the guesses from experienced tasters were 1990 or 1996. Detailed and fine on the palate with a beautiful profile of truffle, lemon and a touch of apple. Super fresh with lively acidity and fine bubbles. Outstanding.

Tasted blind. Lots of brett as first (not offensively so) but based on the nose alone I’m guessing Northern Rhone. After a bit more time in the glass spice, dark fruited and old school in profile. Despite the brett on the nose, there’s a purity and polish to the palate. The wine has some muscle. Once it was established that we were in the 90s I guessed 93. Very youthful showing and not what we were expecting when it was revealed. A generous pull from the host but he seemed disappointed with the showing. Perhaps another decade in the cellar will sort it out.

Tasted blind. Smells like Burgundy but could it be a really old northern Rhone? Red fruited, black tea, hint of pine resins. I think this is in the 80s. Someone guessed 85 and bang on. Pure red fruited plated that started out masculine but with air became more feminine. Based on the nose you would think that this could be from the 70s, yet the palate profile was more youthful. A beautiful wine.

This was double decanted an hour before serving but still was extremely tight and unyielding for the first hour or so in the glass. Clamped down but as it began to open the tight and linear profile began to expand and open up. Has the tell tale Ramonet mint/spearmint note with some white flower, lemon and touch of honey. Serious wine but needs another decade in the cellar. 94+

Tasted Blind. Wow big nose (and palate) right off the bat. Lots going on, very complex. Touch of toast, lemon, honey drizzle. On the palate this packs and punch but is extremely well proportioned. Has the chiseled structure of my favorite white burgs. Really outstanding and fresh and lively. Strong acidic spine. Guessed Roulot, Leflaive, Lafon, PYCM. All wrong. Could it be Coche? Yes...makes sense now but doesn’t have the telltale signs that immediately would take me to Coche. Maybe I just need to drink more Coche! Either way, stunning wine.

This was very young as you would expect and hasn’t shed much of its baby fat yet. The fruit is classy yet polished and still has that youthful flesh to it. Profile is deep darker fruits (cassis, blackberry) with intensity and weight you would expect from LMHB. Plenty of structure to balance the fruit to keep this going for decades. Wasn’t as approachable as some of the other 2014 Bordeaux I’ve had but this also showed a ton of potential and should be a stunning wine in 20+ years.

Gorgeous nose and one that takes you straight to Northern Rhone. Nose is darker red fruits, olive tapenade, touch of florals and pepper. On the palate this shows a bit more youthfully with plenty of weight, length and fruit to balance the fine and polished tannins. There’s great acidity on the backend keeping the profile lively and vibrant. The finish is long and silky. In a great place now but has the stuffing to continue aging gracefully for many more years.

Horsey funk nose that you would expect for a 41 year old Montrose. Quite a powerful profile with intense darker fruits with leather and tobacco notes. Still a good dose of structure and acidity which nicely balance the sweeter fruit profile that you expect from 82s. This fell nicely in the middle of the 83 Mouton and 83 Gruaud Larose: more masculine and less elegant than the Mouton, but not as rugged as the GL. In a great place but this can go for years.

This was interesting to drink alongside the 83 Gruaud Larose. The GL had more funk and was darker in profile, while this Mouton was more red fruited and elegant. Silky on the palate and showing so much class and refinement. Generous yet lightweight. I thought this showed so much class and really enjoyed it. Showed very well right off the bat and continued to get better over the course of several hours. Can enjoy now or hold for many more years.

Quite a beautiful nose that could only be from mature Burgundy. Palate wasn’t as pleasant at first but it did improve with air and my last glass was more than decent. Old school Faiveley structure here yet showed some delicacy as well. Would have been better 5-10 years ago but showed better than expected given the vintage.

Tasted blind. This was showing incredibly well. Nose was booming right out the gate with a strong iron and black fruit profile that had us thinking Gevrey. Yet on the palate there was elegance and power that had some thinking Chambolle or Volnay. In the end, the polish, depth and class of this wine brought me to a Grand Cru either from Dujac or Meo. This still has the structure you would expect but most of the baby fat from the vintage has shed but there’s still a hint of that ‘fleshy’ mouthfeel that many 12s have. This improved over the course of a few hours. Outstanding young Burgundy and certainly at its early drinking window.

Tasted blind. After 30-60 minutes in the decanter this was banging and never stopped. Colour was a touch darker yellow than the 04 Luchets but was every bit as youthful and fresh. The lemon custard and saline nose was stunning and I would have bet the farm this was Raveneau. Palate was intense and full of energy with more citrus and minerality. Perfectly balanced acidity and weight, with excellent cut. Really outstanding.
