This did not live up to its reputation, lacking all the complex notes I was expecting. Probably just an off bottle.

3/2/22, 11:28 AM - (Responding to paintinginacave) This wine absolutely deserved a score of 90 points. I said it was underwhelming compared to my expectations because I was expecting a 92 or 93 based on previous vintages.

Fresh, tart, red fruits and sour candy, delicious.

I bought a case on release and there was no individual price for any of the wines, but it's around $35?

Couldn't resist popping one of these fresh off the truck. Another wonderful vintage of Alturas. On opening, an unfamiliar mineral note which quickly blew off, but also the dark fruit and slightly-sweet floral note typical of Alturas. On the palate, deep blue and red fruits, some meat and black pepper, herbs and subtle flowers/violets. A little less flowery than other vintages at this early stage. Tannins are significant and drying, but not unpleasant.

Day 2: Somewhat mellowed and smoother, but still compelling and completely fresh.

I enjoy Alturas both young and with some age. You basically can't go wrong with this wine. So, so good.

4/26/19, 12:39 PM - Conventional wisdom is to let this wine rest for years before drinking it, but I find it to be excellent young as well. I'm also impatient. And I have had the experience of waiting years to drink a bottle and then not liking it as much as I did when it was young! So I buy several bottles of each vintage of Alturas and drink them at different ages.

Very nice, well-made modern grenache. Just enough complexity and depth to raise it above a simple CA Rhone clone. Light red, translucent, almost slightly brown. Tastes to me like it's at its' peak right now.

Sadly, this particular bottle had none of the bacon notes and was a bit muted compared to previous bottles. It was a fresh delivery direct from the winery, and may have been suffering from travel shock? Whatever the reason, it was not nearly as good as I was expecting. Just a simple, balanced Syrah. I look forward to the next one.

Perfectly consistent with my 5/4/13 notes. And drinking quite nicely. Only one more bottle left. Wish I had more at the $11 all-in price I paid, but maybe not so much at the $22 web price I found. If a '12 comes across the pond, I would probably by a few bottles.

6/14/13, 5:53 AM - Sadly, the 2012 is a much more pedestrian wine. Not bad, but just lacking the ethereal edge that the 2011 has.
