4/18/24, 4:32 PM - Thanks Mphatic. This was from a half bottle. The science is interesting and I will chase down some more reading on the topic. The variability even with different bottles of the same wine interests me as it suggests rather like premox that its not just what happens in the vineyard and in the fermenters that count but that at the time of bottling different bottles are set up for different evolutions. I do find that my favourite bottles are those where the the wine alone shines rather than TDN or other distractors.
11/30/23, 4:35 PM - Thanks Lightning for your comment - I wondered whether others had similar experiences with Giaconda. Certainly this bottle shocked the nine experienced drinkers around our table !
12/17/23, 6:00 PM - Thanks wizlb - I'll be interested to hear who you fare. Our experienced group of nine all found it close to undrinkable in a great group of wines. Hopefully its just a one bottle problem !
10/20/23, 12:36 AM - Hi Palisades57. Thanks for your enquiry. This was decanted for approximately 3 hours before pouring and continued to unfurl in the glass. In my experience the best 09s are 50 year wines that will slowly unfurl over the ages - they certainly stand up to decanting ! We have now had the La Tache, RSV and Richebourg as part of 2001-2009 DRC vertical yearly for the past 3 years. The 09s are all fabulous but very large scale.
1/13/22, 4:07 PM - I'm both hardening in my opposition to traditional corks and wondering why premium wine producers don't spend another 1-2 dollars a bottle for corks screened for TCA.
1/6/22, 3:34 PM - My instinct is yes and I wont be in a hurry to drink my remaining bottles. Equally I suspect given a smaller group ( we had 8 at lunch ) and time may have shone a torch on some further depths in this bottle. But that's Christmas/New Year. Its worth noting that the whole wine literate group of friends woke up after Champagne, Brunello 2010 x 2, Barolo and Margaret River Cabernets and exclaimed 'Wow' !
1/5/22, 11:53 PM - I double decanted it in the classic Parker fashion after coming out of our 14C cellar and then it sat opened in its original bottle for 6 hours before tasting. With all of that it continued to evolve over a couple of hours in the glass. Terrific glass of wine with plenty of cellar life remaining IMHO.
9/29/21, 9:10 PM - Yes its the thrills and spills with White Burgundy still !
6/13/21, 8:12 PM - Thank you for the note. Did you Audouze the wine ie leave it standing in the cellar cork withdrawn for several hours ? Certainly in my hands it greatly assists old Burgundy and with 96s in particular and with this wine it makes a dramatic difference. JB
3/25/21, 2:55 AM - Spot on mphatic ! A review of my fairly extensive Prum collection shows only 8.5% Zeltinger. Given the beautiful fruit flavours this vineyard imparts early on in these wines its an imbalance that needs to be addressed !
3/23/21, 2:38 PM - Thank you Redders for your comment. I agree with your thoughts on 96-99 and have reported many great bottles of 2000. However just to remind me along comes 2 in a row premoxed from 2000 ! My wife claims them for cooking ! Interestingly both had very soft easy to remove corks.
1/7/20, 4:09 AM - Its just too delicious to let it grow old !
11/27/19, 12:46 PM - Yes all in quick succession until I chose a 2009 Ramonet 1er Cru - perfect !All of the premoxed bottles were from cases where I had also had pristine bottles. Anyone who suggests that this is not, at least in part, a bottling or closure problem is dreaming !
9/8/19, 3:23 PM - Thanks Parko. Overall the Mount Mary team have succeeded in that difficult area of generational change not only in maintaining the charm of their family run business but aiming for and achieving continuous improvement. I think the recent vintages of Quintet show the rewards of their approach. Equally vintage conditions play a consistently important role and they appear to be working very hard to understand the vagaries of each year.
8/27/19, 5:37 PM - Yes Conrad this was definitely under Stelvin. If you check the Farr Vintners site they have it available in that format. At a recent dinner featuring a prominent Margaux chateau ( not Rauzan ) the senior member of their team present opined that their long term studies showed this was clearly the best closure for their Grand Cru wine. However market surveys showed poor consumer acceptance in the US and parts of Europe. A great shame particularly for white wine.
5/1/19, 2:59 AM - Yes very disappointing. After the first few which showed variable degrees of premox I lost interest and ripped through the rest in disgust. They all had that horrible dirty bronze colour and dead apple nose. A disgrace ! Opened a 2001 Graves which was lovely !
4/29/19, 12:20 AM - Thanks Parko for your comment. My experience is that these can age for many years but I'm not sure that it adds much and we love that zesty refreshing character that is the signature of these wines particularly in the first 5 years. They suit our climate and Asian inspired cooking perfectly !
4/29/19, 11:57 PM - We love JJ Prum in all forms in our house but Donnhoff, Egon Muller when you can find it, Weil and Thanisch are also very very rewarding. All a refreshing change from the lottery of White Burgundy !
12/5/18, 9:59 PM - Hi Colin - we opened the whole flight around 2 hours before and left them undecanted in a cool dining room. The Musigny was the tightest but the CV certainly needed the time.I'm in Melbourne a few times a year. The last was for our wine group 'out of town' week-end at Jackalope on the Peninsula. It was fabulous but not yet documented !
9/7/18, 2:46 PM - This was a restaurant wine and I suspect a quite recent disgorgement. The freshness was the the striking and pleasing thing about this wine suggesting improvements in the attention to the base NV at Lanson. It followed a favourable experience recently of the Rose. The price of both is very attractive !
6/3/18, 5:29 PM - Agree entirely JTR ! Picking the best time to open a great Burgundy is always a challenge as is giving the best wines the drinking time they deserve to allow them to unfurl. I wondered similarly about the Ponsot Chambertin. A tasting note is just a photograph of one point in time with all the inherent limitations of image making !
12/18/17, 1:45 PM - Thank you ESCO - its a good story to tell and certainly helps me remember the wine !
8/27/17, 6:35 PM - I'm pleased it was in good shape ! Its all about the storage and the cork !
12/8/15, 3:53 PM - Thanks for the comment - I have found a number of the high profile 2004 Yarra Cabs thinning with age. The herbaceous aspect is becoming more pronounced rather than dropping back into the mix. I compared the YY with the 2007 Domaine de Chevalier over several hours and the difference in texture and weight of the ripe fruit simply became more pronounced with time in the glass - and 07 is often said to be the least Bordeaux vintage of that decade. Time will tell !
8/18/15, 7:23 PM - I think there are many years left when cellared well : the risk is that tannin of 2002 outliving the fruit but LB in 2002 seems to have captured plenty of ripeness albeit with a touch of astringency that typifies the year cf 2000 or 2005.
8/8/15, 10:45 PM - Thanks wine65 ! Congratulations on 50 - hope to have a a couple of bottles of the 96 left for 60 next year. I think the 08 will be a beauty over the next 20 years.
10/24/14, 12:10 AM - It was a great wine : It was the new packaging with a recent delivery suggest it was in the Heidsieck cellars until release perhaps accounting for its mature but fresh character.
5/3/14, 5:02 PM - Initially poured from Coravin and aired in the glass only short time. I suspect I would pour into carafe normally and leave breath for 30 mins or so. The nose is delightful from the start but certainly develops.
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
