“This expressive red is dynamic, yet retains a sense of elegance and refinement, showing pomegranate and blueberry flavors underscored by river stone and dusky spice accents. Builds tension toward lively tannins. Drink now through 2032. 4,888 cases made.

I have not tried this yet. Bought 2 bottles based on above WS review. For $29 I’d be happy with a 92. We shall see.

2021 Peay Vineyards Pinot Noir Pomarium Estate Sonoma Coast
Pomarium represents the more muscular style of Pinot Noir at Peay. The artistry and balance achieved by winemaker Vanessa Wong are quite impressive. We shouldn't be surprised given her pedigree of making wine at Peter Michael, Lafite-Rothschild and Domaine Jean Gros in Vosne-Romanée.

Wine Advocate and Lisa Perrotti-Brown's The Wine Independent think this is one special Pinot Noir. Jeb goes a step further and believes it is as close to perfect as you get!

"The 2021 Pinot Noir Pomarium. is packed with notes of black cherry liqueur and kirsch, pure ripe fruit, a touch of sage, and sweet earth. It’s more grounded and muscular, with ripe, broad tannins, and has great depth as well as a grounded nature, with good fruit throughout. Drink over 2026-2046."

Been a year since my last bottle of this vintage....pnp'd to go with Carol's lunch of homemade Bechamel lasagna. I think I may have missed out on my bottle of this one last year by giving it too much air at the beginning.

Dark purple, opaque in the glass. Nose of cassis, with a hint of forest floor. Palate is big and rich and energetic. Bags of smooth red/black fruit, high quality fruit, well integrating tannins and wonderful acidity backing it all up. This is going down very smooth right now. Nice long finish, too. This starts at the pnp as a 92-93, but with as little as 2 hours of air it's an easy 95 now, fades a little after 2-3 hours of air but it's basically gone by then anyway. Kudos to Michael Savaiano for making this one!

1/10/24, 2:55 PM - 2019 was the 1st year I purchased and opened one in June. My experience was similar to your's, Mark: delicious from go and gone quickly.

It's worth noting that for 2021, Michael sourced from a different vineyard. I tasted with him in November, and he explained the location. I have limited knowledge of the area - it sounded like it was in the Prichard Hill area.

Versus 2019, 2021 was more masculine for me, with more earth, mineral, and a touch of iodine. The 2019, was a more plush, layered fruit-like valley floor.

Michael says he makes wine more for early drinking (which tracks) and believes he will have access to the same vineyard as used for 2021 moving forward.

BTW, he just got stratospheric scores from Dunnuck for the 2021s (Napa Valley CS and the new I Nonni CS), if you care about that stuff. (I don't so much, but am glad he is getting recognition)

Super guy. Delicious wines. I went for 6 of the regular and 3 of the I Nonni.

This wine at ten years has gone from a dumb phase to something close to perfection. What a transformation.

12/27/23, 9:30 PM - We tasted at the winery in November and the most special bottle served was the 2014 Seavey CS. I'm not sure how long it was open (we tasted around 1:30). Boy was it singing!🎶. Dark fruited, balanced, integrated, and long. I do think that there are many years ahead and positive tertiary development is likely, but it was delicious.

No rush but in a nice window.

I don't have a lot of experience with Red Mountain Bordeaux varietals. This bottle got me to remember the Cadence, Corliss, and Force Majeure I have tucked away.

My only other experience (that I am sure of) with Chris Upchurch wines is the killer Chaleur Estate Blanc from Delille. I'd have to say now that I would try his reds again.

Dark fruit profile holding up, still some structure. Opened up with a couple hours in a decanter.

Not sure there is pretty tertiary development in the future but not ruled out. With 2 more, likely will hold one for scientific purposes.
  • Empirate commented:

11/21/23, 11:07 AM - Always can learn more!

Though not a frank green bell pepper, I got a bit of a higher-toned structure that I attribute to pyrazines. However, I enjoy it in the context of an otherwise complete flavor profile where the fruit is adequately ripe, and the pyrazines add structure and flavors that complement many foods we enjoy. That is to say, I may have a high tolerance (high threshold).

Hope you enjoy yours (and have time to leave a note!). Cheers!

First of three from a large private party purchase about 2.5 years ago (hard to price individual bottles, but about $80@). On the nose and palate, black currants and cherries and lesser notes of mixed dark berries, red licorice, coffee grounds, dark chocolate, smoke, graphite and a bit of forest spice. Dark crimson, medium to full bodied, thick legs. Medium+ tannins, silky and well-integrated, medium acidity, very well integrated alcohol (15% abv). VG+ complexity and persistence, good+ intensity. My first so much as sip of any O’Shaughnessy product, and, unlike for many other tasters, it came out of the bottle singing, with its large elements beautifully balanced, mouth filling and well-integrated, a lovely and sophisticated pour. This version of this bottling hits a good spot on the Napa-BDX continuum, with sweet, opulent fruit held in a really nice spot by solid structure and just a touch of savoriness. Consistent notes over 3 nights of tasting, equally solid on its own and with a veal chop. Just a bit more concentration and delineation could have lifted this from excellence to closer to greatness. I was a bit surprised, relative to other ‘13s at fairly similar price points I’ve had in the past year-18 months (Chappellet, Nickel & Nickel CC, Riverain, Hartwell ER), at the level of maturity in this wine; it drinks like it’s already in the middle of its drinking window. I don’t think slippage is likely anytime soon but suspect it’s at or close to peak, and I’ll drink my remaining bottles in the next couple of years, maybe a bit less. Notable qpr at what I paid for it, if a bit less inspiring at the $130-150 I’m currently seeing on WS. Under any circumstances, really solid showing, and looking forward to my remaining bottles. 94++

Bought this on recommendation of a local retailer to whom I gave a brief that I was seeking a top drawer Napa cabernet sauvignon or blend with at least 5+ years age on it, for drinking now rather than cellar, to accompany a Christmas rib of beef, for a budget $100. "Good luck!" seemed to be her unspoken reaction, but of the three offerings she proposed I opted for this one. I was not disappointed, but I will always have high expectations of any wine costing more than $100.

Decanted on the day for 6 hours, testing now and then. Colour of aubergine, scent of summer flowers, palate of dark fruits, earthy spices and oak. Medium finish. Very Napa, with a hint of Bdx.

2nd day: very little degradation. Silkier. Oak more subdued. Some leather now evident. A nice wine. However ... I am sure there are many wines of similar high quality at or well below this price point. Reading up on it, I appreciate the pedigree of both its grapes and winemaker, but for what is, frankly, a second wine from young vines, one suspects that a good part of this wine's price and prestige are a function of name-drop star worship.

Not too often do I get to write the first CT TN on a wine. A very pleasant surprise, definitely recommend and a good QPR wine at our purchase price from the Wine Vault in Charlotte NC. A very good and still very young single vineyard Oregonian pinot from a well respected producer - right now more of a hold then a drink. With more age I see the score going up at least 1-2 points. At this point dark purple, very approachable even at this point with well balanced tannins and with appropriate cellaring this wine should continue improving for another 5 years and then be well drinkable for at least another 5 years beyond that. Fresh floral nose with dark cherry present, surprisingly soft mouth feel, medium long aftertaste with primary flavors as expected of dark cherry, a touch of oak and more strawberry then raspberry. The 1st of 12 bottles, looking forward to seeing how they age over the next 5-10 years.

ADDENDUM 10/10/2021: Pulled 2nd bottle sooner then anticipated. The 1st bottle was pretty much destroyed when opened but this 2nd bottle carried into the next day - even better the next day showing how young this wine is and how much it benefits from time and air right now. 91+ points 2nd day.

Nose and palate of toasted brioche, peach, pear, white flowers. Thick, full-bodied, viscous, rounded, 30-45 second finish. perfectly balanced and integrated. Ready to kick some ass. Awesome Zin with a creamy texture and velvety mouthfeel. Starts with crushed blueberry nose with some floral notes. Really balanced in mouth, velvet like feel with flavors of blueberry both at the mid palette and finish. Long lingering flavor which after 30 seconds includes white pepper and doesn't quit. One of the better zinfandel

I last wrote a TN for this wine in 2012 and I'm amazed at how similar it still is today! A really lovely wine, the 2009 Pegau is deep blackish-purple with a strikingly aromatic nose centered on a blackberry compote, crème de cassis and spice cake, but with all sorts of nuanced notes: melted licorice, Provençal herbs, black chocolate. On the palate, you are reminded of plum torte yet the level of acidity and tannins keep the fruit in check -- an almost Burgundian palate. Very long finish. This really is a great Pegau… I bought 12 and should have gone for 24. Given the slow pace of evolution, you can drink it now but it will still be a stunner 10 years from now.

    5/17/18, 4:59 AM - Chatters!

I see you are a terrific TN producer and want to say a sincere “thank you” for that.

I don’t understand why you think I was suggesting things as you describe them so please allow me an attempt to clarify: the CT score(s) someone gives is forever a part of the permanant representation (in current format) and that has the benefit of gaining great diverse representation over time but simultaneously the downside of being less representative of current drinker experiences over time. Secondly, unlimited input to that score skews it to that persons biases.

In other words. I am a huge fan of TNs. I also find the scoring a good summary experience indicator. But in the CT system of unlimited input, the “Community Score” is neither current nor protected from individual bias.

Example: a nice TN on a 2012 Ch. Trotanoy scores 5 points below the CT average and states “it just isn't nearly ready yet”. That’s valid but why attach that impression that it is too early to the wine forever. If an hour, day, and week later, that same person tasted the wine, her/his TNs may still be adding new and worthwhile info which also could be summed up with a score. Taking in to account the CT format, these impressions are better to state in the text of the TN, IMO.

Same is true for flawed bottles that people score. And don’t get me started about different scoring philosophies, value judgements, or the possibility of nefarious intent.

I doubt Eric will ever address this issue, for me it is a real problem that could be improved with limiting the individual input to the overall score. I suggest either an average or updated single input score (that has NO impact on the historical record of that person’s unlimited number of TNs including the scores associated with them) would be ways to do it but there may be much better options.

Anyway, I hope this is taken in a collegial spirit as intended. Cheers!

Decanted this bottle and let it stand quite a while. It was very nice and I enjoyed it. Its my first taste of any of the O'Shaughnessy Cabs. I'd like to try the regular NAPA as I am not sure the QPR is great on this one.

Lovely at first (as expected), but with air, and by the 90 minute mark, an initial spot of brett had manifested into something more problematic, and the wine was, finally, unenjoyable. Very surprised this occured, likely a one-off. Six left, with high hopes.

How was your visit? (Since you are going back, I could guess). Looks bellissimo...

The wine was medium to dark ruby in colour and showed plenty of oak, red and dark fruit, chocolate, cocoa, spice, vanilla, coconut and smoke on the nose. On the palate, the wine showed red and dark fruit, sweet oak, dark chocolate, cocoa, vanilla and coconut, with medium-level acidity and tannin, a creamy mouthfeel and very good length. The medium-bodied, ripe and oaky wine benefited from aeration, but the oak was very dominant at the wine’s current stage and I will hold on to my other bottles for a while to see how the wine develops.

Still young, but nevertheless, a great bottle. Lots of fruit in the nose and flavor, blueberries, blackberries, currants, black cherries, and hints of chocolate. Long finish, smooth tannins, and nice complexity. I look forward to future bottles from my cellar. This was purchased at The Oven (Cellar) in Lincoln, NE for about retail price along with a 2010 K Vintners The Beautiful. Great wine list with excellent prices!

Decanted for 1h and poured back in bottle before serving. Rather muted bottle, quite dried out fruit and missing the expected "ompf". Not bad, just not interesting. It felt like it was going downhill...

Love this wine! Great Rhine style blend with great nose, terrific mouth feel and full prolonged finish. Major fruit might offend some but for me, it doesn't get much better. Hats off to Mark!

IMHO, this is ot a tasting note. If you want to reproduce your prior notes and have that arrive in everyone's TN feed, maybe copy and paste?

Hope you keep enjoying good stuff, I look forward to reading about it.

  • Empirate commented:

    7/17/17, 5:12 AM - Slaz, that's a nice, thoughtful note!

I intended no insult, was just providing feedback. I've commented to others also about "similar to previous note" type TNs and believe this open forum community is improved by well meaning communications. I do understand if you simply disagree about the practice.

Our visit to ACV in 2013 (when we acquired the 2010s) was also enjoyable. We didn't get to meet the winemaker but really liked the wines and the opportunity to barrel taste one of the Block Wines from 2012.

    Cheers!
