lovely color; sweet citrus blossom nose; welch's grape juice and cherry kool aid on the start followed by cool minerality, real structure and some tea on the finish; very interesting, in a california style. I admit that i preferred the more subtle $14 provence rose next to it
calmer and more savory on day two, with slate, nectarine, citrus notes and je ne sais quoi.
Seems to be a rose that you could hold, for my taste (and has the stuffing to try)

6/16/22, 10:11 AM - 2020 Les Vins Breban Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence Domaine de la Chapelle St. Victor purchased at K&L; i gave them both the same score, but i preferred the more subtle/less potent one (it was also a year older)---simply a matter of taste

what jmull said; red fruit and herbal tea; lovely and bright; the fruit still has some primary characteristics; worth holding for a bit

5/5/22, 11:20 AM - certainly drinkable now, but i am holding my last two bottles for a couple of years

2018 Talenti Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese
The first bottle tasted was clearly off; the second bottle, ideal. Put this in the ever-growing category of really good, highly recommended rosso di Montalcino wines that need a few years before they'll be in their ideal drinking windows. Great freshness, energy, structure, etc., though the complexity factor will require some more bottle rest before it's begun to show itself. Medium-bodies, textbook, and exactly what I've come to expect from this producer. I'm sad to see these wines creep up in price, but I'm also glad to pay the premium as the quality is there. Medium-bodied, red fruited, with resolved 14,5% abv. HOLD for a few more years. If considering this at say $30, consider something (~ same price) like the 2018 Sesti rosso di Montalcino, instead recommended

After 25 years in the bottle, most of it in my cellar, I expected this to fall apart soon after pouring. The cork was soft and broke up considerably. My surprise, I found an intense sweet and dark bold fruit that was quite pleasant! Pretty nice drinking this. I wish I had more. Drinking your last bottle of something as good as this is in a way quite sad. At age 82+, I am drinking all my oldest first and I have a long way to go to get through my 1200 bottle cellar! Of course I am continuing to acquire new wine weekly, I think I will be gone before it is empty! Life is too short to drink cheap or bad wine! Drink up, and taste it!

9/27/18, 11:53 PM - Just polished off my next to last bottle of this; am in the same boat you are in, now down from 1200 to 900 and coming up with excuses to bring out a good older bottle. Thanks for your note!

Red
2006 Thierry Allemand Cornas Reynard Syrah
Decanted to and from bottle one time, then took to dinner and served from decanter. so all in, about 5 hours of air time. It also showed a bit more density than I was expecting, which was a lighter frame. What's here is classy, though, a mix of pepper, spice, game and tangy black cherry fruit. I still think is too young to really show what is here, or it needs far more decant time than I to let it be respected properly. One thing more. Opening these bottles has to occur so we can all have some baseline and aggregate discussion about potential and readiness. Some who say we need to buy and then put bottles away for long periods of years, I don't agree with that approach as a general rule. In service of my perspective, it was good to get this wine open, and on a weekday night with close friends, have some Allemand that has a pretty good life still ahead of it.

5/10/15, 10:51 PM - Thanks for the update; was thinking about it, and my (100ml) coravin sample at restaurant the other day got no decanter time and not enuf wine to follow in the glass, so I still couldn't sense how much effect a good decant might have--a relative drawback when following 'young' wines by this technique

Decanted for several hours
Nose - orange peel, spices, decomposing cherry
Mouth - complex , strawberry , cherry, very dry, sophisticated, tastes almost like a complex tea. Tannic finish. Perfect with wild boar papparadelle and burratta with speck and figs

I've been sitting on this one a while and it did not disappoint. Very well balanced with fruit and not at all hot. I'll be drinking the rest soon as don't want to take any chances.
  • wabi47 commented:

9/5/14, 11:01 AM - No rush! Just attended a tasting of old Henderlongs (1995-2011) and they aged better than any other zins that I can recall; so even if you aren't a fan of old zins, you can afford to hold at least one bottle....m

nose - deep fruity nose of berries and toasty oak in a pleasant way. There is some good complexity to this nose - could go smelling it for a while. Mouth - ultra rich concentrated and even sappy red fruits coat the palate. A big pinot. with some tannins easily felt on the gums. Then followed by in intense herbal bitter on the midpalate. Tasting like an authentic 'root' beer, or perhaps even reminiscent of a digestif. Very intriguing though i must say i find the bitter out of balance and thus this rich wine to be somewhat flawed. Is it an issue of overextraction? I think some might love this, and it is for sure a genuine effort. If paired properly it could be a winner.

5/8/14, 3:23 PM - hello soyhead....just got my first taste of this, and experienced the same issues that you did....now more bitterroot/iodine than root beer...even though many others don't appear to notice. I have only had a frank root beer experience with a 2009 Troglodyte zin....made by friends of mine, and likely an issue with the oak in that case...over time that wine has also not improved
PS...we appear to be neighbors, as i live in the East Bay as well

Medium-deep to deep red garnet color. Just a slight haziness.
Nose: some black pepper and other spices, cherries, blackberries, some hay and a balsamic touch.
Palate: starts with intense red fruit liquor and then the tannins quickly take over. This happens as the flavour turns more towards earthy and spicy notes. The tannins are very fine-grained but strong and drying - giving the impression of being not fully ripe. On the second day they integrated somewhat.
Enjoyed it most at 15 C - as the wine warmed up I missed some freshness.
I'll add that the last sips I took on the third day after the leftovers spent the night in an open bottle were not bad at all, showing that the wine has probably some upside potential. I'll give some more years to my other bottle.

6/30/13, 12:13 PM - I try to read my notes without looking at others first, but your note is exactly how i feel about this wine.....at a restaurant, so we had no chance to decant, or observe over a day or two, so that part of your note was also helpful....m
