1/19/21, 8:08 AM - No, I did not decant. Decanting champagne is not something I would usually recommend. And with very old champagnes I would definitely not recommend decanting unless you believe the bottle to be somewhat reductive.
1/19/21, 11:30 AM - As I said, I found it fresh and vibrant, witn no very significant ageing. So if I had another bottle I wouldn’t worry very much. But there are two caveats: 1) My bottle was a magnum. An ordinary bottle may well have aged a little bit more. 2) At 30 years of age, we cannot generalize too much: every bottle is unique, so there are few guarantees, but I would definitely be very hopeful.Regarding the question of decanting old champagne, I am firmly in the «I don’t think so» camp. The only exception would be if I opened a bottle and noticed reductive notes, but I don’t think that is very likely. Perhaps about as likely as finding a corked bottle! I think that have happened once and I taste or drink some 50 bottles per year at a minimum. Yeah, I know, it’s not a great number. Wish it was more.
