Far short of a bottle from a couple of months ago. While this is by no means premoxed it lacked energy and clearly not what this wine is fully capable of.

1/30/22, 6:58 AM - Tough to say. The other bottle was so good that it's probably worth the shot. That said I've had a lot of issues with Roulot bottles not showing well recently. Was curious to look back and quantify it and found that I've opened 15 bottles of Roulot in the past 2 years from vintages '09-'13 and 8 of the 15 were somewhere between too advanced and outright premoxed. The wines are so great when they're on so I keep trying but it's frustrating to say the least if it's a 50/50 bet for wines that are only about 10 years old...

Loved this bottling soon after release but this bottle and the last one I had about a year and a half ago weren't quite as impressive. A bit of screechy acidity and didn't feel perfectly harmonious. Still quite youthful so perhaps it's a phase and will come back together with more time.
  • bill00 commented:

8/30/21, 11:39 AM - Ha, my pleasure:) Have to imagine this phase will pass or it's just a little bit of bad luck with a couple of bottles in a row because several bottles back in the '17/'18 time frame were just fantastic and there's no reason to believe this wine shouldn't be great for a very long time (I hope so at least bc I loaded up after tasting it back then!).

Excellent vintage of La Tache. Expressive and complex with vibrant dark red fruit and restrained spice. The '08 vintage leanness / acid is there but it's well-integrated and adds nice energy. My personal quibble with La Tache is that it can sometimes get too dark and earthy to the point of being almost muddy and this vintage is so far from that. Loved this.

8/30/21, 11:26 AM - Thanks! We popped and poured but also drank the bottle over the course of several hours so it had plenty of time to develop. I'm sure it could easily handle a decant but didn't seem necessary and was singing from the start. Obviously it's still young and has a long life ahead but we quite enjoyed it. Also had an '08 DRC Echezeaux last week that was drinking really well so these '08 DRCs generally seem to be in a nice spot right now.

Pristine bottle. Perfectly mature and very expressive. Great aromatics of iron and earth. Nitpicking, there's a bit of minor rusticity I tend to find with Bonnes Mares here but regardless this is a great wine.
  • bill00 commented:

6/30/21, 6:29 AM - Good point, thanks. This was actually not a Chateau & Estate bottle (purchased from a UK cellar) so I guess it was actually likely to be the Terres Blanches.

similar experience as Brad below, drinking this next to a 2010 Lafon Perrieres....we were blinded and confused the two. it didn't have the tension and energy we expected, or the classic reduction. It was a little softer/flatter, perhaps from the vintage? Nothing objectionable and gained in the glass over time, just not special
  • bill00 commented:

5/24/21, 3:20 PM - Looks like we had a pretty similar experience a few days apart. Really disappointing as I had very high hopes for this one!

  • bill00 commented:

5/25/21, 6:29 AM - Ya, I don't have the breadth of experience on '12 whites to fully opine (I love '12 Coche, but Coche is Coche...), but at least in the case of Roulot it seems to me that they were pretty attractive when still a little bit more youthful and now are kind of falling off. Just realized that I actually had a couple of other '12 Roulots (Boucheres and Mon Plaisir) in the past few months that I didn't post notes on b/c they were showing signs of premox (plus one was minorly corked), and in the case of the Boucheres it was also a wine I had a few years ago and really liked. Oh well.

Fantastic aromatics. Stems, spice and florals with great lift and complexity. Refined and delicate with a lightness/weightlessness. This is outstanding and in a perfect spot for my taste.

3/23/21, 9:22 AM - Glad you liked the '10 Lambrays! I've never had the '99 Charmes but this one really is drinking beautifully so I think it's worth checking out one of your bottles soon since you've got a few. Would love to hear what you think.

Initially muted and took about 90 minutes for it to open up. Mostly light spice and earth with a bit of dried dark cherry. Very good but not as exciting as hoped for.
  • bill00 commented:

3/22/21, 11:42 AM - 3rd bottle of 6 total that was bought on release by prior owner. Bottle was pristine. I've found '90 Roumier Bonnes Mares to be a bit moody as certain bottles hit very high highs and others are less giving. I've also consistently liked bottles of this less than the people I've had it with at the time (including on this occasion) so take that fwiw.

Unattractive warm roasted dark cherry. Noticeable alcohol heat. Drying tannins. Unpleasant and pretty close to undrinkable. Third bottle I've tried of this wine with consistent poor results.
  • bill00 commented:

3/17/21, 7:27 PM - It didn't register as heat damage to me (more just a not great wine as some other tasters below have seemed to experience as well), but it's certainly possible as I haven't had a good bottle of this to compare it to. Purchased from a trusted source several years ago, but given Accomasso's haphazard distribution it's hard to know for sure if this was perfectly temp-controlled every step of the way.

Another fantastic bottle. Beautiful aromatics with red fruit, light stem spice and minerality. Incredible finesse and delicacy. There's an effortlessness and beauty to this wine that is special and always grabs me. Everything is in the right place and in the right proportion. Love this.

2/5/21, 12:00 PM - Trying to get back in the note writing habit:)

Definitely love this one! I have a tendency to fall in love with certain wines and this is one of them, so there may be a little score inflation that may or may not translate for others. I'm curious to hear what you think when you taste it. Hope you love it too but even if you don't like it quite as much it's hard to go too wrong here as it's a relative bargain vs. other great '10 red burgs that are multiples of this price.

From magnum. Spectacular. Sweet lemon/lime custard with mineral and seashells. Incredible depth of fruit with perfectly balanced acid. Creamy. Seamless. Everything in the right place and right proportion. Favorite ‘96 champagne. Loved this.
  • bill00 commented:

1/18/21, 7:02 AM - A case of mags - that’s a treasure trove! As for it being like Raveneau Clos with bubbles, the creamy citrus custard type flavors are more dominant here but perhaps there’s an echo of it with that underlying minerality. In any case I hope it delivers for you like it did for me - that’s a lot of fun drinking ahead!

Two and a half years since my last encounter and this consistently shows to be the legend it is reputed to be. First glass after an hour decant and the nose is wafting with primary black and red fruit laden with highly expressive detail including subtle smoke, tobacco, red cedar, cigar box spice, and some graphite / lead. Definitely has a good bit of earth / forest floor influence but overall this is clean and fresh. A dark intense core suggets decades of longevity ahead but showing off sweet red fruit high notes too. Nose is just beautiful with big projection and the palate follows up with powerful red and black fruit and mostly completely resolved tannin, just a bit of grip hanging on in a good way, mostly texturally soft. Almost Burgundian in its effortlessly light handed delivery of powerful fruit. Only growing bigger with more air. Black cherry, chocolate covered cherries. Mouth coating and expansive with 60-second-plus staying power and lingering finish. Classic, refined. An image of beauty and a towering masterpiece.

Pretty different impression from prior bottles one and two years ago. I remember this having a ton of energy and thought it would be getting better with time, but if this bottle is representative it seems to have lost that energy quite quickly. Nutty, oxidative notes creeping in and the palate is just a touch soft and open-knit. A good wine, but not a great wine like previous bottles. Maybe just an off bottle or maybe it's not as great as I thought it would be as the youthful energy fades a bit. Recent notes from others here would suggest the former and hopefully that's the case.
  • bill00 commented:

3/26/16, 6:52 PM - Hi Seth - I did see your note and wish the bottle I had was as good as yours or the ones I had previously! Looking back at my purchase notes I realized that my first two tasting notes on this wine were from the 2 bottles I bought on release. I was so excited about the wine that I tried to find more and that more recent purchase must have been mishandled at some point. A recent disappointing bottle of '08 Les Barres that I had was from that purchase as well, which would help to explain why it wasn't as great as I would've expected.

This bottle just wasn't very enjoyable and not at all what I would expect from an '02 Mugnier Chambolle. Kind of musty but doesn't seem like TCA. No real fruit or charm here. Maybe an off bottle but just doesn't seem overtly flawed.
  • bill00 commented:

5/10/15, 1:30 PM - Thanks for the thoughts - I kept the open bottle and just revisited after seeing your comment. It's definitely not corked (musty is probably a bad descriptor to use for a wine that's not corked), oxidized or showing signs of poor storage which is what I generally think of as true bottle flaws. But it's not right and I agree that it doesn't seem representative which is why I withheld a numerical score. It may just be an elevated level of brett - the wine just seems masked/covered up and doesn't have the charm I would've expected.

Yeasty with some citrus and minerals. Fruit comes off as slightly underripe (maybe '11 base year?). Crisp and fresh with a rustic mousse. Relatively simple and straightforward. From 375ml. March '14 disgorge.
  • bill00 commented:

1/31/15, 4:30 AM - Disgorge date was on the back label right above the bar code. Obviously this bottle was a recent disgorge - could be that listing the disgorge date is a new thing for Peters and older bottles don't include it.

Fairly developed and open knit with roasted plum and autumnal forest floor notes. Not unpleasant, but definitely lacking energy and focus. I had pretty high expectations for this bottle as I generally really like the vintage, vineyard and producer but came away pretty disappointed. Hoping that it's just in a weird spot right now but I'm not too optimistic.
  • bill00 commented:

1/1/15, 2:07 PM - Yes, it does and I definitely agree with you that it doesn't seem like this needs time. It wasn't like it has huge structure and was closed and tight, it really just feels like it's fading and past prime. If it was blind I think I would've guessed either '97 or something much older. Definitely an outlier for me vs. other '01s. Oh well. This was the first of a handful of bottles so we'll see what happens over time.
