Bought on release and has been stored properly since. C: Still deep and dark with some bricking. N: Faint leather and dark berry with a slightly oxidized nose. P: More of the same with a moderate berry note and some oxidation. Not enough acidity to lift the dullness of the fruit. F: Medium and quite average. IMO, this is OTH and should be consumed now. I had the '10 version from this producer the next night and it simply blew the doors off of this.

Absolutely zero tertiary development in evidence here, though it’s not exactly primary. Given the unevenness in the palate, I’d say this is not really even in its drinking window—or it’s in a phase.

The pure red-berry and cedar nose was by far the best part of this wine. And it wasn’t a big concentrated bruiser of a wine, either. Lithe and fine boned is the best way to describe it. Taut, is another word that comes to mind because of its excellent structure. There was a thin layer of dusty tannins to melt away yet before the evidently very pure red fruits were going to fully and evenly reveal themselves on the palate, so in this respect, it was a bit unbalanced.

I will uncork this bottle relatively soon and give it a proper decant, but my guess is that I won’t touch my next bottle for another five years.

It’s not fair to rate this at this point. Today, I’d have to give it an 87/100, which isn’t fair to a wine that’s probably just not ready to drink. 13% ABV (not ready; no score)

I’ve always loved this wine but now bottle variation is an issue. This was the best bottle in a decade - perfect. Initial cedar and tobacco. Very smooth and rich mouthfeel with charcoal and black cherry finish. Fresh and moorish. When on-form, 85 is one of my favourite LLC vintages (with 61, 66 and 82). The 96 may get there one day… 96pts and at peak, drink to 2030

Fascinating to read all the notes - hold/don’t hold; decant/don’t decant; way too young/over the hill. So here’s my contribution to muddy the waters. Last bottle I had was almost two years ago and it outperformed this by a long way. On opening, the wine was fresh and alive - snappy acidity, bright red fruit, assertive tannin that yielded to an acidic, lengthy finish. Black tea and earth. I decanted for around five hours and drank with traditional Christmas Eve spaghetti. It was good, but it tasted a little tired alone, performed better with the acidic pasta sauce. Tasting the morning of day two and it’s softer and more elegant but finishes with some harsh acidity that fades into a lengthy and pleasant (if somewhat alcoholic) finish. This should clarify everything for everyone. Merry Christmas!

This was a fine wine but I really don’t understand all of the high scores - it was pretty disappointing for the price and reputation.

It looked the part with a dark, deep color and had both aroma and flavor of black fruits and graphite. But neither the aroma of flavor was particularly intense, the finish was medium+ at best and there was limited complexity and no tertiary flavors to speak of.

Maybe a bad bottle?

Tasted along side 2 other 2015 Cali Pinot’s…Hanzell and Aubert UV-SL. Decanted 2+ hours before tasting. This was beautifully balanced, bright with acidity as well as layers fruit and mineral flavors. Gorgeous translucent, medium ruby color. Cherry, baking spice, other red fruit like strawberry as well and a very long finish. Great mouth feel and texture. My favorite of the evening both on its own but especially with food, in this case grilled pork tenderloin. Really Lovely!

Good level.

Deep, deep colour. A wonderfully well-balanced wine with lots of lovely fruit, but also concentration and complexity, with just the right amount of tannin underpinning it. Fully mature, and delicious!

Opinions amongst the group varied as to which was the better wine: this, or the 1961 tasted alongside it. My view was that the 1961 would have been the greater of the two at its peak, because it had more complexity and heft, but I thought the 1982 was better for drinking now as the 1961 (at sixty years old!) was just a bit tired.

Tasted at the Winos’ Gruaud-Larose dinner, vintages 2002, 2000, 1999, 1996, 1990, 1986, 1982, 1975, 1973, 1967, 1961 (see reviews for the other vintages)

I have had an up and down experience with this wine. Earlier bottles were a disappointment. The last bottle was very good and lived up to the price point. This bottle was a little off from the last one. I seem to mostly have bad luck with Red Burgundies......as opposed to Red Bordeaux. I believe I am going to rely on Northern Napa and Oregon in the future for my PN needs.

It's been 5-yrs since I last had this... Decanted for ~4+ hrs by the time we got to it. Despite the decanting, this still showed some reduction/struck-match/flint when poured. With air (in glass) & more time, notes of white-flowers, ginger, cream started to show. Great yellow-fruit intensity with a fresh cut & brightness on the palate led guesses to anything but '09. This should be long-lived given the showing. Very good!

Bright crunchy fruit - red and blue with some citrus, purple florals and when swirled a savory smoked meat note? Comes out. Primary. Is that oak I smell? A bit of vanilla? Enters very young and almost seems to go ESJ-day1 sour, but the floral and vanilla notes save it. Wow, very savory on the midpalate - like licking granite - definitely lots of minerals. Could see this guessed as Cornas based on the palate. Finish is savory and minerals as well. There is a lot of good stuff here and I expect this to improve with air or decades in the bottle. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4.5+/6, 5+/6, 1.5/2 = 16+/20 (with 16.5-17.5/20 potential)

Next morning - while pouring, just a taste. This is really good now on nose and palate - very perfumed and floral.

Next evening (during blind tasting): This has really shut down in most ways and it hard to get anything from. Oh well, should have opened it in the morning and not the night before.

Initially very reductive on the nose and palate, with evident notes of flint and gunpowder on the nose. Felt like there was a veil between me and the real wine. Long finish, slight bitter note at the end.

After about 1.5 hours in the decanter, the wine started to shrug off the reduction, and gain more complexity.

All in all - very promising but in need of extended decanting.

Bordeaux 1982: not quite 40 years on (Chez Konstantina): I initially rated this higher than the Cos d'Estournel, tasted just before, but I give it the same score. Why? The next morning, with only about two serious sips of wine mixed with degraded tannin left in open bottles, the Cos seemed to have fared better. But this takes nothing away from the Gruaud, also still enjoyable the next morning. While enjoyed with roasted leg of lamb, the Gruaud gave off such a fine panoply of aromas, from floral to tobacco to graphite to blood orange. Its palate came across more full-bodied than the Cos and it seemed to have more grip. This morning, it still does, but I get a sense of brett that is stronger than it was last night. Anyway, an excellent 1982 to be sure!

Though the 82 Figeac’s palate has the usual cherry, tobacco, and loamy notes, the nose is quite reticent and it’s difficult to really enjoy this. Yes, there are some redeeming qualities on the palate, but this just isn’t that compelling.
  • melzar commented:

1/19/20, 9:06 AM - You clearly did a vertical tasting of Figeac. My wine club tasted eight examples from '82 to '15 in Sep 2019. We almost all rated the '82 last. Those of us who still had some in the glass at the end of the evening noted that the '82 had undergone a magical transformation, and after 3 hours, it might have been the favorite had we waited to score, or had decanted. I believe that, after pop and pour, the '95 was my favorite, followed closely by the 2000 and the '15. We did not taste the '98 or the "16. Glad I have it in my cellar.

This was delish at first with canned pear juice, lemon tart, and tons of reduction--aromatic glue kind of notes. Rich, creamy mouthfeel but somehow still light and balanced on the palate. But then the reduction hijacked this nice wine and almost buried it. After 40-50 minutes all I could taste was reduction. Which I like in small doses. Good with the scallops early on, but the Raveneau was a better pairing with more cut acidity.
  • melzar commented:

    12/10/19, 1:42 PM - Dear peternelson,
Glad someone finally noted the extreme reduction of this wine. I bought 6 bottles based on a very high Burghound score. I held off on opening my last three, hoping the reduction will diminish. I guess I'm overly sensitive to reduction, and indeed, many of my family members don't notice it at all. A little is OK,, but at this level, I consider it a fault.

Ruby with orange rim. This bottle is not flawed. The cork is in perfect shape. But the nose and palate indicate a wine that is far behind his peak, which is perplexing, given the performance of a bottle drunk on 6.11.2016., which was bought from the same merchant. Raisins, honey and some hints of broth. That's all and of course that is disappointing even though it is still drinkable and good and not oxidized, but nothing to really enjoy for a wine lover. Drink it up!

From WW, a recent acquisition. I was worried about this bottle although it appeared to be in good condition and previous bottles of other wines from this collection had been pristine. The color was good although definitely fading at the rim. But there was almost no aroma and I briefly considered that it might be corked. A small sip seemed not to be spoiled but rather almost mute. A sample left on the counter did improve slightly so I was feeling more confident. At the restaurant, in the Zaltos, though, a slow and miraculous transformation took place as if the heavens had parted and let the sun shine in. Little by little the gorgeous blueberry fruit came out and the regal character of mature Léoville las Cases was on full display. Moderately complex, but deep and profound, it was still on the way up after two hours. Great wine, very much in the voluptuous 1982 vintage style.

Finally I've seen what this wine has in store. Enjoyed in a vertical with plenty of decanting and multiple glasses. In a word - awesome. Initially incredibley tight to put it mildly - no nose, little mid-palate and no finish. No signs of age even. With air it developed massive intensity on a scale I've rarely seen and and 60 sec finish. The nose shows faint cedar and graphite but this is yet to really shine and needs another decade to develop the aromatic complexity that I seek in LLC. But this wine is finally getting ready to take centre stage... No other vintage compared to this. I was stunned. 99+pts and can drink from 2025 (maybe) or 2030 (probably).

No better riesling in the USA. I have had this bottle for about five years now. The amazing thing is that it doesn't taste like it's gotten any older - it's just even better. A knockout on the very first sip with a sizzling minerality of slate and gothic stone; I didn't know it was possible to get this kind of expression outside Germany. The style is a bone-dry GG style of riesling with acidity cutting like a samurai sword that would probably feel wincingly sharp if the wine weren't buzzing with so many other things going on. The fruit is pale and, like I said before, as fresh as a new release but calling it fruit at all may be stretching the concept, as it has the light and brightness of fruit but otherwise this wine is pure mineral, the flavors a study in stone and the texture like crunching on quartz crystals
  • melzar commented:
