Tonight this wine ran a bit hot, flat on entry, and a bit oaky on the finish. Decent fruit and mouthfeel but the balance was off. Clumsy and lacking integration this evening despite decanting. Hopefully this is not a representative bottle or simply entering a dumb phase. Third bottle from a case. Hold and hope?

10/25/15, 7:31 AM - The '08 while young has been great out of 375mL. I may have to unload my remaining from '07. Yikes.

2005 Antonin Guyon Chambolle-Musigny Pinot Noir

Wow. Silk and lace. Beautiful Chambolle. Soft elegant red fruits with great midpalate depth and a soft lasting finish. The nose is perfumed and floral and the aromas of mature, round, ripe red fruits is simply awesome. I had this wine a few years back when it was young, dumb, and tight. It has really transformed. After having a ripe 2009 earlier this evening, I hate to generalize but there truly is no comparison between these two vintages.

Even better on day 2 -- no rush to open this one.

2005 Domaine Joblot Givry 1er Cru Clos du Cellier Aux Moines Pinot Noir

Took the opportunity to taste this alongside the 2005 Joblot Clos de la Servoisine. The first bottle of the Cellier Aux Moines was sadly corked, but what can you do. The second bottle was fine. Both the Cellier Aux Moines and the Clos de la Servoisine both exhibited big grapey noses, although the nose on the Servoisine came off as a bit plummy, while the nose of the Cellier Aux Moines was a bit tighter with wisps of mineral and iodine. On the palate, it was quite difficult to differentiate between the two -- both showed soft fading dark fruit with secondary notes of forest floor and dirt, although the Cellier Aux Moines came off as the more coiled of the two. Unfortunately, both came off as flat, missing the fruit and acid that had been exciting in these wines' youths. I am hoping that perhaps these wines are both going through a dumb phase. Based on prior bottles, I had imagined that these wines would not lose their fruit for a long while -- perhaps I was mistaken?

Red
2006 Domaine Bruno Clavelier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d'Orveau Vieilles Vignes Pinot Noir

This was quite generous and primary on the nose, with aromas of crushed dark berries and a faint iron streak. On the palate, while so very primary, this came off as somewhat closed. With a few hours in the decanter, things opened up a bit, but this wine came off as such a youngster at a very awkward phase. Reminds me a bunch of the Vogue CM 1er Cru. Day two -- nothing doing, just shut down and grumpy. I'll forget about remaining bottles for at least 3-5 years before again trying. This is quite concentrated and there's a lot of raw material here -- certainly built for the long haul.

5/13/14, 5:36 PM - Hey Jonathan -- thanks for your comment. I love Clavelier, and his other '06s have been pretty good and wide open. Sad to have sacrificed this bottle but what can you do. I have the 2005 and 2010 as well -- they should drink well in about 10-20 years if the '06 is in fact a worthy yardstick. Cheers! Andy

Red
2011 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Vieille Vigne Pinot Noir

Was curious to try the 2011 GC VV having read the mixed reviews on this one. I have hesitated to buy significant quantities of the '11s until the verdict is out regarding the overall in-bottle greenness of the vintage. In fact, the only large buys I have made have been the Fourrier 2011s.

Clearly, there is bottle variation regarding this wine. Tonight, this wine is showing quite well if not outstanding. It has a cool perfumed red and blue fruit nose. On the palate, the dark. stony crushed red fruit is elegant, velvety, and somewhat feminine. It is balanced and long and simply wonderful. With time, the fruit began to come to the forefront, and the wine devolved to a more primary state. A bit atypical for this wine, it is not meaty, irony, or bloody. Moreover, there is nothing medicinal, green, or herbaceous. Sort of a 2009/2010 hybrid. Blindly, I might have guessed Volnay. Great juice. Decanted and tasted over about three hours.

3/23/14, 9:09 AM - Awesome juice. Had prepared for the worst, big surprise. I think we're all scarred from the '04 vintage.

3/23/14, 4:05 PM - If I had two bottles, I'd hold them for at least another 2-3 years. I had a six pack, so I thought I'd try a bottle in the name of science. While enjoyable, it's so primary and there's so much potential. I had a bit left and tried today on day 2, and the fruit is just so apparent in a 2009 kind of way. With some cellar time, this may outshine the 2006-2010 vintages of this cuvee.

N.V. Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Brut Champagne Blend

Nice mousse, yellow fruit nose, similar orchard fruit on the palate. A little too much dosage for me. Enjoyable nonetheless but not much more than that. From magnum, a recent release. I've had this a few times before from 1.5L where it has shown better.
  • BurgAndy commented:

12/23/13, 2:51 AM - Depends on the champagne and producer and if there's a disgorgement date available. I usually sit on the growers a bit -- in fact, I don't drink too much NV from the big houses. The mag of piper was purchased about 9 months ago. I'm less likely to hold very long if it's a blend of vintages rather than a "vintage" NV.

Red
2007 Camille Giroud Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines Pinot Noir
7/6/2013 - BurgAndy wrote:
Consumed over two days, this wine proved pretty closed and unyielding. By day two, however, the nose was a bit more open with aromas of tight and restrained young red fruit accented by a touch of wood, and the palate displayed tightly wound and compact red Gevrey fruit with flecks of spice. The tannins are sneaky and the structure is formidable and uncompromising in spite of the vintage. This needs time, say 3-5 years. Surprising as the CG 2007 Charmes I had a few weeks ago was so silky, sexy, and friendly.
  • BurgAndy commented:

12/21/13, 7:56 AM - Yes I was surprised by that. I've had the charmes a few times now and it's wide open. I have the '07 Vaucrains as well -- don't think I'll try that for a while.

2004 Domaine de L'Arlot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots Pinot Noir

Going through some of the 2004s that I have. Ah, ladybugs. Irony was that I have a few flying around the house for some reason. Very appropriate. Nice red color, soft red fruit and spice on the nose. Tastes of some red fruits, a touch of integrated wood, and some greenness. Good mouthfeel, enjoyable for what it is, tannins are soft without dryness. Ladybugs.
  • BurgAndy commented:

4/1/13, 4:33 AM - Yes, ladybugs. Sadly, some apparently made it into many a final red blend in 2004. Similar in 2011 I hear -- I'll be waiting to hear some in-bottle reviews for the 2011s before purchasing. It's that vegetal greenness -- maybe partially from picking to early as well. Some 2004s were just fine -- others, well, they really suffered. Alan Meadows has a great synopsis about the ladybug taint in the most recent issue of Burghound. See the link below for a real good discussion from the Burgundy Report:

2010 Jean-Claude Bessin Chablis Vieilles Vignes Chardonnay
8/24/2012 - BurgAndy wrote:
Another classic 2010 Chablis with a green, citrus iodine nose followed by a relatively dense midpalate exuding white fruit, rocks, apples, and seashell. A little short on the finish and overall length and not quite the level of the 2010 Picq VV, but still a great drink that screams Chablis. Problem for me is that the 2010 Bessin Valmur was such a knockout -- hard to follow up with this VV.
  • BurgAndy commented:

2/2/13, 4:55 PM - I think the 2010 Bessin VV Chablis is solid juice that'll only get better over the next year or two. However, it didn't impress me enough to buy more. At that price point, I prefer the VV Picq, the Picq premier crus, or Brocard's premier crus which come in around the same price more or less. I did think that the Bessin 2010 Valmur at $40 ish was a steal for the quality in the bottle -- and it'll age well too.
