Vertical tasting of Quilceda Creek (1999-2004)

Tasted January 27, 2008 by dsimmons with 983 views

Introduction

Vertical tasting of '99 to '04 QC. All wines were decanted for 7 hours before tasting. The wines were tasted blind. There were six tasters and the wines were accompanied by heavy hors d'oeuvres. I must say that this was a delightful tasting of 6 delicious wines. QC definitely lives up to their reputation. All of the wines were huge wines and it will be a delight to follow their development through the years.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

This wine is still young with lots of complexity and a long future ahead of it. Immense amounts of dark fruits and silky smooth texture. I grouped this wine with the '01 and '04, right behind the '02 and '03.

For me this was the weak sister of the tasting even though it is laughable to call this delicious wine weak in any meaningful way. The wine was delicious and a 95 pointer all day long, just not quite as packed as the others.

Again right behind the front runners and only by a half step. Just wonderful balance and the stuff to go for some time to come

This was my WOTN and hands down the best bottle of wine I have had. For my tastes everything was perfect. I have to believe that this kind of bottle simply makes you a better person. Bravo to QC.

This wine was actually tasted first and my reaction was WOW how can it get any better than this. What a delightful wine. Great balance, soft tannins, complexity with brooding power that will last for years.
Red
2004 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

This wine was the most different from the others, possibly because it is the youngest and is still resolving itself. The fruit was more jammy than the others.

Closing

Although the other tasters opinions varied from mine all agreed that the wines were otherworldly and some of the best in their experience. What a night!
