2005 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia

Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more

Compared this bottle with a '09 Muga Prado Enea over filet mignon. Double decanted both, but this one still felt young to me. It's sharper than the Muga with more acidity and less tannins. Not as dark red as the Muga with a touch of bricking around the edges. It developed nicely with an earthiness of saddle, dust and mushrooms. It has a youthfulness that should allow it to go many, many more years. Excellent with the filet. Both my wife and I leaned a bit toward the Muga, but perhaps we just need to try more Rioja to appreciate the old world vs. the new world styles.

Tasted both this bottle and a 2005 R. Lopez Vina Tondonia Reserve. I'm new to Rioja, so I wanted a new vs. old world style experience. Both were excellent in different ways. The Muga was big, dark and clearly oaky. Dark fruit, mushrooms and loads of tannin. It's a viscous wine that fully coats the mouth. Ate with a filet. I double decanted, but it still needed more time. Started to develop nicely after about an hour. Hard to say which one I like more, but leaning toward the Muga.

Lovely CDP. Aroma was earthy with some smoke and a gentle touch of flowers. Not a significant barnyard smell that I’ve come to enjoy with CDP, but enough to know what you’re about to drink. It’s a thick wine that coats your mouth. Tannins definitely build. Dark fruits pop that are balanced with a sharp metal taste that is pleasant along with spices like pepper and cumin. It’s a wine I highly recommend having with meat, preferable something gamy. I ate with a thick cut pork chop laced with a pepper/mustard sauce. The food tempers the sharpness allowing all the rich flavors to envelope the mouth. I love CDP and this one was excellent.

2012 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 40th Anniversary

Napa Valley more

My wife is a huge Caymus fan so I bought a case of this. Did not enjoy the overly sweet fruit extravaganza a few years back. Was hoping it would be a bit more approachable in time. It’s okay. Certainly not worth the cost, but my wife is enjoying it, so what the hell. Still too fruity. Overly ripe cherries and a syrupy sweet menthol flavors. A bomb on the tongue, but a touch more balanced now than a few years ago.

Drank at Prado Restaurant for an early Mother’s Day family dinner. Beautiful aromas of dark berries and a touch of vanilla and a hint of flowers. It’s drinking extremely well after popping the cork, but 30 minutes in the class took it to a perfect place. Full and luscious, it’s big but not overpowering. Tannins and fruit are balanced with a nice long lingering finish.

Medium to light in color with just a touch of bricking at the edge of the glass. The nose is quiet...not much there...a touch of earthiness is all I got. It drinks much better than it smells. It still has some tartness but is very well rounded. I don’t want to say “silky” but it is certainly smooth. Hints of dark fruit and a touch of leather. Nice.

Surprisingly big wine. The CT drink window has it drinking through 2016, but I think this can go a several more years. I’d like to try it in 2020 to see its evolution. It’s color is rich and deep in the glass. The nose is dark fruit, wood and a touch sweet...almost like honey. It’s a lucious and full wine with far more tannis than I expected. Others have mentioned it’s overdone and that’s certainly not an unfair view. It’s oaky, but also delicious. I agree it’s a wine to enjoy with food. For the price point, I think Brancaia makes a nice bottle of wine.

I was surprised how young this wine was after tasting. It’s big with plenty of fruit...cherries, dried raspberry, floral accents and a touch of menthol. A bit acidic with more tannins than I expected for a 1999. After two hours it opened up a bit, but still felt tight. The finish was long and lucious. I’m going to save my other bottle for another five years.

Just a beautiful Chard. Well balanced between oak and acidity although a bit more oak than some other Kistlers. The finish is slow and long. Citrus and pear with some flowers and wet stone. Absolutely gorgeous. Great bottle of wine.

Still a fairly big wine. Had with dinner at Prado on Larchmont. Beautiful wine with relatively smoothed out tannins. Hints of lead, chocolate and dark berries. Reasonably long finish. High alcohol which you can feel, but a worthy California Cab. My wife loved it.

Earthy nose with plenty of fruit. Modest tannins. Hints of leather and tobacco on the nose with slight alcoholic heat, but not much. Solid finish. Better than I expected. Could still go several more years. Gave a taste to my 16 and 13 year old boys... “Tastes like wine, Dad.” I guess I shouldn’t have expected anything else.

Big bold wine. Decanted for an hour plus, but took a small pour before decanting. That first mouthful was lean and lacked complexity. The hour plus really improved the wine. Deep blood red color that was truly opaque. Plenty of dark fruit and chocolate on the nose with hints of vanilla and earth with nice tannins. Very full bodied and one of the better Isosceles Reserves I've tasted. My wife thought it was the best she's ever had and although I wouldn't go that far (the '01 was a better wine IMHO) it was a delicious, long finishing bold and chewy wine. I've always been a fan of Justin and this bottle was no exception.

Had two bottles with Easter brunch of leg of lamb and rosemary oven browned potatoes. First bottle decanted for only 30 minutes--not long enough. Although it wasn't bad, it was tight and stiff. Deep purple and looking very young in the glass. Nose of dark fruit and some leather and coffee. The second bottle sat for over an hour--vastly improved. It really blossomed in the glass. Still dark purple, nearly black in the glass, but more spice on the nose than bottle one. It was complex with a long and succulent finish. Smooth and velvety on the tongue. Next time around, will let it sit for several hours. Should last a lifetime.

Incredible nose of wet wood, red apple skins, spice, with a very slight floral hint. Creamy and delicious in the mouth with lots of depth and complexity. Flavors of apple, redwood, spices, black cherries and earth. Drank with an impressive variety of French and Spanish cheese. Truly a sultry and embracing wine. I don't think anyone can go wrong with the 1970 Fonseca.

2002 Elizabeth Spencer Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Tasted at Greenblatt's in Los Angeles along with nine other red wines. Of all ten, this was my third least favorite. It looked pretty good in the glass, a nice ruby red/purple color with good opacity. Immediately the nose had a strong stewed tomato scent which wasn't terribly pleasant. It had decent fruit on the tongue with hints of blackberry, raspberry, but the stewed tomato taste ruined the experience. It certainly could have been a bad bottle, but I hadn't tasted the Eliz. Spencer before so I can't be sure. I've heard good things about this producer so I'm hoping it was a bad bottle and not the wine.

Tasted at Greenblatt's in Los Angeles. Terrific merlot. I'm not a big merlot drinker, but I'd definitely drink this again. Lots of good dark fruit on the nose. It was dark purple and viscous in the glass. The taste was fabulous. Very fruity with an excellent balance of tannin. It had a very silky quality and a nice finish. It seemed like a high quality merlot and drank very well. Tasted a total of ten wines this evening and the Duckhorn was my favorite of the lot.

Tasted two additional bordeaux, Branda and Esprit l'Eglise, along with the Larruau at Greenblatt's in Los Angeles. The Larruau was definitely my favorite of the three. In the glass it had a nice dark purple color, not too viscous, and moderate translucence. The nose was more akin to a classic bordeaux than the other two. Hints of dark fruit, spice, and a very nice earthy, dusty scent. In the mouth is had very nice blackberry, black cherry flavors along with earthy and very subtle spicy tones. The tannin was very well balanced almost to the point that it didn't seem to have any. For the price, it was a very nice wine. Would definitely recommend this over the other two.

Tasted the Esprit l'Eglise along with two other bordeaux, Branda and Chateau Larruau, at Greenblatt's in Los Angeles. The Esprit was my least favorite wine of the three and my least favorite wine of the evening (ten wines total). The nose was stiff, hot and almost airplane glue-like. The color was a transparent purplish red, but not bad. I waited for the glue smell to blow off, but even after a half an hour it was still present. You could taste some fruit such as blackberry, but it was difficult to find masked behind the glue taste. The finish was average and would have preferred it to be swift. I wouldn't recommend this one. At the price point, the Larruau was head and shoulders above it.

Tasted at Greenblatt's in Los Angeles along with two other bordeaux, Esprit De L'eglise and Chateau Larruau. The Branda was in the middle of quality, complexity and taste. First impression was black cherry and spice bouquet and color was not very rich. Tannin was high, but not overwhelming. The finish was somewhat short. It was fun and interesting to compare the three bordeaux from three different regions.

Decent nose of black cherry and some earthy scents. Some good fruit in the mouth but, lots and lots of tannin. Needs quite a bit more cellar time. Only drank half the bottle the first night and drank the rest the day after, which really allowed it to open up. Still lots of tannin, but seemed to even out just a bit.

Fantastic cab even in its youth. I was surprised at the complexity of such a young cab. Excellent nose of licorice and dark fruit. Let it decant for about 45 minutes and it really was superb. Served with leg of lamb and oven browned Greek style potatoes. The wine was brought over by James P. I heard it is not actually Screaming Eagle, nor is it made by them. Nevertheless, it could have fooled me. I plan on purchasing some soon. A great wine, great meal and great friends. That's living.

Had an awesome dinner at Campanile in Los Angeles on 4/29/05 accompanied by two bottles of the '97 Moccagatta. It was a delicious wine with the meal, Kansas City steak med. rare, pomme fritte, and saute' of spinach. Very deep in color, a relatively subtle nose of dark fruit and smokey flavors. It may have been a bit young, but IMHO it was overrated for the price. Of course, it's a restaurant price. This barbaresco may leave a better impression on me in another five to ten years. Still worth tasting.

Decanted for two hours. Interesting, but not overly complex although the two hours opened it up nicely. Good fruit, strawberries and a hint of cherries and the time open released some nice earthy almost dusty (in a good way) flavors. Did not find the finish abrupt, yet it didn't linger as long as I would have liked. Drank with my older brother who was out visiting which added to it's enjoyment. For $17 I would definitely recommend it as a solid Pinot.
