2020 Latta Grenache Upland Vineyard

Yakima Valley Snipes Mountain more

5/8/2024 - JShipman Likes this wine: NR

Silky smooth and easy to drink yet has layers and a bright finish. Would pair well with poultry, light pasta, or a leaner cut of beef like a New York strip.

Our Upland Grenache is a silken mix of red fruit and wild herbs. This brilliant ruby wine opens with wild strawberry, rosemary, and cardamom accents. The expansive palate is deeply saturated with lengthy soft tannins. Long maceration with 50% stems and 50% whole berries lends wildness to those aromatics and length to the finish. This 100% Grenache is aged in neutral 500L puncheons for 22 months before bottling.

Upland Vineyard is a rolling, extremely sloped site located in the Snipes Mountain AVA. Snipes Mountain was named for Ben Snipes, an early Yakima County pioneer who built a house at the base of a mountain in the 1850s. The area was first planted in 1917 by Washington State wine trailblazer William B. Bridgman. The vineyard on Snipes Mountain was one of the first to plant Vitis vinifera in Washington. Snipes Mountain is a seven-mile-long anticline ridge created by fault activity. The "peak" is 1,290 feet high, rising from the floor of the Yakima Valley with unique, rocky soils. Soil deposits below the area are composed of gravels and sediments left by ancient riverbeds, deposits range in size from a fist to a football. A truly unique site in Washington and a standout for Grenache.

very impressive southern France grenache (Minervois) vibrant playful cherry, pom, garrigue and orange peel, pleasing persistent finish. This I dare say, is a serious wine.

This was pretty closed at first but with air it started to show floral notes, wild strawberries, and sweet fruit. Well balanced with good depth on the palate, ripe fruit, and maybe a hint of plums. It picked up aromatics and lift with air. Long finish. A gorgeous wine, although not quite as good as the last bottle I had. In this tasting a small but noticeable step up from the Pignan.

A big step up from the 2001 Tours Vacqueyras. Very pretty nose with lots of cherries, a hint of strawberries, and spices. The palate is also very fruit driven with more cherries and strawberries, noticeable structure, and a little sweeter fruit, especially when compared to the Rayas. Nice finish.

Quite big and muscular and may struggle to pick it as Grenache at this stage, however does have good acidity to balance things out and drinking well now but still a fair bit of upside I think.

Sweet fig, brandy, leather, black tea. Very ungrenache like. Heavy and sweet.
More Zin and Old Fashion cocktail than Grenache. Big and oozy, boozy, sweet and gloopy.
The ‘21 was more restrained. How did it get to this point? Disappointing Turley.
Day 2 is a little better, but this wine seems loaded with residual sugar. Drinks almost like a cordial.

This needs a couple years. Dark red and black fruits, baking spices, milk chocolate, chewy tannins that are a bit pervasive right now. There is upside here after some time.

Keep bringing me any cooler vintage CDPs you have. Really excellent wine from a producer I was aware of but had never had until now. Drank over the course of 2 hours while decanted. Much Provençal charm here both in the bouquet and on the palate. A little strong at first but within 20 minutes it hit its stride. Very well balanced, tannins well integrated and tender fruit.

Ripe dark fruit. Pure with lots of depth. Fully resolved tannins produce a very smooth finish. The fruit is starting to fade, on the downslope.

Red fruits with a combination tart freshness but also slight syrupyness. Definitely a jubey lolly character, eminds me of strawberry jam and raspberry cordial. Iron ore on the nose as well as a slight hint of something clinical or plastic, not sure if that's from carbonic maceration or something else.
I don't get a lot of oak influence but very grippy fruit tannins and high acidity. Definitely whole bunch fermented.
Not bad but I don't love it. I think this got very positive reviews and I'm not seeing that at this stage.
