2009 Dobbes Family Estate Pinot Noir Youngberg Hill Vineyard
McMinnville
more
|
This wine was excessively tannic without anything interesting to balance the tannins. Because I so enjoy Dobbes wines I held on to a couple fo bottles for several years thinking that at some point the tannins would soften and reveal something worth enjoying. Sadly, this wine never had any sort of peak. Rather, it just got old. Dobbes only made this for two years. after that it was replaced by the Momtazi from the McMinnville sub AVA which is a substantially better wine.

OMG! This was amazing, and a reminder of why we age wine. When you first put this in your mouth you for a brief moment thing the fruit might overwhelm you. Not so! It is immediately restrained to glide to the back of the palette where you still get a touch of acid (i.e. peppery finish). I would not say it is overly complex, but it is so balanced that it is pure joy. If you have any of this it is time to drink it.

2019 Corazon del Sol Grenache Block 13 Revana Vineyard

more
|
Being a club member at Alexana Estate Winery I have tasted several different Corazon del Sol wines since Dr. Revana also owns this winery in Argentina. This is certainly one of my favorites. What I love about this Grenache is that the fruit explodes as soon as it enters your mouth but then is almost immediately balanced by a strong acid finish as it crawls down the side of your tongue. Love this experience! Got to taste this wine as part of the portfolio tasting at Alexana today (tasting at all three of Dr. Revana's wineries - Revana in Napa, Alexana in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, and Corazon del Sol in Argentina) and had to take home a few bottles.

2017 Dobbes Family Estate Viognier Sundown Vineyard
Rogue Valley
more
|
From the winery:
Dobbes Family Estate was the first in Oregon to produce Viognier. This unique, white Rhône varietal is grown by our longtime friends and growers, the Moore Family, in Southern Oregon's Rogue Valley.
GROWING SEASON The 2017 Rogue Valley growing season began with bud break in the first 10 days of April. Bloom occurred during gorgeous weather in the first week of June, resulting in above average crop levels. Crop loads were thinned in July at véraison to ensure slightly above average yields. An overall warm growing season and easy harvesting conditions resulted in fantastic quality fruit from all our Rogue Valley vineyards.
WINEMAKER’S NOTES Luscious aromas of flowers and stone fruit blend with vanilla, beeswax and lemon curd. The wine opens with a full bodied entry punctuated with fresh acidity, a round mid-palate, and flavors of golden raspberry, citrus and lychee. 15% new French oak adds a touch of vanilla and nutmeg spice, helping to build complexity. This full-bodied white wine can pair with everything from clam chowder to pork roast – don’t be afraid to go bold!

From the winery:
Dark fruits, notably blackberry and black cherry, are hallmarks of this low-elevation, 35-acre site. Impeccable balance characterizes Domaine Serene Pinots, this being no exception, but here there is a bit more juicy power, more earthy punch to the tannins, and a nice finishing touch of chocolate.

2010 Vineyard of Pasterick Syrah
Dry Creek Valley
more
|
From the winery:
Our 2010 Estate Syrah is red black with deep dark color tints. The nose has powerful and intense aromas of ripe, black fruits, olive notes and asian spices. This wine is supple with balance between the finesse of the aromas and an explosive richness of flavor. Overall the 2010 Estate Syrah is structured, concentrated with a silky texture and a long intense finish.
Hand harvesting began at 2 am on October 3 and was completed by mid-morning. Immediately after crushing our Syrah about 3% Viognier was added to each open top fermentor. We cold soaked the two grapes for 96 hours, then inoculated with ‘syrah’ yeast isolated in the Rhone Valley. The co-fermenting Syrah/Viognier wine was hand punched three times a day then basket pressed between October 16 and 20 into Taransaud 400 liter French Oak puncheons. The 2010 Estate Syrah received its oak upbringing until August 22, 2013 when it was bottled unfined and unfiltered with a TA of 0.60, ph of 4.12 and alcohol of 15 1/2%. 564 cases of 750ml bottles were produced along with 12 cases of magnums.

2012 Fox Farm Vineyards Syrah
Rogue Valley
more
|
Fox Farm's approach to winemaking in general is to make everything as light and elegant as they can. This includes their Syrah although I am not sure it always works. Once they get a little time in the bottle the Syrah seems to flex its muscle.
Here are the winery tasting notes:
Fox Farm Vineyards’ Willamette wines are delicate and feminine, but our Rogue Valley reds show no such restraint. The warmer climate south of Medford provides sites with the ability to very fully ripen, and to make wine with meaty, smoky, masculine aromas- but which still keep the higher-toned acidity for which we are known.
Adding 1% Viognier is a step to intensify and lock in color, and it gives a faint whisper of floral tones to the aromatics. As an unusual opinion, many have said that this wine tastes like Syrah, but that it feels like Cabernet Sauvignon.
17 months of oak aging, with 40% new oak certainly adds a layer of structure and medium tannins to the bright aromatic core of black fruit and smoke. 119 cases produced.

2012 Pillsbury Symphony Symphony Goddess
Cochise County
more
|
From the winery:
Aromatic and fruity with a crisp acidity, this mutation of Grenache Gris and Muscat makes for a delicious white wine reminiscent of Conundrum in its off dry, fruit-forward approach.
Symphony is a Californian crossing of Muscat of Alexandria and Grenache Gris developed in 1948 (but not commercially released until 1982) by the late Harold Olmo, professor of viticulture at the University of California, Davis. As its pedigree suggests, it is an aromatic variety with slightly spicy flavors.
Symphony is mostly used in white-wine blends, where it contributes to the aromatic profile of the final product. A few varietal examples of Symphony are made in California, typically produced as off-dry or late-harvest wines.
The variety was originally intended as a grape suitable for the hot Central Valley but there, and elsewhere in California, growers enjoyed only limited success with it. It is now cultivated mainly in the inland Lodi and Sierra Foothills regions.
Food matches for Symphony include:
Smoked salmon terrine with dill and lemon Corn fritters with salsa verde Buffalo chicken wings

2016 Dobbes Family Estate Syrah Sundown Vineyard
Rogue Valley
more
|
From the winery:
DESCRIPTION Sourced from a 19 acre site in Southern Oregon's Rogue Valley, this single vineyard Syrah is full-bodied, structured, and opulent. Bursting with intense dark fruit and complexity; it is a natural companion to frilled or smoked meats. Enjoy!
TASTING NOTES Of all the Rogue Valley vineyards we work with, Sundown Vineyard consistently yields an opulent style of Syrah that is full bodied and structured, with moderate tannins and generally soft acids. It’s a style that can stand up to a lot of new oak barrel aging, but can also shine perfectly well on its own with no new oak barrels as in this 2016 vintage. Vibrant, ripe fruit aromas of red plum and Marionberry transition to cherry cordial and blueberry pie, highlighting the value of a versatile vineyard. The 40% 3rd fill barrels add integrated toasted oak notes of vanilla and caramel with spicy accents of cedar and sandalwood. A bright, lively entry opens the palate with juicy, forward acidity. Flavors of dark fruit found in plum and fig take the lead with support from herbal sage and floral violet. A long finish is framed with age-worthy tannins and carried with youth preserving acid.

2016 Trattore Farms Roussanne
Dry Creek Valley
more
|
From the winery:
TECHNICAL DETAILS
Varietal: 95% Roussanne, 5% Viognier Appellation: Dry Creek Valley Alcohol: 14.20% TA: 0.62 g/100ml ph Level: 3.35 Fermentation: Native yeast fermentation, partial malolactic fermentation Harvest Date: 09/26/2016 Aging: 8 Months | 95% neutral oak, 5% new French oak Case Production: 301 Cases Winemaker: Kerry Damskey
Roussanne has an intense aromatic profile, but can often lack in texture. To compensate for this, we fermented the majority of the Roussanne in neutral French oak barrels. This causes integration of oak tannins that boost the wine's body. This effect is further enhanced by the use of new French oak, so we used 5% new oak on this wine, which really gave us the texture and complexity we were looking for! Keeping that new oak percentage down minimizes the oak influence on the aromatic profile, allowing the fruit to shine. The result was a complex wine that retained the beauty and elegance of Roussanne, with more mid-palate than you often find with this variety.
Best of Class and Gold, 91 points: Los Angeles International Wine Competition 2018 Gold: San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition 2018 Best of Class and Gold: Sonoma County Harvest Fair 2017 Gold: International Women's Wine Competition 2017
TASTING NOTES
An exceptional addition to our Rhone-inspired whites. Aromatic and complex with a pleasant bouquet of fresh flowers and honey-drizzled melon on the nose. Presents ripe notes of apricot and peach on the palate, balanced by hints of pepper and a compelling minerality with rich, oily texture lightly speckled with toasted oak.
Pair with seafood dishes such as scallops, lobster, crab, and cod or serve alongside seafood pasta with white wine cream sauce.
