2018 Marchesi de' Frescobaldi Tenuta di Castiglioni Toscana IGTSuperTuscan Blend more |
5/24/2024 - wahoo70 Likes this wine: 91 pointsA bright, fruity, easily accessible super Tuscan (for us new world fans). Lovely aromas and flavors of tasty black and purple cherries and berries, flowers, some darkness and touch of oak, all well-balanced with bracing acidity and smooth tannins; long finish, with fruit holding to the end. A nice sipper, but even better with food. |

5/20/2024 - wahoo70 Likes this wine: 91 pointsAgree with the pro reviews - a wonderful example of a Paso wine at a fair price. Opaque dark purple color (mostly petite syrah); intense nose of blue and black fruit, blueberries in particular, darker spices, a splash of oak; lush, generous, full-bodied darker fruit flavors, well-balanced by smooth tannins, and a long, zippy finish. A surefire crowd pleaser. |

A style of super Tuscan more to my liking than many. Still needs a lot of time to open up, and much better with food. |

5/14/2024 - wahoo70 wrote: 88 pointsMerlot and cabernet sauvignon. Notes from Day 2 (give it time to open!). Quiet nose with some fruit and lots of darkness (phenolics, earth, umami?); a bit tart at first, very dry, not a lot of fruit, more darkness, and some interesting flavors (lychee?); a nice, long, zippy finish, again dry and with firm tannins. Not a great sipper, needs food. Highly regarded by many, clearly well made, but not the style for me. Agree with Tomoem that it's not ready yet. |

5/10/2024 - wahoo70 wrote: 87 pointsFirst wine with the sagrantino grape. NOT a pop and pour - took three hours to start finding its footing. This could explain the poor scores on VVino and wine.com. Notes are from day 2. Quiet fruit-driven nose; soft, fruit-forward (red and purple) flavors and texture, well-balanced with acidity and mild tannins; nice, long zippy finish. Not bad, but I think one can do better for the price. |

5/8/2024 - wahoo70 wrote: 90 pointsOur house red when family comes over for dinner. Always popular and a terrific value. This has fruit forward (Paso) aromas and flavors of cherries and berries, with some darker phenolic/umami-ish and greenish notes in the background, well-balanced with a touch of acidity and smooth tannins; lovely, long finish. A great PnP, terrific sipper and even better with food. |

5/5/2024 - wahoo70 wrote: 91 pointsMerlot, cab franc, cab sauvignon. A lovely super Tuscan from Bolgheri (DOC) in a delicious new worldish style. Big, enticing nose with lots of fruit and some darkness as well; fruit forward up front, on the redder side, with smooth tannins and a bit of acidity for balance, carrying well into a long zippy finish, with smooth tannins and some darkness at the end. A great sipper, and even better with food - great with pizza. |

5/2/2024 - wahoo70 wrote: 85 pointsQuiet nose; fairly tart red and purple fruit, modest tannins, not doing much through a rather short finish, dominated by tannins and acidity. Hard to tell it's a Ripasso style. Not for me. |

4/29/2024 - wahoo70 wrote: 90 pointsAn easy drinking, fruit forward red - not quite a fruit bomb. Pretty nose with dark fruit and a touch of vanilla; a blast of straightforward dark fruit (bombish) into the midpalate, but then a surprisingly long, zippy finish, with tons of fruit balanced by bracing tannins and acidity. The finish alone is worth a couple of points. Super value for the price, and a likely crowd pleaser. Good but nothing special as a pop and pour, but the complexity really came through on days two and three in the bottle. Give it plenty of time after opening. |

4/27/2024 - wahoo70 wrote: 87 pointsDecent nose with dark fruits and licorice; not too dry, with plenty of acidity to balance the cherries and berries; decent finish with lots of tannins and ample fruit. Definitely needs a long time after opening to settle down. Nice enough, but questionable qpr - nothing special for that price. |

4/24/2024 - wahoo70 wrote: 89 pointsSpicy, peppery fruit forward nose, with a touch of sweet oak; soft, tangy, fruit forward in the mouth, with more of that spicy, peppery cab franc influence leading into a nice fruity, peppery finish, balanced by smooth tannins. An easy-drinking sipper, and even better with the right food - it went really well with wife's Mexican-style cheesy chicken, beans and rice dish. |

4/20/2024 - wahoo70 wrote: 88 pointsMuted nose, with darker fruit, umami and a touch of sweet oak; bone dry, with darker fruit and umami in the background, building nicely into an intense, impressively long, bone dry finish, tannins to the front and flavors in the background. It's rated highly by others, but it's a bit too dry and old world for my palate. |

4/16/2024 - wahoo70 wrote: 88 pointsA purple black cherry vanilla fruit bomb. The soft, almost sweet mouth-filling blast of fruit and vanilla does carry though nicely into a fairly long finish, where some tannins surface along with butterscotch (in a red!). My wife, who dislikes dry red wines in general, loved this, suggesting that it could be a popular wine for a backyard barbecue. |

4/14/2024 - wahoo70 Likes this wine: 91 pointsNotes are from second day in the bottle - it took that long to settle down and show its stuff. Lovely nose, with red and purple fruit, flowers, raisins, a touch of umami; a blast of darker fruit in the mouth, but well balanced by acidity and tannins; brilliant midpalate into the finish, with dry fruit and ample tannins, and a note of tomato paste at the very end (thank you Jason Wu for this). Per Jason: old world + new world - what I love in a super-Tuscan. I'm very fond of red blends where merlot plays a major role. |

4/10/2024 - wahoo70 wrote: 90 pointsA house wine - blend of petite sirah and zinfandel, two of my favorites. PnP. Clear, dark purple (ps) color; luscious nose, with black currants and cranberry sauce, with a touch of baking spice and earthy black notes; luscious, jammy blue and purple fruit with more earth and spice, well-balanced by acidity and tannins, building towards a long, fruit-driven finish, with more earth and firm tannins. Serious wine, well priced and widely available. |

4/9/2024 - wahoo70 wrote: 88 pointsAgree with other reviewers that it's just not quite in balance yet. Clear dark red purple color; pretty nose of dark fruit, some earth, spice and a touch of sweet oak; a real mouthful, but heavy on acidity and tannins and a bit light on the dark fruit; long bone dry finish, again light on the fruit. It needs lots of time to open, and not surprisingly it's much better with food. |

Well made, but just not my style. |
