2013 Blankiet Estate Rive Droite

Napa Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/10/2024 - MJP Hou TX Likes this wine: 93 points

Motivated by Vinous new article on 2012 & 13 Napa revisited, I pulled a bottle to check in.

13 has always been a bit of an oddball for Rive Droite. Lighter and bit more pinot in depth than any other vintage. I find it very enjoyable if looking for something on the lighter side of delivery.

I think this has a little more runway than Galloni.

5/13/2024 8:33:00 PM - Nice note on this one. I've only had the '15, which I gave a 94, to. Felt like it should have been a little better but also felt it was young and needed more time.

A wonderful surprise brought over by a good friend that bought a case of his vintage years ago at the request of an Oil minister of a small country in Africa. The story of the motivation to purchase this wine decades ago was as interesting as the wine itself. This was the last of his stash and he was kind enough to share this over dinner.

I have little experience with wines of this age but I have a feeling after this I'll be seeking out more as 78 Cakebread was so unique and beautiful to drink.

Weightless silky tannins with the slightest touch of fruit still left washed the palate with each sip. Medium Garnet in color with the slightest bricking on the edges. Dried red fruits.

Just lovely.

If I remember correctly it was like $75 and you got to taste a '75, an '86? and maybe a '95? All under argon in a special tasting room. I was amazed at how the '75 was still doing well in spite of its very aged/lighter color. It's the one I remember the most. Never had a '77.

PNP, consumed over 3 days.

This bottle is just getting started. I'm going to hold back my other two for the long haul. Mataro dominated blend (I think) which is why I love this wine. Excellent with a rack of lamb.

I am disappointed that I opened this. Had a Latour version of Les Gouttes a few months ago that was unexpectedly and lifechangingly good. This bottle was very austere and closed. Needs time to develop. Or something.

I cannot believe I did this again. Planned to drink the 2016 after all the amazing reviews. Only just noticed today as I went to clear up the bottle and write. Note—I had pulled the ‘15
Explains why I was having such a different experience to the others who had posted notes on the ‘16.
That said, I still really loved this wine. Not for every day. It is incredibly savory with olives and meat and herbs, and the fruit is in the background. It went very nicely with roast lamb. Saved 4 ozs in an airtight glass bottle and forgot about it for 5 days, but surprisingly even better. So open and full bodied with more plummy fruit coming through to balance the savory. It had also lost the smoky tarry notes which I found interesting but took away from the pleasure.
Don’t be afraid to give this one a multi-day decant. Original decant was 6 hours and that wasn’t enough to get the best version of this wine.
But regardless, my FRUITY friends (and you know who you are) will hate this whether decanted properly or not!

So Bordeaux like I really think I would have been fooled if blind. Slight funk on the nose, dark fruits and slate on the palate. Long finish. Even better with food and would never have guessed 2017.

Took to Florida to drink with Mark1npt & Carol. Has lost of that sweet over ripeness now. It’s declining now and I’ll drink my last bottle tonight with friends. Solid 93 but over shadowed by many better wines that night.

Same as previous reviews but with 45 minute decant and drank over another 45 minutes with rack of lamb with a chili brown sugar rub. Lots of structure and good tannins but not too strong. Blue and black fruits. Great extraction. Not too ripe. Great CA Cab.

Drinking beautifully now. Lovely fruit, good balance, medium long finish, tannins resolved, no sharp edges anywhere in sight. We finished this bottle within 2 hours after opening; I didn't think it was evolving much in the last 30 minutes. Not sure there's much upside to waiting to drink additional bottles.

PNP. Deep dark magenta color. Chocolate malt, blackberry, dark raspberry, crème fraiche, wild strawberry, and fennel. Smooth, dry palate. Firm tannins on the longish finish.

Shared this with friends and it drank really well with no aeration. It has aged nicely, but perhaps lost a small step (for me). My friends thought it was WOTN.

One hour decant. Deep dark, yet bright, magenta color. Blueberry pie and milk chocolate are the dominant notes. Smooth, dry palate, with satiny acidity. Full tannins on the longish finish.

Good, stereotypical Napa CS. Surprisingly simple, but certainly an easy drinker. Enjoyed at Luke in New Orleans.

This has a terrific nose. Drinks like a CS, which is typical of thicker skinned “mountain Merlot”.

I have been a big fan of the regular Napa bottling, but had yet to crack one of their single vineyards. Popped this on Mother's Day, and gave it 2 hours of air. While the NVD is drinking beautifully with little airtime, this is clearly a different beast and would benefit from more bottle age. Still fairly "boozy" and tannic on the back end. It opened a bit more on day 2, but still a bit coiled.
The wine has great density and textural richness in the mouth, loaded with cassis, black raspberries and blackberries. there is a nice line of minerality on the mid palate and finish, hints of wild flowers, and bitter chocolate.
I'll check in on my next bottle in 1 -2 years

From 375ml, was sitting all dinner and thinking wow is the 2011 drinking like this all of a sudden. I have to buy more. The day after I realised I had opened a 2010. A couple of points ahead of the 2011 and an amazing QPR-wine. So vibrant, silky, and simply delicious. This is wonderful now and will be wonderful for many, many years to come. Decant for 2 hours.
