Definite meniscus but dark garnet in the glass. P&P, notes are from the second day after it sat in my passive cellar overnight. Purchased on release. This wine is all about finesse and balance, just so tasty from the first sip. Nose of black fruit. Black fruit, some underbrush (as BRR noted), and olive in the mouth, and some fine tannins on the finish. Enjoyed it most while pairing with different foods.

Bafflingly mace and nutmeg heavy on opening, little else. Eventually opens up with leather, strawberry and an almost Barolo like tar. Bitter chocolate on the finish. Returning five hours later, I see little improvement.
Clearly opened very early but even so, very unforgiving and rather lacklustre.

(Before you all have a strop, I use much more of a score range than your redundant 89-95)

2/11/2024 1:42:00 PM - 58 is undrinkable. I assume you tossed most of this?

I too use the full scale but after reading all your notes do not think you are applying the excellent (90+), very good (85-89), good (80-84), average (70-79), has a significant flaw (60-69), and flawed (50-59) scale as I would, nor as I learned the scale. The last wine I rated in the 50's had smoke taint.

It would be helpful to know whether you decant or not.

Also, unforgiving and lacklustre are almost opposites - like "hard" and "flabby".

Classy, soft, and elegant. This is already drinking in a very sweet spot. Amazing how open this wine is at this young age. Very well balanced between fruit and a deep mineral core, the wine shows black plums and sweet blueberry, bathing in graphite and earth. A well made and soft haut Bailey, very reminiscent of the 2000 at release. Drink or Hold

Flawed. Cork was very dry and wine was oxidized, all stewed and over-ripe fruits. Nice color, but very distinct meniscus at the rim of the glass.

The price sucked me in on a Garagiste offer, and the fact that the grapes came from Oregon did as well. The good news is that there was no smoke taint. Sadly, for me it had the classic Wa. chard pear and apple, flabbiness, and simplicity that I have come to expect from home-grown chard. Good, but there is so much better available.

No decant. Medium garnet, small but distinct clear meniscus at the rim. On the first sip, some sweet cherry, but lots of tar and mineral takes over. Good acidity shows, it really sings with cheese. Some drying tannins on the finish are noticeable, especially on day 2. Have 6, thought it time to try.

14.5% vol
Very near opaque

Compact, deep, youthful nose. Notes of tar and coal, very black fruit focused. Lovely freshness, and it feels plenty cool, with a touch of mulch, black cherry and raspberry notes.

The palate has an incredibly layered silky quality, great focus, intensity and concentration. That stony backbone is there, along with gravelly minerals. Dense and rich with good lift and freshness, super fruit levels, but the pleasing terroir-driven quality prevails.

5/7/2021 3:44:00 PM - I bought a case of this on a retailer close-out in 2003, and a number of bottles were quite tight as you described. It was our first cayuse in recent memory. And possibly our first ever non-Syrah Cayuse. I drank this Friday with a filet roast, and though I was expecting a funky meatiness, it did not surface (we only gave had an hour before reaching the bottom of the decanter, so perhaps just not enough time for it to show its best. That said quite good varietal representation with blackberry fruit, chips of cedar, and a flake of graphite. With those three came a nice bouquet of violet. Exhibited well-integrated tannins with an excellent finish. 91 now, and will improve over the next few years.

Not decanted. Wow! My last bottle was in 2013 and this has improved even since that great showing. Beautifully sweet fruit (raspberry, cherry) is the focal point, with perfect balance. Zero heat, nice structure, but tannins are an afterthought at this point in its evolution. This is maturing slowly, but I think it's into its peak window and will stay there for, dare I say, 10 years or more. Absolutely delicious. THIS is why one ages Betz Bdx blends!
