Blind Tasting Friday session at ES (Extra Space): Tasted blind. Pop and poured and drank over 2 hours.
Appearance is medium intensity garnet colour. Lots of fine and coarse sediments. Legs.
Initial nose has a bit of barnyard ?brett, earth, and sour red cherry. Very much like an aged Brunello. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium acidity, high alcohol, mellow integrated medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavor intensity, with flavours of cheesy barnyard, earth, sour red cherries. Medium+ finish.
Sadly, it was downhill after the first glass. Cheesy barnyard became a bit more smelly socks, and the sour red cherries became more sour prunes and plums.
Probably very good quality during its heyday. Now it is tired and past its prime. Drink up now - pop and slurp it down fast. My points are for the 1st glass.

Jason's Birthday Wine Night 2015 (Dakota): Tasted blind. Aired in decanter for 1 hour before drinking.
I must first say that there is so much bottle variation between the 3 bottles of this I have had!
Appearance is clear, deep ruby colour with purplish tinges. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of vanilla, licorice, blackberry jam, and some black pepper spice. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol, fine high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, exploding out onto the palate with flavours of sweet licorice, vanilla, blueberries, blackberry jam, milk chocolate. Long finish.
Very good quality. Very obviously an Aussie full throttle Shiraz. Showing no restraint this time. Deserves a high rating surely, but not really a style I appreciate so much nowadays.

The Laird Wines Dinner (Imperial Treasure, Great World City): Very dark and opaque and darker than Elderton Command 1999. Lifted nose, very primary and fruits driven, showing aromas of dark fruits, plum, blackberry with a touch of smokiness. Double decant 3 hours and it evolved nicely on palate. Very opulent and good concentration, plenty of sweet fruits, blackbrerry, blueberry and plum. Very good, rounded mouthfeel with a long persistent aftertaste and velvety tannins. This is very enjoying and one step up of Command.

The last wine of the night and aptly so. Powerful intense wine. I first tasted this when it was first released in 2006/2007 at the cellar door in Mclaren vale itself as a poor student. I am so glad i revisited this wine again last night.

Decanted for 2-3 hrs before serving. Totally opaque black purple colour with a purple hue and excellent cling. The nose is brooding and alluring. Earthy notes combined with dark fruits like blackberry, plum with a tinge of vanilla oak and oriental spice. The palate is voluptous with mouth filling flavours of dark fruits which then leads to explosion of spicyness which is nice but not overpowering. Lovely, fined grained, textural tannins that seem to linger on forever on the tongue.

This is definitely a wine to bring to impress if the theme of the night is shiraz or full bodied wines.

At Davyd's place. Tasted blind. Apparently in good condition - clean cork and into-neck fill level.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, garnet colour.
Initial nose was of wet newspaper, and quite swampy mangrove-like. I was worried this was cork taint, but the unpleasant odours blew off. Aromas of dried leaves.
On the palate, medium acidity, very smooth fine tannins. Entry was sweet but sour towards the medium+ finish. No fruits left in this wine. Only tertiary notes of earthy compost and leaf litter.
I guessed early 1980s Left Bank Bordeaux.
This 1966 bottle must be one of the oldest Bordeaux wines I have ever tasted.
