First, the storage: Purchased on release at Zachy's in approximately 1976. Two years in an unairconditioned apartment that recent law school graduates live in while earning $16,500 a year. Then eight years in a rack in the basement with a very leaky door to the outside at your first house that you could afford only because your father loaned you the money for the down payment, then 27 years in a passive underground cellar of your second house until your wife insists that you have to build a real cellar in the basement because she is tired of having to move cases around on the floor just to find the wine that you want, then 10 years in a temperature-controlled cellar built by Chris Kravitz.

Fill: Low Shoulder.

Cork: The first cork I have had that did not come out cleanly with a Durand. The top 80% of the cork came out in a crumble and looked like that dark brown crumbled chocolate you sometimes get on a cake. Half the rest made it out of the bottle with careful use of the Durand worm and the rest did a swan dive with a twist into the wine.

Decant: The wine has been lying at a slight angle in the display row in the cellar for a decade without moving, label up. Brought upstairs, put in an angled wine carrier at the same angle, cork removed, decanted through a fine screen to catch the crumbled cork into a "decanter" I got at K-Mart for $4.50, and then poured immediately into the glasses of waiting guests in the back yard.

Color: OMG - other notes say it was light in color. Not this bottle. As I decanted it, I noticed a slight browning in the stream, but in the bottle it was dark Bordeaux colored with no sign of bricking. The color was indistinguishable from the other four red wines we served - all at least 35 years younger.

Palate: Excellent. No sign of significant deterioration or other bad things that happen when Bordeaux gets old and tired. I would never had guessed 50 years old. I would have been surprised at 1982 and more likely would have guessed 1989 or 1990. Extremely smooth. Although the tannin was probably 95% resolved, there was still just a bit. There was red fruit on the nose but it was subdued on the palate. When I consider that my collection, and hence what I like to drink, leans heavily towards SQN, Saxum, and the cabs of Thomas Rivers Brown, subdued is probably a compliment to most of you. I have had some great Bordeaux over the years. 1989 Haut Brion, 1989 and 1990 Montrose, 2000 Latour and 1928 Margaux (at age 41) come to mind, and this was excellent. If it had more fruit or a bit more power, I would probably have scored it about 95. If I factor in the age, the storage, and the fill, this would get a 97.

Original cost - no sure, but definitely less that $10.

Tasted alongside 2000 and 2001, not much difference at all among the three. Lighter color, translucent. Sweet cherry and strawberry aromas. Very soft, round, cherish flavors, very drinkable, only light tannin in all of them. At a blind tasting of 20 people, everyone guessed with California cab or pinot...not a single mention of Rhone or even French. There were also La Landonnes of the same three vintages, which were better and more concentrated but still not eye-popping. I was amazed at how light and relatively simple these were, given the reputation and price. A 2010 Cayuse Cailloux, supposedly made to emulate the "La-La" style, was also tasted and was far better.

Over two days. Fascinating to have tasted this a few days after the notably backward 2010 vintage.

This vintage, IMO, open-knit from the outset, has remained so. As pretty and alluring as all three previous tasting experiences. Nothing at all suggested reticence.

Seductive floral elements throughout. A red berry (raspberry, lingonberry, strawberry, and acerola) puree and potpourri bouquet and taste profile grace this wine quite uniquely. The textures, supple, velvety, and gritty interplay and change-inflection with striking precision. A wine of seeming contradictions, open yet firm, compact yet expansive, suave yet robust. In all cases, the wine reveals its more deeply substantive elements as it breathes.

The whole package on the second day. The floral and berry puree elements proved knee-weakening. Wholly spectacular! Moreover, while perceptible on the first day, a plush tannin wall asserted itself, adding evermore nuance and range. Indeed, the tannin here, combined with the wine's overall forwardness, marks this as the most unique Beaucastel that I have crossed paths with.

This packs the substance to continue its evolution for seven to ten years. As previously noted, this vintage will not likely lock down. This noted, my overall experience with this bottle demands a higher score, 96, instead of 95, and further improvement seems possible.

Enjoy over the near term after decanting for several hours, or hold. Recommend drinking by 2035. The acid profile might begin a rapid decline thereafter.

First of 6 from a recently purchased auction lot (just under $40@). I've had the VVs before, and liked them, but this was my first Chaupin. 1 oz taste, followed by 90 minute decant. On opening, medium to powerful notes on the nose of black raspberry and black cherry and a not atypical (but for me at least, unloved) CdP note of liquer-cough syrup. On the palate, consistent notes with lesser notes of blackberry, violets, earthy minerality, leather, garrigue and blood. There was a definite sense of heat, which worked itself out (along with the liquer-cough syrup notes) after 90 minutes. Very present tannins and acidity which blended in gradually but not completely until night 2. Almost opaque, full-bodied, thick legs. Very powerful persistence. By night 2, the wine tasted like sublime raspberry jam, which isn't quite to say it was jammy. Mostly consumed either as a standalone or with pork tenderloin cooked in a tomato and red wine reduction. There was enough acidity to work well with the latter, but Paul's point below is well-taken that this requires careful pairing, like most relatively high alcohol, voluptuous fruit, low to moderate acidity wines such as amarones, zins and cult cabs. 2011 vintage notwithstanding, this wine is drinking like it's at the beginning of its drinking window, with many years, and perhaps some improvement to come. At what I paid, winning qpr.

I couldn't help myself. 1) I should've waited another 2-3 years to open this 2) I should've decanted or saved for day two. I couldn't do either, because this is fascinating and delicious, even if it's not close to fully singing. PnP, with initial notes of black currant, raspberry, and spice, and a wall of tannins settling in mid-palate. After an hour or so of air time, it starts to open up further, revealing smoke, barnyard, tar, and mixed herbs. Seriously good, albeit tight, and by hour two the layers of flavors were coalescing nicely. There was a touch of heat throughout, which was my only complaint. I can only imagine how great the 2015 single vineyard bottles are, because this Gigondas is excellent.

I Don't Eat Brussel Sprouts

Actually, I do now, but it’s a refrain I have heard many times throughout my years; if not brussel sprouts then broccoli or asparagus, maybe spinach, or in my case and more recently, kale. Don’t tell me how good it is for me, I’ve lived this long devoid of it, I’m sure I can manage to do without it in the time left to me.

But it does bring up the recent quandary I had the other night as I was getting ready to prepare my dinner coming across a recipe for Baked Coriander Chicken Thighs that looked interesting. If you’re unfamiliar, coriander is the plant from which we get cilantro, a huge favorite of mine, but ground coriander is different, biting citrus notes that when I smell it, I’m not impressed. But what the heck.

Just as a kid when my mom tried to get me to eat my brussel sprouts, I had to force myself to continue with the recipe. I’m glad I did. When baked, the flavor turned milder and pleasant.

Earlier in the day, I had decided to venture out to the wine shop since I hadn’t been in a while. I wasn’t thinking about dinner or had even given any thought to it, but I did know that Germany had been having a string of great vintages, so a nice soft, round, with a hint of sweetness (much like myself – the sweetness part only) wine sounded good.

Coming in at a reasonable $15, the wine had aromas of citrus and hint of fruit. Apple and pear combined with that Mosel minerality seemed to move the wine along my palate with an almost creamy texture yet having bright acidity. At 11% alcohol, there was a sweetness that helps combine the other elements of the wine seamlessly.

The grapes for this wine coming from younger Grand Cru vines earmarked for their Prädikatswein, or higher classification, but these youthful vines even now produce excellent results. One unfortunate occurrence, I failed to get a picture of dinner, but the second night Holy Moly, I had Mole Chicken Thighs with Spanish Rice and . . . Asparagus with the wine! A little spice and a little sweetness, yum!

Cheers

Not much experience with Barbaresco. We are mostly new world wine drinkers -- cab, blends, pinots, zins, syrahs, etc. I find the Nebbiolo grape not to my tastes. We had this bottle open for two nights, and there wasn't much movement from day one to day two. Pours light to medium in the glass, with a nose of dusty red fruit, leather, and smoke.

On the palate, for me, it's acidity and tannin drowning out any fruit. It's chewy and makes my mouth pucker. It's obviously well made, but maybe it needs some years in the bottle? Or maybe it's just not my thing.

From Antinori's winery in Puglia a very enjoyable and substantial wine indeed!! Chocolaty nose with cedar and sweet spicy notes, leather and jammy black fruit which although ripe it still has vibrant freshness. Mouth is medium to full and in no way heavy or boring. Acidity is very good tannins sweet and flavorful. Finish is very satisfying with a cedar-vegetal finish complementing the nose aromas which is very reminiscent of Cabernet. The wine can keep for a few more years but I do not think there is any reason for waiting to open a bottle of 2006.

Fellow CT's Papies wrote that Negroamaro is the same as the Greek Xinomavro - I do not know if this is correct, yet Xinomavro and Negroamaro mean similar things in Greek and Italian respectively: "acid-black" and "bitter-black" - as far as the wines are concerned they are very different: whereas Xinomavro is medium bodied with a firm structure and lean fruit, Negroamaro seems to have supple tannins, sweet fruit and a fruity rather than savory aromatic profile.

Am trying to drink at least one bottle each of my 2010 Brunellos, given how great they show at this young age. Pnp at home with no decant which works best from my experience with the 2010. Surprised by the many mediocre tasting notes here, as this is another excellent 2010. Medium to dark ruby, initially a bit sinewy but the fruit clear nicely with only about 30 min of air in the open bottle. Red and dark fruit, herbs, earth and some leather and tobacco notes. The oak just like the tannins is already perfectly integrated, all is in great balance. Medium finish.
As said would not decant those 2010 at this point in time. The remaining half of the open bottle, kept about 5h in the fridge, is good but lacks the elegance and brightness the wine shows with just a little bit of air.

Had a dozen of these this week in two batches and one bottle had a wet protruding cork and was weeping slightly. No problems with fill Level in any of the bottles and the rest are fine. I phoned the merchant (Robersons in the UK) and they were excellent, crediting my account immediately and saying that they did not want the bottle returning.

So....... nothing to lose folks! Out came the corkscrew with the sink in close proximity in case I got that wet cardboard, wet dog, mouldy potatoes experience. What a lovely surprise! Loads of fruit, tons going on and half the bottle left in the decanter to see what develops after 24 hours.

There is no doubt that the bottle would not have kept with the cork in that condition but on the other hand, I was not expecting to enjoy a 19 year old Musar this evening. Let’s see what the other 11 bottles do over the next few years.
