NSG night at Duomo

Introduction

NSG themed nights are such a rarity - this is only the second time I've done NSG and I wonder why we don't do it more often? Tonight's line up were dominated by Vosne producers but frankly would have been interesting to see more representation from Chambolle producers - perhaps the next NSG theme can be a "Vosne vs Chambolle producers but NSG plots"?

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2008 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Blanc 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru

Really loved this one to the extent I had 3 pours before guessing haha. Bouquet showing white flowers, lemon oil and lemongrass. Palate incredibly fresh and energetic with yellow peaches and fresh apricot. But what hits the sweet spot is that zingy tension with a sharp mineral core and zapping acidity on the finish. 2008? What?!?

  • 2018 Giaconda Chardonnay Estate Vineyard 93 Points

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

Thought it was quite puligny then thought it was chablis. Zingy lemon curd, white flowers, saline on the bouquet, palate showing riper yellow fruit - pineapples, yellow peaches and plums. Great acidity and minerality - electrical! Burg killer definitely.

  • NV Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs Les Crayères 96 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    Disgorged 2011.

Tasted blind, whispers of Selosse echoed around the table. Slightly oxidative with cream, toast, wild berries and caramelized apples. Fantastic depth and complexity throughout on the bouquet and on the palate. Creamy on the palate with textural brillance. This is superb and showing really well!

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2017 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Procès 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Identifiably vosne-like. Stemmy goodness here along with orange peel, spices, high toned red fruits, strawberries and wild cherries come to mind, with upfront concentration and viscousity. Earthy undertones, touch of oak and mulberries underline the palate whilst delivering a silky yet intense mouthfeel. Only critic was that with air it got a bit ferrous and fruit became a bit burly - needs time for sure but a nice showing today.

  • 2014 Emmanuel Rouget Nuits St. Georges 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

Stylistically this was very vosne-like - bouquet showing vosne spice typicity, pepper, cinnamon with purity of red fruit. On the palate, this is silky with good fruit concentration, a slight touch of earthy minerality and aromatic florals (violets comes to mind). Lovely acidity and structure, this is drinking quite nicely already. Quite in line with vintage expectations where in 2014, palate tends to be a bit leaner and shying away even.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1988 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

From the cloudy appearance in glass, this was clear that it had significant age on this and most of us went early 90s. Bouquet was plummy, slightly medicinal with angelica root and honeysuckle flowers, dusty red fruit yet with concentration and purity. Palate ever so slightly sweet with black cherries, cigar smoke, cinnamon spice and bayberries. Great structure with layered complexity of fruits, earth and spices. Tannins nicely integrated now but surely gave me the impression that they would have been a brickwall years ago!

  • 1998 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Stark difference from the 1st flight in terms of age with a 20-30 year disparity. Bouquet threw off aromatic spices, manuka honey, orange peel, dried flowers and plums. Palate threw forth grilled mushrooms, ripe cherries, smoke with earthy undertones and minerality. Felt that the fruit was drying out here, tannins pretty grippy and seems like it is overtaking the fruit. We decided that because the wine was still pretty tight, we would give it a quick decant but I think all that did was to accentuate the tannic edge of the wine.

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 2006 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Bouquet showing fantastic concentration, fresh and ripe fruit with cherry undertones and plums. High tone fruits on the bouquet and the palate with good structure, complexity with pitch perfect elegance and balance - am impressed with how clean this was and didn't feel NSG at all, great showing and this sure is classy.

  • 1993 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

This was a refreshing change and noticeably different from other bottles - which led me to this was a more traditional and rustic NSG based producer. Alluring bouquet of plums, bayberries, dark berries with a kiss of oak spice. On the palate, this showed ridiculously youthful - rich yet clean and smooth with fantastic fruit concentration. Gorgeous showing with balance and silky tannins.

This was bought in 95 and laid to rest in bossman's cellar ever since. Franky, with this level of provenance, I would not be surprised if this lasted this way for another 5 to 10 years. The only thing even remotely 1993 about this was the higher acid profile to which I thought this was 07 or 08!
