Introduction

Great tasting by Utregs Wijnhuis (Sjors & Martijn) with a great group of people.

Flight 1 (16 Notes)

  • NV Thierry Houry Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Parcellaire "Baronette" 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

My first encounter with this producer and thus this cuvee. Lovely, youthful; brioche, dough, lovely citrus, ripe. Quite rich champagne. Medium+ acidity, medium+ finish

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Ay La Côte Faron 95 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

2005 base, 2010 degorgement. Almost copper in color, clearly oxidative with aroma’s of (wal)nuts, tangerine, honey, marmelade, sherry note, currant. Comparable on the palate but stunningly complete, complex and concentrated, followed by a beautiful long lasting and lingering finish.

Blanc de noir, solera started in 1995, ~1 ha vineyard, 15hl/ha

  • 2015 Maison Leroy Puligny-Montrachet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet

A “nose to die for” I wrote in my notes and this wine is for me (at this point in time) not about complexity, but about balance, concentration, quality of fruit etc. A great reductive note which became less pronounced with a bit more air, quintessential Cote de Beaune, with beautiful use of oak and great concentration on the palate. 93-94

  • 1994 Robert Ampeau & Fils Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Tasted next to Leroy Puligny Montrachet 2015 and this stood up firmly and even surpassed it for me. Such complexity and depth! Medium+ intensity; clearly oxidative, sherry, nuts (walnut, almond), marmelade, honey, ginger, some tropical fruits. On the palate the complexity was exquisite! Medium+ acidity, very long finish. A very intellectual wine. 94-95

50% new oak, 18 months sur lie

  • 2005 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

This was almost (too) youthful. Always such a treat to drink this. In the interview with Levi Dalton in IDTT episode 352, Jean-Louis explained that he liked the white better over the red Hermitage, but that it needs at least 20 years. So indeed maybe too young :-). Medium+ intensity with fig, pear, a bitter note, lactic, melon, white chocolate, marzipan. Medium acidity (just enough), very long finish. 95+

  • 1986 Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial Blanco 94 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

This wine was very high on my bucketlist and although absolutely great in every aspect, my expectations were even higher. After 21 (!!) years oak aging, 6 year more years in concrete foudre, one can imagine this has an oxidative character to it with marzipan, nutty, but also white peach, citrus, pear. Medium+ acidity, very concentrated on the palate with a very long finish. 94++

Strange to say after 252 months of aging, but I feel this will be even better in ~5 years from now

  • 2010 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Procès 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

This is of course insanely overpriced on the secondary market. Given its pedigree (a fine but nothing special NSG 1cru vineyard) a good wine, given its current price tag (around €400-500 I believe) it does not make sense. Still nice to drink, quite ripe with deep cherries, black currant, oak noticeable. Medium+ acidity, medium+ finish. Whole bunch, 50% new wood.

  • 2002 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Medium+ intensity with some barnyard, forest floor, red fruit, black currant, black cherry. Medium+ acidity, low tannins, medium+ finish. Soft and sensual on the palate.

50% new wood, vines from 1930

  • 2016 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Deep garnet, medium+ intensity with garrigue, plum, coffee, cherry, floral. Very ripe and very primary today. This will require patience to see it fully blossom, today it’s very good, but in my opinion not utterly brilliant (as both CT and critic scores’ suggest). Full-bodied, medium acidity, medium+ tannins, long finish. 93-94

  • 2008 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie Côte Brune 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

This needed a bit of air, but then it became truly brilliant! Aged Northern Rhone is one of my favorites, the combination of elegance, power and complexity. Medium+ intensity with bacon, smoke, earthy, minerality, black fruit, charcoal, some red fruit. Medium+ acidity, medium+ tannins and a long finish. There is a light green note on the palate, maybe because of the whole bunch? 95-96

24 months on 30% new oak

  • 2014 Penfolds Grange 94 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Interesting to see where the wine is at this stage; still very young. Smoke, eucalyptus, black currant, blackberry, oak, cocos. Full bodied, medium+ acidity, medium+ tannins, long finish. Big, bold, full of power, but very enjoyable. Will be better in ~5 years. 93-94

    100% new American oak

  • 2019 Denarius 90 Points

    France, Vin de France

A unique wine in a number of ways; 1) pre-phylloxera vines 2) apparently how Bordeaux wines used to be? 3) insane prices. Cough sirup, medicinal, black and red fruit. Not for me

  • 2014 Domaine des Tours Vaucluse 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vaucluse

Very light in color, cranberry, strawberry, red currant, oranges, a hint of barnyard. Medium+ acidity, medium finish.

Fun and interesting to drink, not something to stock up for me
