Introduction

At long last, we finally had G's friends over for a much talked about and anticipated tasting / culling. Great group of folks including Dave and Theresa, Tim and Marilyn, Doug and Chris, Mike and Nance, Laura, Dave, and Randy. While not the same kind of over-the-top event as some I've read about, we opened a lot of good to really good wines. For me, as well as many of the guests, it was a nice opportunity to taste a number of examples of several varietals. Too many wines, but a good tasting and learning experience. Also, too much food. Grilled tenderloin sandwiches, grilled lamb chops, chips with crab dip, guacamole and jicama slaw, bacon wrapped dates courtesy of Chris, and a multitude of desserts courtesy of Theresa.

Tasting notes are a bit limited, and largely from memory and/or second day impressions.

Flight 1 - Bubblies (4 Notes)

The surprise for me in this group was the '97 Roederer, which was quite the bargain and my favorite of the bunch.

Flight 2 - Still Whites (9 Notes)

It never happens this way at my house, but for the first time the fans of whites were privy to a fair number of pretty good bottles. A bit of a hodge-podge, the consensus favorite was the 2002 Beaucastel, the only bottle finished. The Weinbach was disappointing compared to earlier tastings. Likewise, I was hoping for more from both the Hansel and Alban. Everything else was quite good, transcending ordinary summer party fare.

Flight 3 - Pinots (7 Notes)

I originally started this as a Oregon pinot flight. But after opening 5 of those, I added a couple of California bottles to add some variety. In general, while the Oregon bottles drank nicely, they don't have the same sort of quaffer appeal as the California bottles. The exception is the Scott Paul, which was very nicely balanced and the favorite of several.

  • 2004 Benton-Lane Pinot Noir

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    (6/15/2008)

Of the pinot group, the lightest of the bunch. As such, didn't show well and wasn't particularly enjoyed by the tasters.

  • 2001 Hamacher Pinot Noir Oregon 89 Points

    USA, Oregon

    (6/15/2008)

Gamier, earthier than others on the table. As a result, wasn't among the group's favorites.

  • 2002 Van Duzer Pinot Noir Estate 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    (6/15/2008)

A very good, representative bottle for the tasting. Not as forward or overtly seductive as the Scott Paul.

  • 2003 Calera Pinot Noir Reed Vineyard 90 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Mount Harlan

    (6/15/2008)

I don't think this one is ready. Kind of seemed over the top and heavy, particularly as compared to the '05 Vision Cellars Gary's Vyd. A couple more years might be helpful with respect to smoothing this out.

  • 2004 J. K. Carriere Pinot Noir Provocateur 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    (6/15/2008)

I continue to be amazed at how this has developed since I first tasted it a year or two ago. It has developed into a very good and representative Oregon pinot, and quite a treat for a "second" bottling. In terms of the Oregon pinots served, this was behind the Scott Paul, but as good as any of the others.

  • 2003 Scott Paul Cellars Pinot Noir La Paulée 91 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    (6/15/2008)

Good balance between Oregon earthiness and full-bodied fruit. The consensus favorite of the Oregon pinots served, as well as mine.

  • 2005 Vision Cellars Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard 93 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

    (6/15/2008)

For my tastes, easily the best pinot opened. Well put-together, with forward fruit yet not overweight. Lighter than the Calera, but fuller and more forward than any of the Oregon pinots served. Reminds me of some of the better California pinots (Sea Smoke, Selyem, Rivers-Marie) I've had. I'd be very comfortable posting up this wine in any pinot tasting.

Flight 4 - Syrah / Shiraz (6 Notes)

All good, but the Stolpman was the hands down winner for current drinking, the Lafage probably the best QPR on the cheap side.

  • 2005 Domaine Lafage Côté Sud 89 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes Catalanes

    (6/15/2008)

One of two great QPRs from the syrah flight, the other being the Stolpman at $23. This doesn't have the same level of complexity, at least not yet. But it does have great depth of fruit and nice length on the finish. Should improve with a couple of years more time in the bottle.

  • 2005 Seven Hills Winery Syrah Walla Walla Valley 89 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

    (6/15/2008)

I liked this one more than the score might indicate. Medium bodied, with a few rough edges that will probably smooth out over time. If it hadn't been in the company of some of the others (04 Stolpman), my neophyte palate may have led to a higher scoring of this.

  • 2003 Vignalta Syrah Monte Rey 90 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Monterey

    (6/15/2008)

This wine walks the line between a sweet corn, comfort food impression on good bottles, to tomato stew on less good bottles. This was one of the good ones, but does not share much commonality of flavors with other syrahs opened for the tasting.

  • 2003 Long Shadows Wineries Syrah Sequel 90 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

    (6/15/2008)

Too early for this one, as it remains quite primary. Continues to need more time to evolve. Nice wine, but not as refined or ready as the 2004 Stolpman.

  • 2003 Thorn-Clarke Shiraz Shotfire (Ridge) 91 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

    (6/15/2008)

Drinking really well at present. One of the better syrah/shiraz opened. Seems weightier than it has in the past. Unfortunately, only one btl left

  • 2004 Stolpman Syrah Estate Santa Ynez Valley 93 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley

    (6/15/2008)

The best syrah of the evening. Very well balanced and smooth. Interesting that while this is a younger btl, it is much more ready to drink than the 03 Sequel.

Flight 5 - Cab / Cab Blends (6 Notes)

No real rockstars here. Both the Atalon and Mondavi were outstanding wines. The others were good but relatively ordinary.

Closing

A nice evening all the way around, good company and great weather....for the most part. Weathered a minor storm of 50mph winds accompanied by wines and tobacco products on the front porch. We successfully managed to send a lot of leftover wine home with our guests, leaving fewer bottles in the recycle bin for our neighbors to whisper about!
