Introduction

KC picked up a couple of lovely lamb racks from riverlands and mori - both organic and pretty marvellous. The riverlands made firm friends with the Malescasse but the mori proved more problematic...the Louis Latour was probably the best but not perfect...

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 1982 Château Durfort-Vivens

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Decanted for about 40 minutes after cork split (user error).
Aromas of earth, leather, savoury dusty spcie, a little Asian five spice over blackcurrant, wet cedar, cigar box, roasted meat. In the mouth it has medium plus intensity acidity, subdued flavours show black over red currant, tannins pretty much resolved which leaves this smoothly engaging, fresh with a little non-intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish. Almost Burgundian in it's restraint and elegance. Yum.

  • 1996 Château Beaumont

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

From Coravin and after 45 minutes covered in the glass. Aromas of bramble, blackberry, plums, sweet spice, slight blackcurrant, leather, a little mushroom and slight aniseed and pepper. With time a smidge of nail varnish remover and slight damp cellar. Medium plus intensity acidity, shows a little volatile sharpness, plenty of peppery spice on the palate, the fruit plays 2nd fiddle, the tannins are grippy, drying, slightly grainy persistent and pleasing. Nice

  • 1989 Château Cissac

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

From Coravin. Aromas of farmyard, earth, sweet spice, leather, blackcurrant under brambles and slight plums and a little forest floor. Juicy, a little aniseed joins the brambly fruit, savoury liquorice, tannins are tight and grainy but supportive rather than dominant. Nice.

  • 1993 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton-Bressandes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

From Coravin. Savoury, spiced, woody, earthy, a little pine mushroom, black fruits and a touch of smokiness. Juicy, fleshy, savoury with a black fruit core, black tea, tannins are a emery paper burr on the palate, tertiary notes abound, earth, leather, forest floor but all very much in the supporting role. Lovely.

  • 2002 Louis Latour Corton-Clos de la Vigne au Saint

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

From Coravin. Aromas of plums, caramel and vanilla oak, sweet spice, a little toast, more dark hued fruit than last tasting, a little savoury spice here as well. Fleshy rather than juicy, alcohol warmth, similar flavours, slight aniseed, tannic grip is softly textured but very present. Tastes younger than its years.

Closing

The Lamb was glorious and the wine came to the party for the most part. More experimentation required I think
